1/48 Eduard Tempest Mk. II

Well it's been a terrible year for my group builds. I must have built 10 last year and so far zero completed this year. But having just cleared out my model cabinets having sold most of my builds, and having a break between courses I thought I'd start on this.

Some nice looking plastic.

And of course the Profipack PE and masks.

And the suitably deserty scheme.

I actually just sold most of my collection to a Pakistani man so it's kind of fitting too!

Welcome to the GB Arthur, and with a very fine choice too.

The Tempest Mk.II is a great looking aircraft and the desert camo just makes it even better, and the Pakistani roundels do look very good on it. I am sure the guy you sold your other models too will be very happy to take this one off your hands when you have finished it.

Looking forward to this one.

I made a start and spent a lot of time on the cockpit, using all the PE! Even the really tiny stuff. While it is practically invisible, it's also good practice for when I get around to doing one of those really mentally detailed ships with loads of PE.

Then I  buttoned up the fuselage. The kit really goes together amazingly, but i did break some of the frames of the cockpit tub while removing them and they were also a little broken to start off with. I didn't scratch any repairs to the missing sections because I thought it should not really be visible. Boy was I right. Can hardly see any of my hard work! 😐

And now got the wings on. Really lovely kit to work on. Not a fast build but certainly very rewarding and something to become absorbed in. The details are incredible.

Hopefully I can get some more work done on this this week.

Thanks everyone for the kind comments! Certainly it feels great to be back on the builds!

I made a bit more progress tonight.

Unfortunately my next online uni course starts tomorrow which is gonna cut down on the building time available but I just need to keep doing little bit here and there I think because the kit falls together with a little bit of tidy up work and dry fitting. You know the fit is good when you cannot see where to apply extra thin cement because the join literally looks like the other panel lines!

Unfortunately I didn't get the photoetch vents in front of the cockpit perfect. It was challenging and unfortunately called for the destruction of the plastic equivalent part so there wasn't even a back-up option! But being keen to improve my PE skills I took the plunge. It will be ok when done but it's not perfectly round nor flush.

At this pace you could still finish 10 builds this year! 🤣

Sounds like the perfect kit!

Enjoy the rest of the build Arthur, even if uni slows the pace a bit. Will follow with interest.👍

Well I have definitely been neglecting my studies but at least I'm ready for paint shop! No real issues I would say. All parts are off the sprues and ready for paint.

One confusion I have is the fuel tanks and their pylons as they are moulded in clear. The instructions are actually not very clear but it looks  like the tanks should be painted grey or silver and the pylons should be left clear? Any help would be appreciated.

It looks lovely Arthur. You have convinced me to buy one.

Looking at the Pakistani Tempests, they may not have the clear section. For example:

https://pdf.defence.pk/media/d-jpg.18470/

There are a number of images all with drop tanks without the clear section. Not saying that there is not an image of your chosen subject with the clear section, just not seen it yet.

Certainly the early Tempest drop tanks of this type did have. Here are some images of Tempest drop tanks with the clear section:

Tempest Drop Tanks 1

Tempest Drop Tanks 2

And a variation. Obviously clear at the rear.

Tempest Drop Tanks 3

Nice to see Eduard provided clear parts so you can duplicate the clear section. However, if not required, it should make the masking a little easier.

Very nice looking Tempest!

Did some of the sprues appear greasy? My two Mk5 had a couple of sprues that looked like they had a dip in an oil vat....

Thanks Christer. No mine look ok but I’ll be sure to give it a good alcohol rub down before painting just to be sure!

Thanks for that Ray! Yes it will make it easier. I can understand the clear construction now much better from your pictures !

I bet you all thought that I wouldn't finish this!

And you're probably still right but I cranked up the old airbrush today and got some primer and the bottom colour on! Yay!

The kids and wife were playing in the backyard, which also happens to be my spraybooth, so instead of lacquer primer and thinners I used mig one shot and mr hobby acrysion thinner for the paint. The primer actually went on OK, but you really have to do thin coats otherwise it can flood and run easily.

I picked Tamiya light blue for the bottom, because:

A. I already had it in the paint cabinet

B. I personally don't like the "richness" of azure blue paired with the desert colours

C. Eduard mentions in the instructions that no one is really sure of the colours of this aircraft.

D. I think the washed out light blue will look great.

I will let this cure over night because I know this primer and paint is not going to be as resilient to masking as my usual lacquer types. Inshallah I can get the desert colours on tomorrow!

Very pleased to see this back underway Arthur, and looking very good too.

The primer and panel shading have worked well and the undersides look really good. While azure blue is very likely the colour used it is quite possible that another colour was used and proving it either way could be tricky, the colour you have used does look very good, especially with the variations in shading.

I managed to get the camo on today and I'm pretty happy with it. I also painted everything else but of course needed to forget something.

Of course, the yellow leading edges of the wings. 😐

The primer and blue paint held up to the masking pretty well, but I would not want to leave it masked for a long time.

I also gloss coated with gunze acrylic gloss mixed with acrysion thinner but it didn't go very glossy. I'm considering giving it a lacquer gloss coat for protection during weathering, but I should probably wait a week for curing to ensure no funny business with the acrysion thinner. so I'm sure I'll put decals on this week as I think the finish is good enough for that.

I assume these decals are the peelable type so I'm sort of looking forward to seeing how they work.
