Romanian Air Force - 1/48 MiG-21 LanceR & F-16AM, with a little twist.

Recommended Posts

Hi. :D

I've now also started the Romanian F-16 build.
I'm using the new Kinetic Gold standard kit from 2022 for this build.

I've not built this kit before so I'll try and keep notes of what I like with it and what could have been better.

First not so good thing is two large ejection pin marks on the fulel tank pylons.

I've also glued the BRU9 units together.
They needed some sanding before I glued them together, and when the glue had set I also has some seams to go over.

The same could be said for the weapon pylons.

One improvement from the old kit is the drop tanks.
No more nasty seams to go over with sanding sticks and putty.
I think they'll look fine with just some light sanding of the seams.

As for the ordnance the kit only comes with 2 GBU-12's.
It includes bomb bodies for 2 GBU-12 and 2 GBU-49, but only one set of tail units.
So for my chosen load out with 4 GBU-12's I'll have to rob another kit for a second pair.
Another thing I really don't like is that the Sidewinders are done in many separate parts, for instance the AIM-9X body parts are done in three separate parts that have to be glued together.
I'm not using them, I have plenty of 9X's leftover from the older kits that I'll be using instead.

Just asking, can a MLU F-16AM carry 4 guided bombs?

Not sure I have seen that before... 🤔

Please correct me!

Hi. :D

My plan was to spend a long weekend at the cottage, but we decided to stay home instead, so I got four full days at the bench. :D

We can continue with thing I don't like about the new boxing.
Why do you have to put 12 ejection pins on the inside of the air intake. :wall:
They are a bit more subtle than in the old box, but they're still irritating.

So sand, and putty and left to dry over night.
53714314796_0e43172b2a_k.jpg046 by Bosse Persson, on Flickr

And sand and polish the following day.

I've glued the front and back parts together of the upper fuselage.
53714315021_2d61cd4783_k.jpg048 by Bosse Persson, on Flickr

And I had time to gulf down a pizza. :eat: :tasty:

The drop tanks has been glued to their pylons.
I used a small thin strip of plasticard to get rid of a step at the end of the pylons.

The nice cockpit details has been sanded flush, I'll put some Quinta 3D decals in the cockpit later on.

And I've run out of Alligator clips sticks.
Good thing that I ordered a 100 pack of them, so out with the "flower sticks" and start cutting some 10cm lengths. :D

And that was three days of building more or less constantly in a few pictures.
Yesterday Sunday I cleaned my airbrush fully and I got rid of the bubbling in the paint cup.
I also changed the Teflon seal i the nozzle, changed both the nozzle and needle for new ones, and now it works again.
Just have to remember to order some more spare parts from Steel Models in Italy.
I don't want to sit at home without them when I need them next time.
I did of course test the airbrush with some primer on all parts for the LanceR and the F-16.

Hi. :D

Another weekend has passed.
And I spent it at the bench, watching the World Championship in Ice hockey and build on my aircrafts.

I've managed to spray some paint on some subassemblies, and I've even clear coated some of them.

And I've put some bling in the cockpit on the F-16

I really like how Quinta's 3D decals gives life to a cockpit.
I'll add the harness to the ejection seat later on during the week.

No 3D decal for the LanceR, here it's resin and old school detail painting.
I had to start with drilling out the holes for the instrument in the IP.
53732204751_cb5b0d7011_k.jpg060 by Bosse Persson, on Flickr

And then it was out with my micro brushes and start to paint various pipe, instrument, breaker etc.
53732532579_1f7b9367a6_k.jpg061 by Bosse Persson, on Flickr

And that was what I could manage during this weekend.

Hi. :D

Some more has happened on my Romanian aircrafts.
But first some non modelling thing.
It's just not us who are celebrating Nato 75 years.

A Swedish firm, Mynthuset, dealing in coins and medals are also joining in the celebrations.
53756964639_b66c94431f_k.jpg062 by Bosse Persson, on Flickr

And yesterday I took delivery of my first of 8 medals.

I've started to glue some sub assemblies together.
Main landing gear bay on the MiG is in place.
53756839173_2ef25b4afb_k.jpg066 by Bosse Persson, on Flickr

Some bracing bars in the fuselage as well.

And I've finished the LanceR IP.
Unfortnuately I broke it, but I think I glued it enough to sit right in the cockpit.

All cockpit parts has been matt coated.
53757055740_ca94c12200_k.jpg069 by Bosse Persson, on Flickr

I've also glued the air intake to the F-16 fuselage.
53756964539_97950d113b_k.jpg070 by Bosse Persson, on Flickr

And I think I've found the best white colour.
Mr Hobby #1, a real crispy white in my opinion.
53756640451_3ff258dd44_k.jpg072 by Bosse Persson, on Flickr

But it smells a lot more than AK Real Color and Mr Paint, so I had to get me a respirator to be able to work with it.
53757055505_7be6f7e91e_k.jpg071 by Bosse Persson, on Flickr

But it did the trick, a lovely white shade.

I've also completed the F-16 cockpit.
53756965339_1b87e3c303_k.jpg074 by Bosse Persson, on Flickr

And it's now glued in place.

If I can find the time I guess I'll have both kits glued together by next weekend.

Hi. :D

I had some time over yesterday evening and started to get the cockpit for the LanceR
There was some rather thick resin plugs that had to be sawn through, so it took some time.
53732532579_1f7b9367a6_k.jpg061 by Bosse Persson, on Flickr

But I eventually got the free and could sand them into shape so they'll fit inside the fuselage.
url=https://flic.kr/p/2pUwvax]53759307469_693686d178_k.jpg[/url]077 by Bosse Persson, on Flickr

I can see that I cut the plastic floor panel a bit short.
But that will not be seen once the cockpit is done, and I'll put some plasticard reinforcement strips on the underside.
53759307459_e0c77e0ffc_k.jpg078 by Bosse Persson, on Flickr

The resin manufacturer suggest that you completely build up the cockpit before gluing it in the plane.
I'm not doing that since I want the side panels to fit snuggly up against the fuselage on both sides so I'm gluing them in this way.

This weekend we'll be going to the cottage for some work in the garden and some BBQ. :tasty: :eat:
So we'll have to wait until next week to see how this went.

@Marlin It seems you've got your table full of builds 😃 Nice work on the cockpits! Looking forwards to the BBQ 😉

Thanks Reini. :D

Yes my work table(s) are getting rather cluttered.

And with the two F-16's I've pledge to build in the South of the Rio Grand GB things will get worse.

Must organise it somewhat better I think.

Hi. :D

Not much has happened with my builds since the last update.
But at a glacial pace I've managed to glue the fuselage together on the Romanian F-16

I do hope I'll manage more this coming week.
