81-er Posted August 24, 2023 Posted August 24, 2023 My main build for this Blitz is the Revell Me P1099, only issued once in this version, all the way back in 1996: Parts all still on their sprues: As I mentioned in the chat thread, this aircraft was only ever intended to be a two-seater, but this version is a single-seat with a big empty gap in the back. I’d originally intended to 3d print some better seats and some detail for the rear of the cockpit, but I found a pair of Quickboost resin Bf-109 seats and some leftover PE from my F-5 build in the spares box, which is probably good enough for the rear of the cockpit as I doubt much will be seen back there once the canopy is on: All I’m actually going to print now is a wedge-shaped block to sit between the seats for a bit of support. As I’m building two kits (have a look at my Mustang thread for the 2nd), I’ll take advantage of the rule allowing us to take the main bits off the sprues in advance, ready to get cracking on Saturday. JOCKNEY Posted August 24, 2023 Posted August 24, 2023 Great stuff James I've always been a fan of Luft46 stuff so this is right up my street. Is this a candidate for mottling, or do you have something more dramatic planned ? Cheers Pat 2
81-er Posted August 25, 2023 Author Posted August 25, 2023 I had a feeling you'd like this one, Pat Potentially, if I feel brave (I've consciously avoided it until now). The plan is to take inspiration from late Bf-109's and FW-190's, so the brown & green variations of RLM 81 over the yellow late version of RLM 76. James 2
Enzo the Magnificent Posted August 25, 2023 Posted August 25, 2023 I have built one of these and have another in The Stash. It's a very nice kit. 1
81-er Posted August 25, 2023 Author Posted August 25, 2023 That's good to know, it certainly looks it. I've got heavy armour version in the stash as well, for another day. I'm rather keen on the Revell Luft 46 kits they issued in the mid/late 90's. As well as the the two version of the P1099 I've got a Horton Ho 229, four Blohm & Voss P-194's (one started that I really will finish soon), and another four Arado Ar-555's to go with the one I've already built James 2
81-er Posted August 26, 2023 Author Posted August 26, 2023 Time for the first update while I’ve stopped for lunch. As Messerschmitt was a big German industrial firm, I’m going to soundtrack this build with German industrial music, starting with the most well known, Rammstein. This one might be familiar to anyone who’s seen the Vin Diesel movie XXX (no, not that kind of XXX movie), as the opening scene features the band playing the song. As my mate who was a cinema projectionist at the time said, there’s obviously not that much fire at their gigs. And as I answered him, no there isn’t, there’s much, much more Starting the clock this morning, to show where I started from: Stopping it while I turned my attention to the Mustang: I’d got a whole load of stuff ready for primer: I’d tarted up the cockpit. I’m probably the only one mad enough to use PE during a Blitzbuild: It’s not perfect, but it’ll do as almost none of it will be seen. I’ve also opened up the ejector shoots and backed them with some offcuts of plasticard: I restarted the clock before I began the priming, with this being the elapsed time after that was done: And primed bits drying off: The next job will be getting some RLM 66 on the interior bits. 81-er Posted August 26, 2023 Author Posted August 26, 2023 I thought you might appreciate that one, mate. A few more might tickle your fancy too Music for this update is supplied by Lord of the Lost, who represented Germany in Eurovision this year. That made me smile as I’m a long-time fan of the band. This one’s a favourite of mine from rather further back in their catalogue: After lunch, it was time to get some base colours on things. I’m not going to repeat a load of photos of the start of a timer, just assume it’s restarted from the last time with each update. So, here’s the elapsed time after the airbrushing session: A lot of RLM 66 was sprayed: Plus some aluminium on the intakes, jet exhaust on the rear engine parts, and rubber black on the tyres: I had a break while that lot dried and dealt with some domestic tasks (the downside of living alone, everything is your responsibility), then came back to do some detail painting. Elapsed time: And some detail shots. Not my most amazing work, but should look ok after a wash under the canopy: James 7
81-er Posted August 26, 2023 Author Posted August 26, 2023 Music for this update is from Megaherz: Before I got back to this, dinner was sorted. Garlic, herb, and lemon Basa with Romanesco sauce and spinach, very, very tasty: I got busy with finishing the detail painting of the belts, then it was time for a dry brush and wash over everything, followed by getting the cockpit all assembled. Elapsed time: And photos: I’m rather pleased with how that’s come out. I was hoping to get the fuselage closed up today, but I think that’ll be the first job tomorrow now. I forgot to mention earlier, but the canopy has had a dip in Aqua Gloss as it wasn’t all that clear. It is now! James 9
AdrianMF Posted August 27, 2023 Posted August 27, 2023 Nice cockpit. The crew are going to need long arms to reach all those buttons! Regards, Adrian 1
81-er Posted August 27, 2023 Author Posted August 27, 2023 Well, I kind figure it's not all mission-critical stuff. The ones further out of reach probably do things like purge the chemical toilet, heat up the bratwurst & sauerkraut for lunch, and swap the radio from Goebbbels propaganda to the BBC World Service James 2
81-er Posted August 27, 2023 Author Posted August 27, 2023 Another bit of work down on this, updating while I stop for lunch. Music this time around is from Die Krupps Elapsed time: I got some weight in the front. The instructions say 9g in the nose, I’ve got 15g behind the cockpit. I’ll see if I can get some more in alongside the cockpit tub before I glue the nose gear bay in: I’ve got the fuselage closed up and I’m starting to sort the seams. I’ve also joined the top & bottom sections of the wings, assembled one engine, and done some work on the nose gear bay: Speaking of the bay, that’s been glued to the outer panel, and I’ve added a but of extra detailing from strip. If I remember, I’ll drill out the gun barrels too: There were three raised rings on the spine to represent filler caps, which will be lost in the seam filling. I’m debating between rescribing them or using some PE caps I have. I guess I’ll see how I feel when the seams are dealt with. James 6
81-er Posted August 27, 2023 Author Posted August 27, 2023 Another big chunk of work on this to report. I’ll soundtrack this one with Erdling, a band I only discovered a couple of months ago, but are very much up my street: Elapsed time: Both engines are now together and ready to attach to the wings. The rear parts go on after that: I’ve replaced the pitot with some brass tube: Every part that remained on the sprues has now been readied for paint: The fuselage seams are sorted, the nose gear bay is in place, the spine tank caps replaced with PE, and the canopy attached. So I went to spray the RLM 66 on the canopy frames, only to realise as the paint hit it that I’d forgotten to mask the canopy 🤦♂️ Thankfully I’d previously dipped it, so I hit the paint with some IPA (in hindsight maybe not the best thing to have used), which got it off, but has left a white residue. I’m assuming that’s from it reacting with the Aqua Gloss, as it does seem like it’ll wipe off. That suggested it was a good time to stop for food, and I treated myself to a takeaway. Nasi Goreng (Indonesian-style fried rice dish) and some goyza on the side: I’m very fortunate to have a local Asian takeaway that doesn’t Westernise the food, so this was both very, very tasty and hot as hell (which is a good thing in my books). Definitely not one for someone who thinks a Tikka Masala is a bit spicy 🤣 James 7
jackroadkill Posted August 27, 2023 Posted August 27, 2023 Hello there! This is coming on very well indeed. 1
81-er Posted August 27, 2023 Author Posted August 27, 2023 Cheers mate Final update for today, and things are looking more positive than where I last left off. So, an upbeat bit of music in the form of KMFDM (who are very much on my bucket list to get to see) Elapsed time: The first mission was to sort the canopy. I gave it a really good going over with IPA, drying it off with kitchen roll in between, and that got rid of the residue. I then gave it a spray of Aqua Gloss to protect it and bring back some of the clarity: It’s actually a lot clearer in reality than that photo. Not as good as it was before my mistake, but better than it came out of the kit box still. Good enough that I can see the control stick’s gone missing. God knows where it is, but it was in there before the canopy went on. I’m not taking the canopy off to find it though. The next job was to mask the canopy to avoid a repeat of my cock-up: That then got a coat of RLM 66, followed by some filling to the gaps that revealed when it was dry: I’d also hit a few of the other seams to check them at the same time, so some Mr Surfacer 500 was bunged on those: Not photographed, but I’ve primed all of the miscellaneous parts now, so the list of parts needing primer is down to just the main airframe when it’s assembled. The engine intakes have been masked, the exhausts will have to wait until the engines are fitted to the wings, which I’m not planning to do until the wings are on: I think that’s probably me done at the bench for today. James 5
81-er Posted August 28, 2023 Author Posted August 28, 2023 First update for today, with music from Eisbrecher (icebreaker in English), who have a tie in with Megaherz from earlier in the thread as Eisbrecher’s vocalist was the original vocalist in Megaherz Elapsed time: The airframe is together, but there’s some gaps and steps around the engines that are taking time to sort: Spectacularly rubbish photo, but I’ve masked & sprayed the wheel hubs matt black, and got the lower surface colour (the late-war yellowy RLM 76) on the outside of the gear doors. I’ll mask that when it’s dry ready for the RLM 02 to the insides: Realistically this one isn’t going to get done today, lesson learnt that I’ll stick to one build, and make it an easier one next time. I’ll keep soldiering on and see just how far I can get today. James 3
81-er Posted August 28, 2023 Author Posted August 28, 2023 Quick update while I stop for lunch, and some Oomph! Elapsed time: After tackling the filler on the seams, I gave it a coat of primer. I knew there were still areas needing work, bit I wanted a better idea of just how much: As expected, there’s a few areas where there’s more work required than I originally thought, but overall it’s not as bad as I was expecting. James 5
81-er Posted August 28, 2023 Author Posted August 28, 2023 Sadly not, Pat. I realised I'd got to that point where I could get it done by the deadline, or I could do it right. After all the effort I've put into now I'd rather not stuff it up at the last fence, so I'll get it polished off without the rush of the Blitzbuild James 2
Mig Eater Posted August 28, 2023 Posted August 28, 2023 It's such a rare kit it's worth taking your time & getting it right.
Marklo Posted September 3, 2023 Posted September 3, 2023 Nice build. Pity it didn’t make the deadline but I’m assuming your going to finish it. I also can’t big help notice we have a substantial overlap in our music tastes I love lord of the lost ( so sad to see them crash dnd burn in the Eurovision ), Eisbrecher and Megaherz ( and of course Rammstein) I kind of like Oomph too but they sound a bit too like a Rammstein tribute band On a semi related note one of the main reasons I’ve been getting behind on my GB commits is that I’ve gone back to music and have just finished off and released my first EP and am working on an album… 1
81-er Posted September 4, 2023 Author Posted September 4, 2023 Yes, this one will definitely be finished soon, Mark, never fear I thought you'd like a lot of the music as well. I've also started dabbling with music again, after not touching my guitars for 2.5 years. I'd like to be making some industrial music, but so far all I seem to be cranking out is melodic thrash. You'll have to PM me about your EP, I'd like to hear that James
Marklo Posted September 4, 2023 Posted September 4, 2023 (edited) I reckon if it’s ok to post a YouTube link than a Spotify one is ok too. Plus it might garner a few streams . Just my MC101 times two my four guitars and me singing ( I wanted Morristown crossed with Hugh Corwell, I think I got Ian Curtiss crossed with Andrew Eldrich, but it’s growing on me ) I was trying to go Dawless but I caved in and started using Reaper and TBH I haven’t looked back. I’m big into industrial too, I think I have tinges but I’m not sure what genre it is. I’m working on the basis that so long as I like the sound I’ll just run with it. i have another four tracks I’m working on. Edited September 4, 2023 by Marklo 1
