BS 217 Sea Green

I'm an armour modeller but need help with what I believe is an aircraft colour.  Can anyone advise me on a manufacture of BS 217 Sea Green, a good  substitute or provide a mix ratio for this colour.

I'm not aware of one - it's not a common aircraft colour (if it'; an aircraft colour at all - BS381C has a range of colours used for 'official' purposes.) What's the armour use? It might be known by it's name or another name

using it as part of the unusual cam on a Taiwanese CM-34 Clouded Leopard, it is the light green below.

According to the old IPMS colour cross reference guide FS34227 is close. Humbrol 120 claims to be the same.

Having found my FS595 I'd say it's not yellow enough to match your photo which is almost a lime green - Humbrol 38???

Should try posting in the modern armour section, we may even have some members from the country of Taiwan that may help.  

 

Scalemates does not list any paints with that BSC code and Sea Green results are mostly dark examples.

It is car touch up paint but you should be able to thin it and use it on a model.

it's not specifically an aircraft colour, but part of the BSC381C range of colours.   

 

BS 381 C is NOT the WW2 standard, and it's not  colour I have ever run across in the context of WW2 paint schemes.

 

Question - why is Taiwan using a British Standard colour?   Answer is likely someone has said this is similar  in colour when asked.  Similar is the crucial bit, epaint only shows up four similar colours.

 

This kind of question comes up a lot, and the use of other colour standards for 'matches' is useful as long as you know the limitations, and who has provided the 'match'

 

So, where/how did the idea that this is "BS 217 Sea Green" arise from, and what are the other colours shown?

 

I would suspect in Taiwan an FS595 color, the US government color range, is more likely,   but it may just be a local color.  If it's local then you may as well eyeball a mix from the photo.

 

As has been suggested, this should be in modern armour, not WW2 aircraft,  as the real question is does anyone know what paint this is, or what paint standard does Taiwan use? 

The latter is much more of a rabbit hole,  and this may even be classified information given tensions between China and Taiwan.

 

Apologies if sounds like a lecture, just I have read and participated in many paint discussions on here and issues that arise.

 

And, as always @Casey  would be a good person to ask.

Thanks for all the great information.   AFV Club list the paint as Russian Green(1) but what is this colour? It turns out to be a very sickly pale green.

This isn't an Federal Standard colour but the closet I could get to was 34524 but it is to light and not green enough.

The reason I have placed it on the aircraft forum listed as Sea Green is that I have been looking into this colour for well over 12 months and the closet match I got was BSC381C 216 Eau de Nil however this was to light and somehow I bumped into some discussion on cockpit colours for Spitfires which seem to be either Apple Green or Sea Green, the later look like a better match for my colour and as I'm not and aircraft guy I thought I would asks the Boffins here, as I am somewhat stumped.

Putting your photo into Photoshop the colur comes out as roughly #7da766 in RGB terms or 125,167,102

 

There are, or were last time I looked, various model paint matching websites that may be able to take these figures and return a suitable model paint match.

 

I've scanned my bookmarks and found https://www.paint4models.com/Paint Conversion Chart 2010-2021.pdf and FS34258 is the closest I can see which is available in Testors as FS34258, Lifecolour Mimetic Green 1 or Pollyscale WarPac grey green. I'd probably add a touch of pure green to lift it a bit.

Russian Green is what the early model producers called the colour for Russian tanks, before we knew anything better.  I don't think that it was anything more than an expression of ignorance.

 

I don't know which aircraft sites you've been visiting, but early Spitfire cockpits were indeed in apple green (whatever colour that might mean - it seems to have been a light green of some kind, but the actual colour is unidentified).  Later ones were a standard colour called Grey Green.  I've not seen any Sea Green mentioned before.

NATO camo colours are likely to be in RAL, German colour standard.

I'd be looking at RAL 6018 Yellow green  or RAL 6039 Fibrous green as possibles?

EDIT - pulled out K-7 deck, does not have 6039.   The nearest to the photo is 6021, but I'd also be tempted to try adding white to the NATO 6031 and see what that look like

I have a RAK K-7 deck but it'd dark here, so only artificial light so what you can see on the screen is not very representative.  If the other colours are standard NATO, RAL 6031 Green, RAL 8027 Brown and RAL 9021 Black (via google)  then it maybe possible to get some kind of answer as you have those as colour references, @Casey or is that twaddle?

No Idea, the further you get from WW2 the less I know.....    I assume that the RAL colours I mention are their FS 595 'equivalents'  of these?

I just googled NATO RAL and got the above.  They look like the 3 colours used on a Leopard, which I assume use RAL and not FS 595,  something I got cheap years ago as practice armour kit, which is the only reason I had a vague idea about the colours in the pic.

Except for the main gun which is made by Northrop Grumman, the vehicle was designed and manufactured  in Taiwan.   A model kit of the subject that is also made in Taiwan, does not have a direct hobby paint match but suggest a 2 to 1 mix of C64 and C39 from GSI  Creos Mr Color brand.

 

The sample profile artwork is washed out as found at HobbySearch but have seen a video review on youtube and it looks more closely like the photo at the beginning of this thread.

Thanks again to all, I think I may have found something it is modo NEO Military Arms Color Lacquer Paint M-522 Emerald Green, made in Taiwan and it seems to come close to what I am after.

That NEO paint shade was suggested here almost two years ago  . . .

 

Note too in that older thread a set of colour instructions from AFV Club brand were also posted, and in that example the Russian Green from Creos is advised to match the required light green.  There is something odd why the paint jar does not match the painted spoons
