Tamiya 1/72 F-84G

Recommended Posts

It's a brilliant kit so I think you'll like it if you're looking for a relaxing build. It's too bad the kit doesn't seem to be readily available anymore.

Anyways, have fun!

Welcome JB, a good choice and good to see the straight wing F-84 getting some love.

Good luck with your build.

A productive Saturday day at the bench.

First up the traditional ‘what’s in the box?’ Photo.

First paint applied.

Cockpit. The decal seatbelts disintegrated on me, not sure what I did wrong. Will add some tape belts.

Ready to close up the fuselage.

Before long I had something that looked like an airplane. The kit went together like a dream.

Knew things were going to well!

The decal sheet has definitely seen better days. Tried a couple and they just shattered on the backing paper. Could have tried placing they small bit by small bit, but think restoring a Roman mosaic would have been easier. Should have been forewarned as the seat belt decals did the same.

I have put this build to bed for a while, whilst I consider my next step.

You could try to apply a coat of Liquid decal film from Microscale (or something similar) to see if that's enough to keep them together.

Tried some Microscale liquid decal film, they still weren’t behaving properly, so it’s time for Plan B.

Search through my stock of aftermarket decals and found an old Microdecal sheet. Don’t recall when or why I bought it (seems to be the story for a lot of the sheets in the stash) but will give it a go.

Chose the top left scheme, of an aircraft based at RAF Wethersfield.

Tentatively tried one decal, it seemed to behave properly so cracked on.

Calling this one done. Decals finished and a very light panel wash.

Really nice kit, goes together very well. Don’t really know what the issue was with the kit decals, but really happy with how the replacement Model Decals decals (20 yrs older than the kit) performed.

Will take some proper photos for the gallery later in the week.

Can also make a start on my Baby Boomers entry.

A happy ending despite bad kit decals!

Maybe that was a good thing as the scheme is looking awesome. Nice build and gongrats on finishing the kit 😊
