Eduard Bf 110 1/72 (Not a sharkmouth!) ++Finished++

Recommended Posts

Happy New Year everyone

I'll be kicking off 2024 with this Bf 110 from Eduard

2023-12-31-12-52-00.jpg

It's one of the oldest stash residents and has nearly made it to the build pile on a number of occasions

It's time has now come

Here's the plastic

2023-12-31-12-53-00.jpg

Instructions, decals, PE, masks and, for some reason, a loose nose-piece (everything is still bagged  )

2023-12-31-12-53-26.jpg

I also have these, As it transpires, the camo paint masks will be of little use

2023-12-31-12-53-51.jpg

There are several schemes, at least one of which has a sharkmouth. That seems to be the popular option for other Bf110 builds, so I plan to do this ....

2023-12-31-12-54-25.jpg

It's a strange mix, mainly due to replacement parts having been fitted but not overpainted

More soon(ish)

/P

Welcome, Peter :) Not this boxing, but I have an Eduard 1/72 110 in the stash and it looks to be a nice kit. I like the mismatched panels on that scheme too

Welcome, I have built one myself. I used leftover Ju 88 decals for the wide white upper half-only fuselage band. I brush painted it with Revell Anthrazit instead of full black, and was very happy with the result. V-P

Thanks everyone

Plastic (and PE) was bothered earlier

First job was to sort the sprues and remove all the unneeded parts

2024-01-06-12-49-54.jpg

Then I attacked the cockpit

2024-01-06-13-34-55.jpg

The first of the PE replaces the pilot's pedals

2024-01-06-13-52-33.jpg

Ready for paint

I think/hope I can stick on the PE bits after it's all beed sprayed. There seems to be (just) enough rooom to manouever
2024-01-06-14-04-29.jpg

Then I just started winging it

2024-01-06-15-25-14.jpg

And here's where I left everything

2024-01-06-16-55-55.jpg

Tomorrow should see the rest of the internals stuck together then RLM02 sprayed

More soon(ish)

That's a fantastic start, Peter! And a lot nicer looking a kit than my Airfix one. I like your sprue holder as well

It's really useful but I'm thinking on replacing it with the Hobbyzone module to save some desk space

I completely agree. It's a great kit

Anyway

The bits on the insides of the fuselage were fitted

2024-01-07-10-31-21.jpg

then I sprayed it all with Halfords rattlecan primer

2024-01-07-12-18-20.jpg

While that was drying, I started on the landing gear

2024-01-07-12-18-36.jpg

Then sprayed the interior parts with SMS RLM02

It's the first tiome I've tried SMS paints, but it won't be the last

2024-01-07-13-00-00.jpg

These were "fun"

2024-01-07-13-35-14.jpg

And in case you were wondering, I did manage to stick the PE into the cockpit

2024-01-07-17-19-43.jpg

Only the seatbelts to go then I can button 'er up

Not much progress to report, but surprisingly it's almost ready for paint

the PE seatbelts were installed then I joined both sides

2024-01-13-14-31-48.jpg

And stuck it all to the wings

2024-01-13-15-01-27.jpg

Prep for canopy masking

I usually remove the unused tape as it makes lifting the masks easier

2024-01-14-11-06-23.jpg

And all of the canopy masking complete

2024-01-14-11-53-01.jpg

Then stuck on to the fuselage

2024-01-14-13-15-28.jpg

PE added to the landing gear

2024-01-14-16-43-33.jpg

and started sticking the remaining bits on the underside

2024-01-14-16-43-46.jpg

there are only about a dozen parts left, so I should be in the paintshop next weekend

Mpre soon(ish)

Your wait is over

Primer on

2024-02-17-14-18-00.jpg

(There's a Mossie in there as well, in case you were wondering)

Tail camo
2024-02-18-14-28-54.jpg

And underside bits that ain'tn't black

2024-02-18-14-29-01.jpg

then all the bits that are black

(I nearly forgot to paint the whie bit on the fuselage, but remembered just in time)

2024-02-24-16-44-13.jpg

Need to mottle the tail, then gloss for stickers

The end is nigh

Quick update

Most of the making removed from the airframe

2024-02-25-13-14-21.jpg

It'll do

It's also since been clearcoated

Some of the greeblies appear to have disappeared. I may need to dig out the platicard

After which, decals and final assembly

want to get yet one of these Eduard beauties to build!

The partially camouflaged tail and a dash of white really light up the otherwise black airplane

I think I need to add a few more to the stash.

The scheme really tells a tale of the aircraft, field replacements of parts, probably due to battle damage

Time to start the decorations

2024-03-02-13-54-25.jpg

Port and upper half done. I think I used the wrong crosses

It's also a bit strange that the "D" is white outlined, but the others aren't
2024-03-02-14-16-25.jpg

And starboard
2024-03-02-15-17-28.jpg

Finally the underside

2024-03-02-15-17-49.jpg

There are stencils 😱

Probably the outlined "D" only, because the Geschwader and Staffel codes were irrelevant when you were the only Bf 110 equipped Nachtjagdstaffel in the whole Mediterranean and North Africa theater :giggle:

It's looking good with the markings on, Peter. I've seen other Luftwaffe aircraft with only the aircraft's identifier onlined like that, maybe to aide in identification of particular airframes?

All the way to decals and still on page 1.  Glad I caught this one before you finish it (at this rate, in the next post!).  Great work, especially crisp paint.

That sprue organiser is a game changer.

Thanks Mark.

I tend not to waffle, so my threads are short

I've upgraded from the plastic sprue organiser to a HobbyZone module. Although the original was great, the slots were too narrow to cope with some kits

I added some stencils

2024-03-05-16-17-38.jpg

the rest are black and are not being applied as they won't ever be seen. Life's too short for that kind of effort

She's looking very nice, Peter :) You made the right call on the stencils. I went as far as making my own replacement stencil decals in red for my Ar 555 as the kit ones were black and I'd painted the underside black. They still aren't visible :cwl:

Final few steps to get this over the line

Satin coat applied

2024-03-09-12-02-26.jpg

Then started I unmasking the canopy

This is when a minor disaster struck

I spent nearly 30 minutes trying to remove the last piece of tape from the side windows

It just wouldnt budge

The canopy started to come apart, which is when I discovered I had stuck the part on the wrong way round

:swear:

The masking tape was inside the plane

It's all sort of recovered now but it's not pretty, and no, I didn't take pictures that show how much of a numpty I was :banghead:

Anyhow, it's done

2024-03-09-15-04-25.jpg

Thanks to @vppelt68 and @81-er for the GB, @Enzo the Magnificent for keeping the twins well behaved, and everyone else for likes, comments or just for looking

I'll continue here with my Mossie build and I'm heading over to the Baby Boomers to play with my chopper

i'll post some pics in the gallery soon(ish)
