rob Lyttle Posted February 28, 2024 Posted February 28, 2024 Doing research on the F101 C Recon Voodoo type and came across this on YouTube. Ancient bit of newsreel that has been kicked around the block a few times by the sound of it. Wailing Muzak throughout I'm afraid and a very typical voice-over narrative. But the Operation Sun Run was a speed and capability trial by the USAf, flying from L A to New York, and also the return flight to L A for 2 of the planes. A lot of refuelling was required and it was a great workout for the new KC135 tanker fleet with the F101s. It appears that the Voodoos carried individual colour schemes, one with yellow bands for example. But check out the plane in that "cover" image shown. The film has seen better days of course, and colour film and photography was "still in development " shall we say 😀 But that is full-blown magenta, don't you think?? So, could it be old film playing tricks, or could it be a reasonably accurate depiction of the paint job? I know Kitty Hawk supplies the yellow version with their 101C and it looks pretty good. But THIS one would look fantastic 😍 Is there any further reference for the Sun Run Voodoos and in particular, this one? 1

Robert Burkhart, the second wave spare, hit the first tanker and since #4 and #5 were on their way with no problems he took on only enough fuel to return to March AFB. The profiles show a good but "ordinary" red and the magenta appearance must be a distortion due to the newsreel film being old and degraded. The overall appearance of the film seems to be blue-shifted so to speak, and that would tend to turn red towards the magenta colour. Well, it was a pretty good workout for the USAF with their latest 101C and Boeing jet tankers
bentwaters81tfw Posted February 28, 2024 Posted February 28, 2024 There was a Sun Run Voodoo preserved at Clovis a.k.a. Cannon AFB in NM until a few years back. When the gate guard airframes were updated, it disappeared. I have tried to locate it without success. It was the machine used for testing with J79 engines. 1
rholland Posted February 29, 2024 Posted February 29, 2024 FWIW, in their 1/72 Sun Run kit 72131 Valom have the colour of the stripes on 60165 as bright red FS11136. Richard in NZ 1

f111guru Posted February 29, 2024 Posted February 29, 2024 @rob LyttleThis was F-101A Firewall before the Special Ops wing took over. This was the shape it was put in when removed from the gate guard position. As with most others do not know where it went to. I would think the Museum of The Air Force but have not confirmed or denied those thoughts either. All The Best, Ron VanDerwarker 2
busnproplinerfan Posted February 29, 2024 Posted February 29, 2024 No chance of that going back together. Have to wonder who wakes up in the morning and decides to do this. Can't be many A models around.

Looks like this little newsreel has wandered off towards the blue end of the spectrum. But magenta on bare metal would be a great looking Voodoo
bentwaters81tfw Posted February 29, 2024 Posted February 29, 2024 That is criminal, we would love a Voodoo, but the cost of transport from the USA is prohibitive.

You are too kind, Mike, but my build was a similar machine but not a Sun Run participant. You are correct that I did research the Sun Run and I might have something somewhere. I will look back at my file.
