IanJohnB Posted April 22, 2024 Posted April 22, 2024 Made a start on this. The two halves of the hull were well warped. Managed to eventually get them stuck together but required filler to fill a gap in the middle 🙂 6
ArnoldAmbrose Posted April 22, 2024 Posted April 22, 2024 G'day @IanJohnB, good luck with this. Are you going OOB which I think depicts the ship at about 1932 or altering the model? I think it's a good kit either way, am interested in what you do with it and will be following this. Regards, Jeff. 1

Regards, Jeff. I am just going with the instructions and colour scheme in the box, plus copying a bit from what others have done. Not really skilful enough to customise stuff yet - still see myself as a modelling novice
Andy H Posted April 22, 2024 Posted April 22, 2024 Ahoy there! I'll be showing more than a little interest. 👍 1
TallBlondJohn Posted April 22, 2024 Posted April 22, 2024 Enjoy it, that's what counts. We now know the hull wasn't red! 2
bissyboat Posted April 22, 2024 Posted April 22, 2024 Nice Airfix classic, but a pig of a kit. No doubt that you will transform this relic into a silk purse. ⚓👍 1

G'day Ian, we're all novices at the beginning, doing mods and additions I think is something that comes to us over time. As TBJ says - "Enjoy it, that's what counts." As for the colour scheme, there's been considerable discussion over it. My original build was OOB, including the colours. My second was a modification to her May 1941 appearance, as much as I could, and that included a different colour scheme. For that I based it on a diagram generously supplied by @Jamie @ Sovereign Hobbies which is endorsed by the HMS Hood Association I think. It has a dark grey anti-fouling below the waterline. If she ever had red I can't recall, and if she did I don't know when the grey was added. But even so I think it looks OK - ultimately it's your model, your choice. 🙂 I can post a photo of them both if you wish, for comparison. But I don't want to bamboozle you too much either. HTH and doesn't confuse. Regards, Jeff. 2

Regards, Jeff. Hi Jeff, she never had red. She used Peacock & Buchan's products her entire career, who only ever supplied anti-fouling in black or grey shades. Of the years where the colour is positively documented, it was grey. 3 1
bissyboat Posted April 23, 2024 Posted April 23, 2024 That´s all true, but facts aside. I personally prefer the lower hull to be red. ⚓🤔 1

I think there's a period of adjustment for many people though, as they expect to see red and anything else doesn't feel right until they get used to the idea. The number of grey ships increases though Geun Sup Yoon's HMS Formidable, for example, looks really attractive with grey anti-fouling I think http://www.modelshipgallery.com/gallery/cv/hms/Formidable-700-gy/images/fmd02.jpg 3
