Homebee Posted January 9, 2024 Posted January 9, 2024 (edited) Expected in Spring (May ?) 2024 - ref. A06023 - Boeing Chinook HC.1 Source: https://uk.airfix.com/products/boeing-chinook-hc1-a06023 V.P. Edited January 14 by Homebee 23 1
Adam Poultney Posted January 9, 2024 Posted January 9, 2024 Not quite my cup of tea but if I was going to do a helicopter this is the one. I'll put that down as a maybe to purchase 3
cerperal Posted January 9, 2024 Posted January 9, 2024 Finally (what will hopefully be) an accurate RAF Chinook at a reasonable price. I shall be preordering mine to make sure they release some later models too. I'd be very happy with the releases this year if it was only this
Mr T Posted January 9, 2024 Posted January 9, 2024 Interesting choice, but I probably will buy, I've an Italeri one in the stash, and I think the Airfix one will be better. Glad it's an HC1.
bootneck Posted January 9, 2024 Posted January 9, 2024 I have the Revell 1:48 scale HC.1 to build and I might just get this 1:72 version for the Mini Diorama GB 2025 Mike
cherisy Posted January 9, 2024 Posted January 9, 2024 Silly question as it's early doors but does anyone know if it's new tool or the old incantation?

Mike Posted January 9, 2024 Posted January 9, 2024 I'm going to be "that guy" about it, and hope they see the market for a new Chinook in my preferred scale of 1:48, but I'm not going to get all toys out of the pram on the subject. I'm really pleased about the new tools in 1:72, as their existence makes a 1:48 tool just that teeny bit more likely Plus, who in their right mind would begrudge anyone being able to buy a kit that's not in "their" scale 5

RichG Posted January 9, 2024 Posted January 9, 2024 (edited) Not something I was expecting at all, but on reflection I'm looking forward to it and pleased its a new tool in 1:72. It fits right into the Airfix "late cold-war" series. A 1/48 version, beautiful though I'm sure it would be, would be just a wee bit too big for me with the rotors, but I'll definitely get one of these. I've a few unbuilt 1/72 Chinooks in the stash including a Matchbox & an Airfix reboxing (Italeri?) from about 20 years ago. Probably now dispose of them. With the kit box artwork ready and the marking options announced - looks like its release is not too far off. Probably something in 1/48 to be announced later in the year. Nice one Airfix.👍 Rich Edited January 9, 2024 by RichG
noelh Posted January 9, 2024 Posted January 9, 2024 If anything an actual Airfix Chinook is way past overdue. I might even get one.
Karearea Posted January 9, 2024 Posted January 9, 2024 This is definitely the ‘Didn’t know I wanted it’ release of 2024 for me (and might finally pick up a Junglie Sea King too). Vividly remember a line of Chinooks thundering along above the motorway as I returned to Heathrow on my last UK trip. 1
Meatbox8 Posted January 9, 2024 Posted January 9, 2024 And there was me trying to avoid RAF helicopters for the sake of keeping the stash down. 5
cardiff guy Posted January 9, 2024 Posted January 9, 2024 Very nice Ill have two, but totally left field as apparently helicopters don't sell, buy on balance I would have liked to see a Wessex or Puma first. If the Belvedere comes with a new canopy ill get one of those too. 1
JamesP Posted January 9, 2024 Posted January 9, 2024 I remember in a model mag from the 80’s was a picture of a diorama using the Airfix skeleton slump against a sign which said “Waiting for the Airfix Chinook”. 5
Max Headroom Posted January 9, 2024 Posted January 9, 2024 Nice subject. I’d buy one too except I still have an unbuilt Matchbox one. I see the two types of filter are catered for. Doesn’t look like the enlarged saddle tanks of later versions could be there? Trevor

There may be a reason ours have been in the stash for many a year ... Edited January 9, 2024 by klr

Trevor That would be helpful for making a civilian conversion - it is unfortunate that Whirlybird did shut down.
Max Headroom Posted January 9, 2024 Posted January 9, 2024 @klr and @LN-KEH Mine is literally buried deep within my stash and has been since the 80’s, rather like the Ark of the Covenant in the Indiana Jones movie! I even have the Airwaves etched fret set to improve the engine filter. Never did get the Canovac improved windscreen though…. Trevor 2
Matthew1974 Posted January 9, 2024 Posted January 9, 2024 Silly question but many years ago while serving in Afghanistan I was stationed with Brits in the south of that country on one of my tours. On a couple of occasions we rode out on RAF Chinooks to do things at night. Could these have been HC.1s or were they most likely later marks?
RichG Posted January 9, 2024 Posted January 9, 2024 (edited) 44 minutes ago, Matthew1974 said: Could these have been HC.1s or were they most likely later marks? You didn't mention dates but most likely they were Chinook HC.2/HC.2As. All the surviving RAF Chinook HC.1 fleet (32 airframes) were returned to Boeing for upgrade to CH-47D standard in the 1990's for further service with the RAF, designated Chinook HC.2; the first of which returned to the UK in 1993. Three additional HC2 Chinooks were ordered with delivery beginning in 1995. Another six were ordered in 1995 as Chinook HC.2A. The Chinook HC.4 (updated HC.2/HC.2As) was deployed to Afghanistan from December 2012, initially by 7 Squadron in support of Special Forces and then with other squadrons in Helmand in 2013. Hope that helps. Rich Edited January 9, 2024 by RichG 4
