Me three!

Looking forward to it as I've never built one before.   I'm a little conflicted about what to do with the radiator housings.  They are obviously more suited the the Griffon-engined variants as they are far too deep for a Merlin-engined XVI.  Should I just do a legacy build or should I fix them?

Sawing them off and simply refitting them would actually fix the problem as it would reduce the depth of the fairings.

Yep, the radiator housings are the one big issue, as I recall. Mine will be a nostalgia build, replicating (hopefully bettering!) my childhood effort! I tend to think that it's best to build these kits oob, as there are usually more modern kits that are better suited to creating an accurate miniature.

Cheers,

Mark

nodnodnod   In the case of the Spitfire XVI there is a modern Eduard kit but it seems to be in a similar category to avian dentition.   I'm wondering if it is possible to graft a Heller fuselage onto an Eduard Spitfire IXe kit.   But then again, there is an issue in that the Heller fuselage does not appear to have the bulged engine cowling required for the Packard Merlin.

Trivia alert:  the distinguishing feature between the Spitfire IX and XVI was that the former had a Rolls-Royce Merlin while the latter had a Packard Merlin.   It is nothing to do with the cut down fuselage and clipped wings.  The final few Mk.IXe's had a cutdown fuselage while the first batch of Mk.XVIs had the high back fuselage.

Well darn it, as often happens, I've been sent off into "Tempest land" with my research (aka 'time wasting activities').  I've also located my Heller Tempest (but its big brother from Eduard is trying to get invited).  Now I see that this build starts on the 18th- I had thought it was more like the 9th, which was already frustrating enough!

Oh, by the way, I remembered that I also have a Rapide, but my example has a vertical fin reminiscent of an orca's dorsal- curled over to one side a bit.  I suppose this would be as good a time as any to attempt to straighten it...

Had asssumed for some reason the heller super etendard and mirage 2000 were released the wrong side of the date for this, very pleased to discover they are both eligible and at least one of them will be in kingkit care package to me alongside the mirage iii, do have to check is the mirage 2000 still elliegble if its the N version with additonal parts first issue in '89?

Oooh, that's a tricky one! I guess it all depends on how much was new in '89.

Yes, now I’ve looked the kit history that’s scuppered it, the two seat fuselage and associated addons was the new bit not just the N weapons. Guess that means I will just have to get the etendard instead

You're on sure ground with the Étendard.

Well it's make your mind up time for this GB and I thought as I'm cutting back this year just re-visit a couple of my all time favourite Heller kits,so it will be the Hawker Tempest and F84 Thunderjet with

Cheers Mark, just ordered from King kit a Smer hi-tech boxing of the Tempest with a nice D-Day scheme and the oldest boxing of the F84 as I'm not bothered about the state of the decals but prefer a fresher

set of moulding's grand total £14 the pair.

Help, adjudication needed please. I have a 1979ish Lodela issue Vampie, PM-103, with the end of the box only, which is similar in style to the 1980 Heller Mistral boxing I have. However, the product no. is for the 1988ish Lodela RH-9283 reissue. Is it eligible, or am I just s.o.l?

20250105_145351

This is the box end of the Lodela.

20250105_145448

This, obviously is the Heller.

If I have read the rules correctly, I think I'm OK, but I just want clarification please, as it affects my wip header tile.

Cheers,

Chris.

Hi Pat.

Yep, aware of that, just confused (as usual) by box end and product no., as it is for 1988 issue, but is same sprues etc. Thanks for your help.

Cheers,

Chris.

@silverfox63

Chris,

Your Lodela Vampire looks like a straight re-box of the Heller kit, it even has the same artwork as the original Heller kit box.

I think the Heller product number is 283, unfortunately, I'm away from my reference tome (the Carbonel book), so I can't give you the final answer on the product number but I'm saying you're good to go with the Vampire.
