Yg Models Posted January 27, 2024 Posted January 27, 2024 (edited) Before i keep expanding my mini AFVs, i enjoy painting miniatures. But before both of them, I build sci-fi kits since childhood. It all began by a birthday present (old gunpla: 1/100 Gundam RXF91) from uncle. I found a new hobby from it. At first, i saved my lunch fee for school to buy gunpla during secondary school period. 99% of them were just followed the manual to assemble, no painting. I stopped this hobby during college. Then after works, I return to modeling, start to paint them, from enamel based, lacquer based, to current acrylic. Since i like camo cum weathering, i feel acrylic + techniques from miniatures suit me most. Different from most of the western modelers in BM who focus on film kits, i grow up / surrounding by Japanese comics, animes, games, etc. Therefore, 95% of my sci-fi kits are related to them. I mostly like kits relate to EVA, Zoids, Ma.K, FSS, MGS/ZoE, GitS, etc. Let show some builds by me: I have a thread in same style in AFV WIP, to post what kits i bought, prepared, but no mood or schedule to paint. Some of them already kept under bed / above bookshelf for years, few of them are lucky that i dig it out, e.g. twelve MGS in once. Since i can't follow the ideal principle "build one - buy one", I 100% won't finish all of them before getting too old to hold a brush. If you interested in any of them, please feel free to discuss with me, from that box of kit, comic/anime/game behind it, comment/experience of the brand published that kit, etc. Maybe after some chatting, i might regain my passion to awake it from long sleeping.😏 EVA: Evangelion is one of my favorite anime, the mecha design is so different from standard, and the presentation in anime is two steps ahead that generation. I bought all the LM-HG series + PG in childhood. now only like Koto's EVA series (only passed the awaken EVA-01 & white ver of EVA-13). When a model kit came from one of my favorite, i usually buy two boxes. Hence, even you already see i painted EVAs above, i still have another box under bed or above bookshelf. Since New OVA is ended, seems Koto won't continue this series, so no hope for black EVA-03, silver EVA-04, old white big mouth EVA-05, new green 4-leg EVA-05, EVA- Mark.6, etc.😭 i painted one in blue, next will paint in yellow. i painted one w/o cloak, next will wear cloak and stand of maritime. i painted one in pink, but no scheme for next one, still pink? I painted one in field green, next will field beige as per concept sketches. just finish the beast in last year. just grout and sand it, but temperature drop too much, fingers freeze, will paint it soon. new EVA in 2025 MGS / ZoE: Metal Gear Soild & Zone of the Enders, both are designed by Yoji Shinkawa, one of my favorite mecha designer. Also, his most famous design works: Metal Gear Rex, Jehuty, Anubis are designed in his college period. I met Rex in the PC-port ver of Metal Gear Soild, similar to Evangelsion, its story telling, gameplay, music are two steps ahead from that generation of game industry. Yoji's model kits also published by Koto (maybe after MGS3 period?). And i am so hyper to pre-ordered nine boxes at once, then Koto published black ver, destroyed ver of REX, Ray, ZoE, ..., etc. But i just keep them under bed for couple years. Until i develop my acrylic paint techniques and dig half of them. bought too many in once, the shop even not necessary to unload them from card box. only have one Black ver & built. only have one box of demaged ver, plan to make diorama. have three Ray, only painted one in Rex camo. Sahelanthropus from MGSV, paint none of them. a set of 1/35 characters in MGSV. Ludens, lcon of Kojima's game company. i painted one, next will paint in orange spacesuit. Trike from Kojima latest game: Death Stranding. I painted one in red. painted two Jehuty before, this one is EX ver that i stopped due to poor result in spraying. pair of Anubis. stopped at sanding. painted two VicViper before, bought third box when republish. FA: FrameArms is a special, remarkable series by Koto, without pre-advertising as per typical method: comics, anime, games. Koto just inverted different mecha designers to dig out their old sketches, group them together into a mecha series that changed sci-fi model kit market in Japan, then further develop into more popular FAG series, which focus on female action figure. Even Bandai is jealous the success of Koto, clones it as 30MM series... However, i only like two mecha in FA series. my third box of Kagutsuchi-Kou + booster pack x2. plan to build 4-leg giant mech. Kagutsuchi-Otsu Fencer & Sniper, i painted one Fencer one Sniper, but still remain another pair. even Metal Gear designer, Yoji Shinkawa provided two MG style sketches for FA series. And same as Metal Gear Rex, both of them have black ver. too. BaiHu x2, YingHu, LingHu XuanWu, MingWu FSS: i know Five Star Stories in secondary school period, first saw a very cool resin kit MH example in local modeling magazine, then buy volume 1-8 of comics in once. Mechanical design of FSS is related to knight, idol, fashion, very elegant. Comics is written by Mamoru Nagano, one of my favorite mecha designer too. He began FSS in 1986 after leave Sunrise (a division of current bandai), but keep drawing, not finish yet. In the past, most of the FSS kits are published in resin, i.e. limited stock, and difficult to re-cast due to mold distortion. Wave has some FSS injection kits, but QC not so good. Now, Volks scans its resin FSS into 3D modeling, then publish in injection kit which called IMS. Therefore, most of my FSS are Volks IMS series. 1/100 KoG x2, LED Mirage V3-IN, Terror Mirage, Jagd Mirage, Va-Io-La, Yen-Xing 1/144 A-Toll, Batsh, LED Mirage, Junchoon, Bang-Doll, V-Siren Neptune, V-Siren Prominence Ma.K: different from the kits from comics, anime or games. Maschinen Krieger (Ma.K ZBV3000) is designed by Kow Yokoyama, he mixed AFV, anti-gravity, american space program with scifi powered suits which posted in the Japanese hobby magazine monthly since 80s. There has several series, scale, brands in the market, i mostly enjoy wave's 1/20 series which gives me blank suit in suitable size for camo cum weathering. And this series keep republishing same kit every couple years, so you will get it in the future if missed this time. Now i am looking for PKA, but the postage is too high (4000yen tiny box of kit charged 4000yen for postage)... SAFS Mk3 A8/R8 Fireball SG PKA [weltraum] ausf.F P.K.A. Ausf H0 Snake-Eye Reconnaissance, Seapig PKA Ausf.E Eismusik MK44H-0 Whiteknight Prototype female characters x4 cold zone maintenance team refresh girl GitS: Ghost in the Shell is my top three anime, especial the Stand Alone Complex season 1, 2, SSS which directed by Kenji Kamiyama (2045 just a rubbish). Different from original comics by Masamune Shirow or film by Mamoru Oshii. S.A.C. has enough episodes to develop world setting, characters, social problems in it. Certainly the cyberpunk setting from comics is cool, but anime rise it to next level. However not many model kits in the markets, which is shame for those cool mechanical designs. Koto is going to republish GitS kits in spring, and i already pre-order each of them, even i have plenty of them in bookshelf... Prototype HAW206 I painted two HAW206 in the past, but this is a cool walking tank, and i believe my camo/weathering skills improved a lots. so buy again. Jigabachi AV Tachikoma x2 1/18 3d print of comic ver Tachikoma Zoids / HEXA: I haven't play the original motor toys Zoids in 80s, also haven't watch its anime. But its beast + mechanical design really match my cup of tea. so almost bought all Koto's HMM series. However, space requirement for finished zoids kits even worse than the humanoid gunpla. So i stopped now. HEXA is the original series by Koto after it long-term license of zoids ended. It is a mix of beast form mech with technique/gimmick developed in Frame Arms series. But overall quality only half of Zoids ... I built two Kong, still have a red one. I built many GODOS, but still it again. I built 3 interesting Raptor, this is new ver. I built two raddar before, this is new ver. Saurer x5, for dinosaur, i only built several small one. sworder x2 Stinger x2, Guysack, Gurantula Gojulas x2 I built two Liger Zero, but haven't buy the original white one, so bought this red ver and sp. ver (in game?) i even haven't buy the classic shield liger, AB liger, so bought the republish edition I built 3 tigers before, this one is the ugly Zoids Wild ver. I built 4 Wolfs, this is fifth. I built two Horns before, but missed original one, so got one when republish. HEXAGEAR x9 (all thrown away😅) MS: my modeling began with a old gunpla: RXF-91. Then half of my childhood building bandai kits before shifting to PC games. Now, i prefer HG series in Gunpla, interested mechanical design is in b/w AoZ ~ CC period... N.T.S. PMX-001 Palace Athene. Bandai miniatures, but molding is gunpla style, lots of gaps. 1/144 Typhoeus Gundam Chimera, i like its AoZ giga suit design. 1/144 MS-06F-2 Zaku II-F2, i built this Zaku more than ten ago, and gave to friend. Shin Getter Dragon SD Macross VF-1A Miniatures: When I was in college, a classmate who studied in UK before, bought his blood angels to school, so he could play a game in the afternoon (from Kowloon to chess club in HK Island). That was I first time saw chess-like model kits in my life. This maybe 20 years ago, basically no shop sells miniatures except that chess club, even it was mailed from UK itself (doesn't have online-shops, amazon in two decade before). I remember I joined he to club chess two or three times, however rolling dices, measuring distance is quite boring for me... After that, PC RTS game: Dawn of War (2024) was published (btw, Relic still a good developer in that moment, latest Homeworld 3 is terrible.) Then, I graduated, work hard, and returned to modeling hobby. First I painted kits with poisonous tamiya & gaia colors. Time jumped to 2018(?), GW reopened the import department for HK market. I started to see miniatures in local model shops (disappear now), and watched Duncan's youtube tutorials of how to paint miniatures with acrylics. So I threw all the previous paints and replace with whole series of GW & AV colors. My journey of painting minis begin... Maybe I knew Blood Angels at first, it became one of my favorite factions, I also like Tau, Death Guard in 40K setting; Undead, Vampire, Ghost, Giblin, etc in Fantasy. However, GW become greedy now, raise price every half year (?), Therefore, I am looking for other brands of minis... You could search the image to find it is 2.5 height than typical MH, i.e. I don't have space to store if build it😂 Xen-Sing, another recast of old resin kit, but QC of this one is low. A-Toll, Batsh, LED Mirage, Junchoon, Bang-Doll, V-Siren Neptune, V-Siren Prominence, all just cut the parts. KoG x2, would buy twice is because poor Volks publishes two kinds of shoes & weapons in two version. LED Mirage V3-IN, the only kit at home which haven't cut the runners. If volks publishes 1/144 ver in the future, i would throw this big one away. Terror Mirage Va-Io-La, i built a resin ver before, but Va-Io-La is one of my favorite MH in FSS, so buy again. Yg Models Posted February 8, 2024 Author Posted February 8, 2024 (edited) not every sci-fi kit in my stack is no progress. for example, i am building gunpla: Typhoeus Gundam Chimera. I not often buy gunpla now, unless its related to A.O.Z. series. Likes this one, the MA suit actually is MRX-010, which will use on TR-6 too... my color scheme is white, so spray the black MS into white, but still inconsistent after 3 layers. The customer even paid lower than the money i paid for that kit, not to mention the time, paints, techniques i put on them... btw, how much will you willing to pay for them?🙄 if want to live in warehouse, i require to spray 10 boring gunpla per month. in the meantime, hope those customers won't disappear or shift to other low-price finished gunpla. that why i choose to throw old kits directly. 😂 remember the photo of my bookshelf in previous reply? to reserve space for books or future kits, I had thrown many old kits before lunar new year: bike x4, F1 x3, HGUC >30, Gundam Artifact Qubeley x2, big miniatures x6, big Ma.K x1, Koto SD x2, egg fleet x1, SD shoebill x1, FA x4, FAG x2, AC x3, MechColle x2, etc. Edited February 16, 2024 by Yg Models 2
Pete in Lincs Posted February 16, 2024 Posted February 16, 2024 It's sad that people won't pay good prices. And it's sad that you have to throw your beautiful models away due to lack of space. But, we do what we want to do and (mostly) enjoy it. At least we don't waste money on something that is more temporary and only lasts for an hour or so. I've just had a clear out and thrown out some models. But then, I did build them fifty plus years ago! Airfix Spitfires, 109's etc. Very rough! Why did I keep them? 2

I enjoy the process, get the experience which enrich my paint style, train up the techniques, also took record photos for each of them. just not many modelers in HK accept this, some of them even think what they built is "art". for me, modeling more relate to craft. Shame you threw that many HG's away, could of used some of the parts for custom builds. Every thought of listing the older kits on Ebay as "spares/repairs"? You might not get alot for them, but you might get something which might be a little better than just throwing them out? Just an idea. Waiting for more Mortar headd goodness oh and the TR-6. Always have time for an AoZ build. Maybe you should have covered those Chimera parts in grey first then coated in white? Trying to blast white over black/red will test your sanity. Kind regards, Dazz
Chaz Gordon Posted February 18, 2024 Posted February 18, 2024 I really must get around to getting a couple of Mechs, I'm not that into mechs as such, but they are a really cool subject to paint and detail, especially if you have the freedom to just paint what you want, not follow some kind of rulebook.

I built a Space Marine 'EPIC' scale Titan once, so much to play with, and the freedom to do what I want because the universe provides for you to make up your own factions, so I made up 4 different factions of Space Marines, down to the type of world they are from and their specialist combat styles and terrains. I'm sad that the Epic scale is no longer catered to very much by GW, the figures weren't much on the detail, but the range of vehicles was enormous.
