I'm making a small diorama of the recovery of the Mercury MA-3 capsule.  This will include a couple of figures in US military (non-combat) uniform. see highlighted figure on attached photo

Three questions

- What branch of the US military is he?

- What is this type or uniform called?

- Where can I get some 1/72 figures in this uniform?

He's Army!  HOorah.  Black and gold "U.S. Army" over the left pocket and white "name tape" over the right.  No rank visible so probably an officer.

Those are plain old fatigues.  For 1/72 figures, your best bet is to scour whatever CMK has.  These fatigues were phased out by '65 in Vietnam, so you'd need to find the appropriate stiff hat and sand off the extra pockets from the untucked jungle fatigue blouse + giving him a belt.  I suggest using modified German WWII figure hats.

Thanks.  What is CMK?

Same as Special Hobby, just under a different label, specializing in resin figures.  They have a bunch, but you'll need to check yourself.

I'm wondering if that's some kind of an amphibious vehicle it's suspended from? I realise now how small that Mercury capsule actually was: one giant leap for man, one tiny can of spam ....

The uniform he is wearing is know as OG 107 fatigues..

I have a set for my re-enactment group i am in, as we cover US Army during the Vietnam War, which fits in with your time frame.

Hope this helps
