billn53 Posted January 10, 2024 Posted January 10, 2024 Ooohhh! An oldie but goodie (the Monogram kit, I mean). I’m definitely in on this one! 2
Charles68 Posted January 10, 2024 Posted January 10, 2024 I'm in. My dad also was at Thakli during 68 and 69 I believe. He was a missile tech. 2
Klaasdebouwer Posted January 10, 2024 Posted January 10, 2024 Classic kit. Built one back in the 80s. Didn't scribe the panel lines back then. Enjoy 1
Don Posted January 10, 2024 Posted January 10, 2024 I'm in! Love this kit. I've built probably a half dozen counting the single and two seaters. 1
exdraken Posted January 10, 2024 Posted January 10, 2024 very nice project! what a load out! did not know about those reskit pylons... 1
F-104 nut Posted January 12, 2024 Author Posted January 12, 2024 Started getting the cockpit cleaned up tonight . I will be using a old seemless sucker ejetion seat . The cockpuit was lacking a throttle . So isctach built one and added a little more detsail . Nose t start spraying the cockpit grey . F-104 nut Posted January 14, 2024 Author Posted January 14, 2024 Worked on the noew strut tonight . Kit instructions call to install the wheel while glue the left and ride side strut together . Hard to paint the tire and strut together. So i clppied thre axle pins off and drillled a hole all the wat through the strut . I'll either use a plastic axle or metal axle on installing the wheel . Installed the kit gun tonight which will be painted later . Got my Reskit 650 gallon center line tank which is really nice ! Also pulled out my F-105D T-Stick II which will be finished sometime this year . F-104 nut Posted January 22, 2024 Author Posted January 22, 2024 Progress time on the Thud tonight . Az-el antennas removed . Also removed some little hump areas from the tail section for for the Reskit burner can . Kit pitot glued on the nose cone . Once dry I will cut the kit pitot off in prep for the master brass pitot . Smudge Posted January 22, 2024 Posted January 22, 2024 Nice project. I've just picked up a couple of old Microscale decal sheets for Thuds (1/72). I'm big fan of the Vietnam era Thunderchief's. Did your dad's aircraft have a name or artwork? 1

F-104 nut Posted January 25, 2024 Author Posted January 25, 2024 (edited) More Reskit items arrived for the Thud build . The engine nozzle set from reskit is just beautiful and ful of detail. NO modifivation required at all to the Monogram airframe at all . The detail on the nozzle and nozzle flaps is just amazing as all the other pieces . Also included three different nozzle pedal positions . I will have to buy more of these for my other Monogram Thud kits ! I also decided to add some detail to the wheel well by removing the kit proved auxiliary inakes screen . I drilled the kit ones out and cleaned up the hole which was really easy then used a screen mesh froma faucet sink aerator . They come with for two upper and two lower. The inside upper ones are the real fine screens that you want to use . I then cut it to fit and and glued it with super glue . Now to do the oother side the same way . billn53 Posted January 26, 2024 Posted January 26, 2024 Yeomanlike work going on here. I see many parallels with what I’m currently doing with Trumpeter’s 1/72 Thud, especially your work on the auxiliary air intake in the main gear bay 👍 1
dnl42 Posted January 26, 2024 Posted January 26, 2024 A lot of good work going on here! Clearly a labor of love. 1
basket Posted January 27, 2024 Posted January 27, 2024 WOW ! I love those Monogram kits. Very nice upgrade so far. I'm taking a seat. 1
David H Posted January 27, 2024 Posted January 27, 2024 Mee Likee! I know this is still very early in the game, but as you know, we talked about the wobbly landing gear. I know you have some thoughts on how to make it stronger. However, i thought i'd mention that since the axles point inwards, you could use that trick to align the gear struts i demonstrated with the Buccaneer. Except instead of using a piece or metal rod, you take a piece of Evergreen tubing and slide it over the axle stubs. If the tubing is cut accurately enough, and you use something slow acting like epoxy or liquid cement, you could use it to spread/set the legs apart to give them the proper stance as well as set the forward "rake" equally on both sides. Just a friendly suggestion. -d- 1 1

UberDaveToo Posted January 28, 2024 Posted January 28, 2024 (edited) I've always loved century series jets. Thuds are my my favorite... ...Right after the Delta Dart! Note: My dad didn't go to 'Nam, he worked the F-106 for the 48th FIS at Langley VA when that fracas was going on. The Robins Air Museum has the bird he was assigned to on display... Oh cool I love the Century series also and huge fan of the 106 . Small world my dad was also with the 48th FIS F-15C 87-89 before he ritired after 24 years as crew chief on fighter jets 😀 1
David H Posted January 28, 2024 Posted January 28, 2024 18 hours ago, Pajarito said: Hi Brian, Who can resist an upgraded Monogram 1/48 F-105D kit! I couldn't, so I even bought the DMold forward fuselage correction set for mine. I'm still waiting on the ResKit intake set to start building it. Hope it happens soon. As for the wobbly landing gear, I was worried about that fact as well. Had gotten the awful SAC white metal set and it was a no-go. For some time I tried getting the G-Factor brass set to no avail, so I traded for one of Ali's brass landing gear sets even though it was designed for the Trumpy kit. Think the Aerocraft set still can be adapted to the Monogram kit. Hi David, Genuinely interested in watching how your method would work on the Thud kit. Guess I'm obsessed about the F-105D. I have even gotten the Trumpy wings (because of the deployed flaps, slats and spoilers), and found out that the way they attach to the Chinese kit is very similar to how they attach on the Yank one, so I'll also graft them onto the Monogram Thud kit. Cheers, Igna Hi Igna, Brian has concerns (as do i) about not only the "wobble factor" but also about the anchoring of the lateral retraction struts, where they go into the wings. Much like the installation of the gear struts in the F-101B Voodoo kit the location is vague, and i'm being charitable here. I agree that brass/bronze gear struts would go a long way toward ensuring a more robust gear. My technique using the tube will go a long way towards helping with alignment, but it won't help for structural strength. Brian has plenty of spare parts so he's got lots of room to experiment. 1
Klaasdebouwer Posted January 28, 2024 Posted January 28, 2024 Interesting build. Eye for detail. And so cool we have all this aftermarket stuff available these days. That will truly enhance this kit. 1
F-104 nut Posted January 30, 2024 Author Posted January 30, 2024 (edited) Instrument panel sprayed with Tamiya LP flat black . I first drybrushed model master neutral grey then brush detail knobs , switch's with Tamiya acrylics . Then future for dials brushed in and Tamiya clear red for scope . F-104 nut Posted February 3, 2024 Author Posted February 3, 2024 (edited) Tonight on the Republic Thud channel . I plugged the outboard pylon holes since this build I'll only be using the inboard pylons . Got the right side aux air intake screen drilled out and glued on . Got the 650 Gal Centerline tank assembled . Looks way better than the kit one . I’ll be using a aerobonus SEA resin figure with the build which will be a nice touch .
