VW Beetle Barn Find - Improved, and new pics

Recommended Posts

Last week I randomly came across a Youtube video about this very subject. I thought it would be cool to have one in the cabinet, next to a really shiny one I built a while back.

As luck would have it, this weekend was Blitz Build weekend so I grabbed this kit

and went to work on it. I knew this is a great kit and would go together quickly.

It was built over the past two days, if you're not familiar with the "Blitz Build" concept check here in the Group Build area. Three times a year the merry band gets together and tries to build something in a maximum of 24 hours. Which is not easy considering the amount of banter you have to deal with.

Anyway, it's good fun.

The build is here.

This is a pic from when the little VW was just about to become barn find material.

And here it is, freshly found.

Edit: I improved the look, it was too shiny still, and not dusty enough. So, I did some more work to it (more paint, and a flat coat) and made new pics. Hope you like them!

To better show the difference with the current state it's in, this was my first attempt, somewhat rushed by the nature of the Blitz Build, of course.

There's just not enough dust on it, and I sprayed it too dark as well. Also, I had hoped that the paint I did spray would take off the shine but it didn't. And I didn't flat coat it either which became quite apparent under the photo lamps. So what I did was use lighter shades of dust, mainly very light gray. This gives a better dust look. There's more on the horizontal surfaces than on the verticals. I then sprayed Windsor and Newton's matt varnish which is truly excellent stuff. Lastly I applied some fresh bird droppings 🙂

And now it looks like this.

Hey Jereon! That's a masterpiece.

If  you will tone down with matt clear it will look like a total forgotten original.

Great idea and as usual from you a great model

You forgot to add the spider webs :poke:  Love it!

If anyone likes to see barn finds, check out the late brake show with Jonny Smith on the tube.

Great build, but matt lack would give the final touch. That's just my opinion.

I had hoped the spray of dust would tone down the shine but it didn't quite make it. It's better in real light but the photo lamps are very bright and strong. I'll spray a matt coat later this week, it should indeed improve.

That looks great, especially considering the time constraint to build it.  What it deserves now is a suitable setting (an old barn, maybe?😉) in which to place it.

  • JeroenS changed the title to VW Beetle Barn Find - Improved, and new pics

By popular demand, I went back and improved the look with some other colours and a matt coat. I think it's better now. Thanks @Marco F. and @Jouko for sharing your opinions.

Obviously, it needs a proper barn to sit in... maybe someday...

Oh,  fantastic outcome. The matt tone make the barnfind effect perfect.

And the smiley and the "Hoi" script  are sweet little details to catch everybodies attention.  Spot on

Congratulations  Jeroen

Great job, the matt really make a hugh difference ‐ Andy

Thanks Andy, there's some extra paint on there as well, light grey-ish to simulate the barn dust better. Then on top of that windsor and newton, it's dead flat.

Shame on me Jereon,  I didn't realised the additional paint....blame my Handy...too small for my old eyes 😇

But with every sight I love your "kever" more and more

I know the problem 😉

Anyway, it was very hard to see the difference, so I dug up a pic from version 1.0 and inserted it into the post, and elaborated some more on the extra work I did. It makes more sense now.
