Powered by Rolls-Royce, 37 everyone can have a Roller in 2025

The title says it all really, but I'm supposed to write something in here...

Following chat over in Baby Boomers, I've learnt that a while ago @CliffB proposed a Rolls Royce powered GB, but there was very little interest. Well, I'm here to try and turn that motor over again.

It's that simple really, anything that had a power-plant by Rolls Royce is in, so it can be cars, shipping, a hanger full of civil aviation, some military type come to mind (I think the early Spitfires had Merlins in them, maybe someone can confirm).

One offs, eperimentals, proposals all welcome, I guess a wattiff at a push.

For figure modellers, the gents themselves and at a stretch, Rose Royce (as long as you do the flares accurately).

The most obscure thing I can come up with is that pre-electrification, Bedford to London commuters rode in a Rolls Royce diesel everyday (the lucky peeps)

So, any takers?

Clarification of criteria

Following some discussion (bottom of p1 into p2 of this thread), the Great Mind of BM is going for a very broad approach to what is Rolls Royce powered. Trusting the maturity of  the BM Massif (and they rarely let me down), if you think it's a Roller it is a Roller! So can be licensed Packard, unlicensed clones, can be original RR, nationalised RR, privatised RR

The idea is for a diverse and eclectic GB, the 'Bring em All Roller GB'

Of course I'll say yes   (but shouldn't this be in the Bunfight Proposals 2025 section?)

Cheers

I presume nothing, maybe you'd moved onto GE or P&W?

Seriously thought, I admit to not understanding the new system for GB proposals- but I thought they started off in here until they got the auxiliary power running because once you went across into the 2025 section you were committed to full power runs, and only got one chance?

Count me in. From the current stash I can do Viper, Merlin, Olympus, Spey, Derwent, Pegasus, Conway, Avon, RB199, EJ200, RB145, Dart, Tay, Nene, RB211, Kestrel and Gnome. So one or two options.

I'm uncertain too.  @Enzo the Magnificent could you clarify please - should proposals for GBs sit here in Chat or be in Bunfight Proposals?

Thanks 👍

That's a solo GB on it's own - how many votes is that worth if this gets to the bunfight?

@Mjwomack is correct.  A GB proposal should start off in chat. This is where it gets run up the flagpole to see if anyone salutes.  Once we have co-hosts and enough people saluting to give it a bit of traction, then we can move it to the Proposals section.  That's when the lobbying really starts.

Maybe Rose polishing a Rolls engined car at the Car Wash...

Says he, knowing full well that Rose Royce is a band, not a person.  :)  The singer was Gwen Dickey.  :smartass:

Impressive knowledge, I'd have you in my pub quiz team! And look forward to the model you describe

I've got cars, aircraft, tanks and I think a boat with RR engines, so I'm in.

Tanks- of course! I'd forgotten that AFVs are a great way for us paupers to test drive marquee engine- Rolls Royce v Porsche!

Quoting a modelling friend from Scotland, I'll be in with something "boringly predictable". Only in my case, that'd really be boring and predictable . V-P

N1340N would be right up your street...

I'm certain that I could find something, if this goes into proposals, and is successful at Bunfight.

Unvouched subjects include:

Italeri  AMX (RR Spey),

Airfix Hawk (RR Adour)

3 Airfix Harriers (RR Pegasus)

Spitfire (RR Merlin)

Even a scumbag like me had been behind the wheel of a RR engined thing, Humber Pig in this case 😁

Hmm. Even picking things powered by just one engine type, for example the 'R', could keep you building for many moons. Doubly so in this case, as many of the things that they powered aren't available as kits, ensuring that a lot of scratchbuilding would be required.

Not by me, mind you. I have difficulties finishing a Matchbox kit OOB in a GB time frame, so a scratchbuilt anything ain't gonna happen.

But there are Matchbox kits of RR powered beasts, so I'm taking that as an expression of interest - Thanks

I assume you'll only accept proper Rolls Royce Merlins, and not the license built Packards? That'll be fine, I'm just checking to be sure - Special Hobby just announced a new run of their Merlin Warhawks, but there'll be other GB:s for that one 😉.  V-P

Question here, what qualifies as Rolls-Royce?

Is it only things designed under the RR brand (would exclude the above), or only those produced under RR (would exclude, for example, the Pegasus radial but not the V/TOL), or anything with a history that is now under the RR banner? I expect the latter would probably encompass the vast majority of UK aviation.

You can tell by the layer of dust how long my rather battered olde Airfix Rolls has been on't top shelf...

Don't suppose Airfix still do this one as a "retro", or indeed any of the other cars.

I don 't know!!!!

I think this is the advantage of the new 'two-stage' approach to GB proposals, this sort of thing can be tossed around by the mighty BM mind, before going. onto the next stage.

In my simple way, I probable veer towards RR Banner, (though not necessarily ',.. history of'. Trying to flesh that out a bit,

Alas no to Packards, because they're Packards.

If it's commonly referred to as R/R, so R/R Merlin or R/R Olympus, it's allowed. Or A R/R Phantom to go towards cars,

What do peeps think to the idea ofd pre-1971- borrowing in part from the thinking of the Baby Boomers Gb, but also to fit in with the date of receivership and a what I'd see as a significant change (liquidation)

Or 1987 (re-privatisation if that's a word).

Thoughts welcome
