Hello & Welcome all … I will be starting my 2nd ship in 31 years. I have chosen the 1:700 Trumpeter HMS Hood as she floated in 1931.

I have a couple of good detailed builds to follow so as to make the corrections necessary for the kit to be more accurate. I will have questions so if anyone has HMS Hood info in this time period please help. Mostly some of the decks and masts. Though also where certain equipment is located on the deck. Here are the obligatory photo’s. I know the color guide isn't 100% accurate but it gives me a rough idea.

I will be building this as a waterline build to match my 1:700 ORP Kujawiak from 1942. I did complete the lower hull/deck construction today as well.

I did mix up color’s to get as close to Colorcoats paint chips for Hood’s colors. I know it’s not perfect but the best I can do on this side of the pond.

Did not expect you to go with this subject Dennis but it's a good one and you're off to a great start :speak_cool:

Thanks Col. I knew I wanted something besides an aircraft. Though I did strongly consider an Hawker Fury and an F9C sparrow-hawk from Curtiss. I feel it was a better choice to go with a floaty thing.

One of my front running potential projects is a Hawker Fury Dennis, so the subject may be covered at least once, although I'll be surprised if it doesn't feature a few times

Hello and good morning … I haven't rested but slowly pecking away at this. I now have the first level of the superstructure started.

With the closer photo’s you may see a slight bit of streaking. I used a slightly darker tone to try and get variation in the decks, I then varnished them. Port ⬆️ and Starboard. ⬇️

I will admit I may have goofed somewhere though. The area ↗️ here in the last photo is not the greatest of fits. There are some gaps between the vertical walls and the upper deck. Please feel free to ask any questions or post comments.

Excellent choice Dennis nice to see you tackle a maritime subject too,the Hood is a very emotive subject for us here in Britain much as the Nevada is for Americans such a shock to

the nation loosing such an iconic ship and the huge loss of life affected so many towns and villages across the country even the small village I live in now lost a couple of men onboard

her.

Yes I purposefully chose to do Hood. It is such an important historical moment for both the R.N. and the U.K. I could have chosen an American ship but I think The R.N. being the pre-eminent Naval power of the era it was the better choice.

  • 2 weeks later...

Morning everyone … Slowly but surely I plod along on this. Im kind of building out of sequence. The foremast and bridge areas should be followed by the stacks and mainmast. Then the turrets should fall into place. I opted to do the upper forward turret to see what it would look like. Its removable so no worries there. It also needs some touch ups. The parts of the main mast don't line up very well. But Im trying to get it as good as I can.

I know this looks really bad ⬇️ however it’s not that far out of alignment in real life. I think it’s the way I took the picture ?

You can really sense how massive this ship was Dennis.  Looking good!

Yes I thought about the 1:700 etch sailors you can purchase but I just don't have the patience to work with them. I think a good indicator would be the spotlights. They're about 2.5 mm’s high so if a man was next to them He’d be about 2 mm’s high. That should give you a rough idea as to the size of the ship.

The blue square surrounds a hatch, approximately 2mm’s tall this should give you an idea of size.

Looking good Cliff, only just started catching up with this GB as I'm currently finishing a McLaren MP4/4 for another sites Senna group build.

Hopefully I'll get started in this one in the next week or so :)

I'm currently reading  "The End of Glory: War & Peace in HMS Hood 1916-1941" by Bruce Taylor. No pics unfortunately, but it was a huge peacetime flagship for the RN and it was a huge loss to the British people when it was sunk with the loss of all off her 1,418 crew except for 3 survivors, a tragic waste of young life ☹️

I've never built a ship apart from the RAF rescue launch 50 odd years ago, might have to try one soon 🤔

Think I'd have to go 1/350 scale though to give my eyes and sausage fingers a fighting chance :)

Thanks Ian… it’s Dennis btw. Id love to do 1:350 for much the same reason but way out of my fixed income & budget. I agree about the sad loss of life and there are arguments it could have possibly been prevented. But sadly this is the truth of war that young men die, usually for little or no real good reason. In this case at least they were attempting to end a maniacal madman’s grasp at world domination.

Sorry Dennis of course it is, I knew that but as I was reading through from the beginning I saw CliffB's reply and had a senior moment (or brain fart) and you became Cliff 🤣

Sometimes you see kits at reasonable prices at shows etc, so one day maybe :)

Ian :)
