Early Me.262 were painted in the three greys, later ones in the green/brown.  As an early one you should be fine.

thanks Graham 👍

as I said nearly all I've seen have been green/brown but I do prefer grey/green but its good to have confirmation

Not grey/green. The description Graugrun for 74 is not official and misleading.  The colour is a dark grey.  I recall Ken Merrick posting to the effect that if you had something freshly painted, and peered very closely, you might make out a green tinge, but it disappeared rapidly.  There are quite a large number of colour photos showing just greys on the upper surfaces.

Modellers were mislead for some years by the Squadron In Action volumes on the FW190 and Bf109 showing quite strong greens for 74.  However, had the Luftwaffe operated their standard fighters in much the same camouflage as their RAF opponents, I'm sure someone would have noticed.

Both the engine cover panel and resin engine pieces were masked in preparation for the “black basing marble layer”…

I’ll be using MrColor C117 RLM76 light blue for the underside colour however, I first made a marble layer using various MRP paints, MRP-078 NATO green, MRP-136 intermediate blue, MRP-167 light earth and MrColor C117 RLM76 light blue…

…these were ten blended with a highly thinned coat of C117 in several layers.

Next I’ll be applying the RLM75.

until next time

Very nice work John, the undersides look great and it will be nice to see a 262 in the 74/75/76 scheme rather than the usual later war colours we usually see them in.

thanks

"in the flesh" the pale blue is a little more "uneven", which is the effect I was after, I guess I need a better (lighting) setup to show the "true" colour(s) but I'm very happy so far, "free-handing" the demarkation between the upper and lower camo' is something I'm really, nervously, looking forward to as I've never attempted it before. However, I "free-handed" the camo' on my last build, a Hurricane, and was very please with the result, I did cover the green and brown with black as she was a "night intruder" but after I've had a practice on the paint mule I'm sure it'll be passable, if not I can always start the paint again!

I find that pictures very rarely show the true variation we achieve on our painting through whichever means we use. I have very rarely been able to achieve satisfactory results with free-handing with an airbrush which is why I usually use masks of some kind or other.

This one's looking good, John. I like the effect you've got on the unpainted cover, and I think your RLM 76 has some nice variation showing too. I've started freehand painting the camo more often lately and I've found it's easier if you very lightly draw a pencil guideline (just enough to see, but not so much it's visible through the paint), and I use a 0.2mm needle and get in close with the airbrush to minimise overspray. You can always go back with the first colour afterwards to neaten up a bit if you need to

As RLM 75, to my eye, appears slightly lighter than RLM 74 I laid down that colour first, I started with a “marble layer” that was created using MRP-078 NATO green, MRP-241 dark gunship grey and MrColor C037 RLM 75 grey violet…

…and blended with a couple of layers of highly thinned C037.

Next I’ll be applying the RLM74.

That's looking good, John, and you're quite correct that RLM 75 is the lighter of the two shades

And I called in to see John today and can vouch for how good this looks in the plastic. Even better than it looks on this laptop.

We had a great chat for well over an hour.

Really nice work on the 75 John, the marbling is showing through nicely without being too apparent and your freehand airbrushing is very neat.

I masked the RLM 75 and made a marble layer with the C036…

53581812169_eeba881b8b_c.jpg

…and then blended with marble layer with highly thinned C036.

The remaining mottle was added with both C036 RLM74 and C037 RLM75.

Next I’ll be adding the insignia, aircraft codes and fuselage band.

That looks superb John, really nice work.

thanks but as you'll see in my next post I've decided to retry the mottles, I think their too large and a bit too splodgy (is that a word?)

It is now. Try a micro mesh rub first to thin them down a bit perhaps?

After looking at the mottle(s) I decided that I didn’t like how they looked, so they were over sprayed and re-done…

53583191803_aa8ffa6295_c.jpg

53583416105_f832790a7c_c.jpg

Although I’m not using a scheme from the Tamiya offerings this scheme…

53583295454_3232a2a072.jpg

…is close to what I want to achieve, and I’ve noticed the mottle(s) is nowhere near as large as my previous attempt.

Here’s what I achieved.

53583067146_b7a79068f7_c.jpg

53583392859_89dd004223_c.jpg

These mottles are nearer to what I want however I don’t think without a lot more practice I’ll get them closer to what I had “in my head” so I’ll get back to the insignia and markings.

until next time

That's looking pretty superb to me, John, in both mk 1 and mk 2 mottles. You've made a great job of the wavey deliniation between the upper & lower camo too

Your mottles look far better than I would be able to achieve John.

thanks chaps

I've a Tamiya Me109 lurking in the stash, I had intended doing something "different" with it but she may well end up with mottle camo' as I've quite enjoyed the process

I’m using a Montex mask set…

53537238384_8730431eb8_z.jpg

…for the insignia and aircraft numbers.

Some time ago I came across these fuselage bands…

53582280092_c44797a07a_n.jpg

…for no specific reason, apart that I like the black and white its got nothing to do with the fact I support Fulham absolutely nothing 😜, I’ve chosen JG26.

53583718810_9a655103a2_c.jpg

53585245333_4793e4138a_c.jpg

Montex supply two sizes of swastika, I’ve used the larger version to provide a white outline…

53583596609_685c9ceeb6_c.jpg

…the smaller one was used for the black, which was quite fiddly to line up.

53584156062_ccc37ef16d_c.jpg

53584156042_9b21fe953b_c.jpg

For the upper wing Balkenkreuz I used the “white version”…

53583492488_84b11b80db_c.jpg

53583718825_e4d292ae14_c.jpg

…the under wing were the “black and white” version…

53585364753_f1b446a675_c.jpg

53584275652_64c0d4404f_c.jpg

Finally the fuselage Balkenkreuz and numbers were added…

53585364728_11959556bc_c.jpg

53585464459_865b9dbbcc_c.jpg

Next I’ll be making a start on the weathering.
