Aoshima's Lamborghini Aventador Roadster

Hi all  

After having finished the Kawasaki Ninja I'll start with a new build. As already mentioned in the title of this tread, I'll build Aoshima's Lamborghini Aventador Roadster in 1/24 with the addition of the HobbyDesign Detail set.

 

The building instructions start with building the brakediscs and wheels, so I assembled the break disks from the detail set. I just saw on the picture that they will still need some clean-up...

 

Then the engine was assembled and painted. As there won't be seen much more of it, as it is common in temporary sports cars, I'll leave it as it is and insert it in the engine bay as soon as this is painted.

 

The interior tub was painted in Zero Paints' Dark Interior Gray and flocked with scaleproduction's anthracite flocking powder.

 

And finally work on the body started. I primed it with AK Interactive's grey primer and added three coats of green over it. When looking at the color I thought that it might have benn a fault to start with grey as the green turned out quite dull. So I added three coats of a  very well covering yellow (Triple Yellow by Zero Paints) and covered that up with another five coats of Lamborghini Verde Mantis to get the bright green I have now 🙂

The rims have already been painted in Alclad Gunmetal, I only forgot to take some pictures of them so far.

After almost two months there is a little progress on this build. Last thursday was clear coat day. Unfortunately this time I got some really nasty blobs of clear spit on the body. Meanwhile I've found three possible reasons:

1. some contaminants within the clear
2. blobs of clear on the tip of the nozzle which flew off
3. simply an error in handling the airbrush

"Unfortunately" I became a little overcautios after the first few spits and 1. did filter the clear when pouring it into the airbrush, 2. wiped off the nozzle from time to time with a brush soaked in cleaner and 3. took more care about the operation of the trigger to not cut off air supply too early. Anyhow I could continue without any more spitting. As I already applied three coats of clear about three weeks ago, I have now six to seven layers of clear on the body, so I can start to wet sand and polish quite relaxed

 

But now, on to the pictures  

 

And as the rims got their clear coat as well, I could finally finish the wheels

 

That's it for today. From now on the updates should be on a more regular basis again

Thank you very much for your kind comments, I really appreciate it, especially as I am getting impatient to have this build off the bench.

 

Although I have the impression that not much happened on this build, there is some progress anyway to show you.

 

First of all the diffusor was carbonized

 

Then I tried something new. Instead of making myriad of templates and decals I tried to cover a whole piece with one single carbon decal. In some spots the decal tore apart, but nothing that couldn't be fixed with small patches. I just noticed on the picture, that I still missed two spots which need some fixing. On the front part (upper part in the picture) I had some wrinkling I didn't get rid of, but as this part won't be seen that well in the final build, I can live with that. This part sits right underneath the bonnet and as the bonnets remain closed on my models anyway, I don't care that much about the imperfections. If it would be more visible, I would have some spots more to repair. The parts without carbon decals will be brush painted black after the clear went on.

 

In order to have something that can be hidden underneath the part mentioned above, I also finished the engine compartment.

 

After that the dashboard was painted and the parts from the PE set have been attached.

 

And finally I wet sanded and polished the doors in between the other work, so they are now finished and waiting for final assembly.

 

That's it for this update. At the end of the week should be another clear coat day and after that I'll only have to finish sanding and polishing of the remaining body parts before I can start final assembly of this build

A real nice progress.  You did a good job with the  carbonfibre decals. 

Looking forward for the next steps,  and I'm sure, at the end,  we will see another great model.

Great carbon work. Yep I also did that engine bay piece in a single go.yep also had to do some repairs!😄. Dash is looking good. I've just finished the engine bay and am slowly starting on the interior. You're steaming ahead of me on this one!

Not much really visible done this week, as it was more or less only sanding / polishing the clear I applied a few weeks ago and apply clear to parts I always forgot to clear coat in the first two occasions... 🙄

 

First of all the wheels could be completed. I had to wait, because the calipers were amongst the parts I always forgot to clear coat. I think It would have been better I had done something different than modelling yesterday, as it just wasn't my day.... So I was not too surprised when I looked at the picture today and saw that the front calipers are installed quite skew...

 

The part covering the engine bay has been clear coated matte. Now I only have to paint some gloss black (and maybe some metallic) accents to finish this one.

 

And finally I sanded, polished and assembled the engine hood. While sanding with 6000 grit I suddenly noticed some kind of bulge (you can see it in the lower right part in the picture). As I usually see the paint getting thinner and disappear eventually when sanding, I was kind of puzzled, what this was and sanded very careful over this spot with the finer grades. While polishing, the part suddenly started to feel soggy. That's when I realized that it wasn't only the paint, but the whole part had broken... Somehow this particular part made problems from start to end. Fortunately I could stabilize it by attaching it to the lower (black) part. This also made it less obvious, so I'll leave it that way. If it will disturb me too much once finished, I'll think of something I could lay over it (like for example a baseball cap somebody put there).

 

That's it for this week. I hope that I'll find some time over Christmas to sand and polish the body (and hopefully without breaking anything...). As soon as the sanding and polishing will be finished, there is more or less only assembly work to do, as all the subassemblies are finished or almost finished.

That's a shame about it breaking, but judging by the photo it's barely visible even on the camera (and that means I expect it's virtually invisible to the naked eye). I had a similar thing happen with my VW van and made a much worse job of repairing it than you've done and now I've almost forgotten about it. Being at the back of the model, you've got the same advantage that I had in that it will be facing away from any viewers so is less of an issue than if you'd broken the bonnet.

Yes, that's one advantage of the bonnet being in the back of the car  But if I wanted to take it to an exhibition, the car could be looked at from top, so it would be as visible as if it was in front 😉 "Fortunately" there was also another mishap with the paint, so I don't think I'll ever take it to an exhibition...

Thank you 🙂 It's on the right side, down from the lower black tip, a very fine vertical, whitish line.

 

During the holidays I took some time to wet sand the body. First I started with 2000 grit to get an even surface. After 3.5 hours of sanding the body looked nice and even

 

After that I continued wet sanding with 3000 / 4000 / 6000 / 8000 und 10000 grit to bring back the shine (best visible in the large horizontal area in the front of the car)

 

Once that was done, I polished it with Zero Paints' polish compounds and finished it all with applying Tamiya Model Wax all over it. Then I only had to bring together the prebuilt subassemblies. So it was time today for the marriage

 

And right after the wedding ceremony it was time for some pictures in the fotobox. Here you can see that I struggled applying the green paint. Even if the body and the doors had been painted at the same time with the same amount of layers, the green on the doors has another, yellowish tint... 😞

That colour difference is strange - but it doesn't really detract from a very nice model Lambo....!! Does it show up more in photos than real life?

I have the impression that it shows up more in real life than on the pictures. But meanwhile I seem to have get used to it, I'm already taking this model into consideration to take it with me for the next exhibition taking place in october...

 

On facebook, one answered that it could have to do with the direction in which the parts have been painted AND stored to let them dry. According to him this could have happened if I let the body dry the way it is supposed to (the side panels in a vertical position) and the doos lying on something so that the surface would be horizontal. The doors haven't been held horizontally to let them dry, but they were held upwards, in an 90 degrees angle from their usual position. I don't know if this could have caused this issue as well, but I think it's something to keep in mind for the future builds

Hmm, I haven't come across that theory before about the direction parts are stored (presumably while curing) affecting the colour. That at least gives me an excuse for some of the terrible matches I have with TS-53!

 

As for the colour difference on yours, I can only see it in one or two photos so it looks as though it's something which only appears at certain angles anyway. (And is a very minor difference anyway).
