I am planning a street scene in Northern Ireland in the early days, 1969/1970, and I am looking to get some kit figures that I can convert to the typical poses of the day.  I already have Firing Line/David Parkins figures but I want to try and get others.  Can anyone recommend any 1:35 scale kits that would suit converting to the poses below?  Perhaps kits from ICM, Miniart or Masterbox possibly?

Northern Ireland 1969 - note without flak jackets.

The only figures I can think of with 58 webbing is the Tamiya stretcher party set! British figures of that period just don’t exist🙁

Suitable figures for this period are pretty much non-existent these days, other than DJ Parkins Firing Line. I think there were other manufacturers from that era that made contemporary white metal British Army figures but which are now defunct. One I recall was a firm called Chota Sahib which produced 54mm white metal figures. Included in their range was a "British Army in Northern Ireland" 3 figure set (2 standing with SLRs, 1 with SMG, flak jackets, berets, mk 4 helmets) and a number of other NI figures. I had a French Foreign Legion Paratrooper (Algeria) from the range that was superb. I read earlier this year that someone in France had acquired the old Chota Sahib range. The originals might come up for sale on auction sites perhaps worth a look

Accurate Armour do a range of British Army resin figures might be worth a look - mostly 1990's or later but might be some options there for conversion https://accurate-armour.com/aa-products/135th-figures

I don't know if the old Airfix polythene 1/32 scale "Modern British Infantry" set might work for you I recall it was not actually a bad set (perhaps for some of the "big lads"). Airfix produced a nice range of "play vehicles" in 1/32 to go with these - Stalwart, Bedford RL, Abbot SPG. Be great to see these subjects  comeback as 1/35 kits to follow the Ferret kit.

I have looked through most of the plastic kit figures, it's just the poses don't seem to match British soldiers of the time.  I can cut away old/new eqpt and scratchbuild 58 pattern webbing etc.  I think to get the posture of the time, I may have to get Tamiya's WW2 British Infantry and modify their kit and weapons.  I agree about the Airfix 1:32 vehicles, although I've never actually seen one I have seen adverts in old magazines, they would look OK in this setting.

Hi Mike

I updated my earlier post.

I think the problem with this era seems to be the manufacturers of contemporary British Army NI figures in the 70's/80's were mostly working in 54mm / white metal, like the Firing Line range. They've subsequently gone out of business and their stuff is no longer available and no one has come along to fill the gap. One company in particular, "Chota Sahib" by Sid Horton, produced some great historic and modern (for then) figures including a range of early '70's NI figures in typical kit and poses very similsr to those in your photos. They do come up on ebay from time to time so perhaps worth a look.  I read that somebody in France has acquired the entire range and was planning to release them.

Thanks Rich.  What I mean about the poses at the time and before the shooting started, was that there was a lot of standing around or general patrolling, not action sequences.  Because they were in among civilians, who were going about their business, much of the time weapons tended to be held in the near vertical stance or pointed toward the ground.  I do have some Accurate Armour figures, plus their Humber Pig; however, many of them are either action or seated in vehicles types.  I would like to get the nearest poses to non-action figures in order that I can carve the arms to those non-agressive stances etc.

My intentions, hopefully, is to do a diorama similar to the third photo above, with the early Lightweight Land Rovers (note the headlamps in with the grill and not on the wing panels), plus a Bedford RL etc.

cheers,

In 1/32 are the Airfix Multipose British Infantry

Carve off the webbing on the torsos to make the jumpers *

afair they come with brodie, berets, peaked caps and turtles

The sten gun in the set would pass for a stirling

Being multipose you can build them anyway you like

Your still gonna have to scratch make the SLR

*years ago I started to convert a couple of the Multipose British Infantry to the type in Dr,Who in the 1970s

Yep Mike, I realised that; as I said the Chota Sahib range provided just that. Here's a few examples although its pretty academic as I said they're difficult to obtain these days, but worth looking out for...

Hi Dougie,

yes, I have that set.  I was trying to measure and model them in CAD to 3D print but my skills aren't that good yet, so decided to ask the question about ready-made 1:35 versions.

Mike

Hope this isn't old news but I've just come across a new range of figures (they weren't there when I last looked...🙂) from Badger Sett Studios who also make a fantastic range of 3D printed military vehicle models (also well worth a look for modern British Army kit). They have three Northern Ireland era British soldiers in the range and a couple of RUC officers so far. The poses and faces look excellent to me (arms and head are also seperate I think - so you could mix things up a bit with different heads etc). They're available in different scales including 1/35.

I'm planning to get some to go with the Saracen and Humber Pig models I got a few moths ago (both of which are incredible models).

Figures and extensive vehicle range available from https://badger3d.co.uk

Just received my order for a selection of 1/35 scale British Army figures (Operation Banner / Northern Ireland) from Syllys Mini Models, based in the Netherlands (figures illustrated earlier in the thread). They also do a range of vehicles, in addition to figures from other countries  (Dutch, Danish, Canadian, US Army etc). Really pleased with them and their poses look excellent. They'll go well with my figures / vehicles from Badger 3D. Perhaps not quite as crisp as the Badger figures but perfectly fine really. Unfortunately Bader3D has recently ceased trading so availability and any further additions to that range are probably unlikely.

Syllys figures are well worth a look if you're modelling this era.

Hi Rich,

that is great to hear,  thank you for letting us know about your order and where we can get those figures.  As a result, I have ordered the NI figures wearing berets.

cheers,

Mike

Sadly this post has been overtaken by events and the company has closed. What a shame - their stuff looks excellent.
