Well, seeing it's that time of year, I've bought not just one, but 3 :humbug::humbug::humbug:, or should I say 🦃🦃🦃!

A Mach 2 Britannia, A Mach 2 Comet 4C, and a Magna Short Sperrin (despite what I said in General Melchett's build many years ago - I feel better equipped to fight it now)

The upside is the whole shebang cost me just a smidgin over £100. All new, untouched by human hands!

Very nice. Clearly you’re an experienced modeller!
I have the Britannia along with the Transport Wings CP-107 Argus conversion.

Enjoy your kits

Cheers

I wouldn’t mind trying the Meng kit. It would make a great OOB build and the markings on the box top. Are the decals ok? With all those extra parts, it must have the missile bay I would hope. It would look good beside the Tu-95 and also a good size comparison.

The decals look okay on the sheet, but I haven't tried them yet. The kit has everything under the sun, including the "blown" canopy and choice of Genie rocket or gun mod...

The Airfix/MPC B-29s I snagged earlier aren't exactly new but the goodies I bought to dress them up are.

It takes a while for some of them to get here from overseas...

Might I pass this link on to you. I had the chance to crawl around “FIFI” one of only two B-29’s still flying.

Please note the tight tolerance on the main gear door’s to the wheels/tires. Also note the red resin plugs in the lower wing. They surround the bolts merging the two halves of wing together.

I do like that old B-29, I got my first one on Christmas Day 1969. It and the original Airfix Dakota mould will likely never see the light of day again either.

The Moonbat is a cool score, the original Batplane you might say.

Yours truly having a very merry Christmas indeed.

There's quite a few of those Dakota kits in that boxing on eBay, They're asking up to $60 for them though. I got a Revell 1/32 P-38 Lightning that year...

Wow! $60! I don’t think I need another one though, I’ve built 14 and still have 6 hanging from the ceiling. My favourite Airfix kit, pretty cool back then, moveable control surfaces, retractable landing gear.

That Revell P-38 was a pretty cool kit, got one for Christmas 79 and painted it up as Haleakala like the cover of the old “In Action”

The good old days

Cheers

Well just did my annual Christmas influx of buys. Started with a 1/700 Trumpy HMS Hood (1931) fit. For the Golden age of travel group build I am hosting. Next up is the 1/72 Academy F2H Banshee. Most likely for the USN/USMC aviation build. I splurged and bought my 1st Clear-prop models kit an La-5 late one in winter camouflage. I will keep that for a time I can enjoy a private build. Last up is an old 1/72 Hasegawa F-106. Ive not done a 106 since the 1980’s. If I can scrounge up decals from the Meng kit or Caracal. It will be built in Montana ANG markings for my Montana ANG collection.

Both Tamiya 1/48 F-35 variants from the Hobby City sale. Slightly indulgent, but they’ve been top of the Wishlist, and were heavily discounted. Not my scale nor usual era, but the F-35B in particular brings back the sort of excitement I got watching a Harrier in the hover at an airshow here in the 90s.

Will do the A as an Aussie example, but waiting to see which squadron flies one over here (if they do) for the Wanaka airshow next year. Hoping it’s 3 but would be happy with 75 or 77. Thinking Italian Navy for the B, or holding out for Singapore in a few years.

A bunch of AB Figures 20mm WWII miniatures, because with no social circle in my immediate area, I definitely need to start getting and painting wargaming stuff again.

In the same vein, I bought some 1/56 scale/28mm kits from Warlord Games: two Sdfkz 231s, an airborne jeep with Vickers K and trailer, and an SdfKz 10 with a flak gun on it, as I have a box of 28mm British airborne lying around as well. In my head, I always have ambitious visions (game out Grabner's last ride, a decidedly one-sided fight between five armoured cars, some half tracks, schwimmwagens, and the mightiest weapon in the 9th SS's arsenal, a motley assortment of Fords, Renaults, and Opels with cement filled drums as field expedient armour on one side, versus a crack paratrooper battalion with two six-pounders astride a chokepoint -- who wouldn't want to play the Germans in that?) that rely upon me having more world and time than I could possibly ever have.

Also, of late, a bunch of somewhat more terrestrial reference material than I normally read:

The World War II GI: US Army Uniforms 1941-45 in Color Photographs

The World War II Tommy: British Army Uniforms, European Theatre 1939-45

The British Soldier: From D-Day to VE-Day

For King and Country: British Airborne Uniforms, Insignia, and Equipment in World War II

Plus both volumes of The Montgomery Papers from the Army Record Society.

All the F-35 Sqn's are 2/3 RAF Manpower and 1/3 FAA, all Joint Force units.  I have a gut feeling OC 617Sqn was FAA a couple of years ago.

Just had a few Aeroplane Icons publications arrive, bought on special a few weeks back. Shackleton, Sabre and Jaaaag. The Shackleton issue in particular has some excellent reference which will prove very useful as I wrap up my AEW.2. There’s a great diagram which shows the rivet pattern better than anything I found online, if I’d had it earlier I think I would have tried to emulate the pattern with a tool.

I also received some Ronin Graphics decals for 1/72 RAAF F-35s of 3 and 77 Sqns. I think I’ll use one of these sets for the GB later in the year, my pace is too glacial to attempt a 1/48 Tamiya kit! They look like really nice decals, good registration and print quality.

Last for the year

From Aero Research

4018 F-86 Sabre Collection PDF download , latest release with 165 images of F-86 variants and derivatives.

From Amazon

The Boeing KC-135 Stratotanker:  More Than A Tanker book , by Robert S. Hopkins III , published by Crecy 2022 as an expanded Third Edition of the 2017 Second Edition which in turn was an expanded version of the Original 1997 Aerofax publication , basically a very heavily illustrated history covering a lot of what you might ever want to know about the KC-135 and variants.

From Creative Models

Heller 81252 1/35 Piste Circuit diorama base , different sellers describe this item as 1/43 or 1/35 but there is neither any scale shown on the box nor specific surface detail that ties it to either , essentially a two piece injection moulding 125 x 231 x 45 mm (at its highest) of a bend in a road/flat surface (one part) with verge and embankment tapering along one long edge (second part).

To distract myself from the strong urge to throttle my older two children:

Two boxes of 1/72 PSC Sdkfz 250 neu

One box of PSC 1/72 Humber II/IVs

One box of PSC 1/72 Sdkfz 231s

Grabner's last ride is much on the brain.
