Go Large in the Desert - A Desert Fury - Finished. Finally!!

As this year has been a bumper choice from the chosen GBs (my votes all came in, in the bunfight), I thought it time to choose something for the Deserted GB.  This is it:

Far too long in the stash, so it’s time to just build it!  Usual sprue shots:

It would appear I started applying a bit of colour at some point in the past, but that’s as far as it got!!  Decals look good (and colourful)

Now it’s time to choose a scheme:

Looks like it’s a choice between Iraq and Pakistan, as the Egyptian scheme hardly meets the brief.

Welcome to the GB @psdavidson, and with a fantastic choice that I am sure will be popular.

The Fury/Sea Fury is real beast of plane and in my opinion looks best in the desert scheme.

Both the Iraqi and Pakistani schemes are really good and although the Egyptian scheme in the instructions in NMF I believe that their aircraft, or at least some of them, received desert camouflage

Very much looking forward to this coming together.

The Egyptians only had one Fury, which was on a sales tour when the first conflict with Israel broke out.  It was commandeered.  I haven't heard of it ever getting a desert scheme, but with no spres I rather doubt it lasted long enough.

My mistake Graham, don't know what dark and dingy recesses of what passes for my mind I dragged that spurious info from!

Very nice, Roland! I really like the Typhoon/Tempest/Fury family. An Iraqi Fury is very much on my build list, and I have both the Special Hobby Hi-tech Tempest II in 1/32 and an Eduard Tempest II in 1/48 that will be getting Pakistani paint jobs. The Eduard one was my build for this GB until I found that weird Wellington.

I'll enjoy watching this one being built :)

For me it would have to be the PAF aircraft, on account of that big red spinner!

I like the big red spinner too, but then I’ve also got the Special Hobby version and I don’t fancy doing the NMF Indian Air Force version, so that will probably be the PAF version. Which means this one is likely to be Iraqi.  Then again, we’ll see how the build goes, long way to decal application!!

Nothing wrong with that, I have always liked the Iraqi markings as they are quite different to most air forces ones.

Hadn’t thought about it that way, but yes, triangular “roundels” are quite rare. I can only think of 1950s Iraq, Botswana and Burma off the top of my head. Are there any others?

Been a bit distracted with the Go Large GB so have neglected this GB, but with work progressing slowly, I thought I’d start some of the easy bits on the Fury.

For a large scale kit, the detail is very basic in the cockpit.  Sadly any of the aftermarket sets have long since sold out, so I’m just going to have to see what I can do to add a bit of colour - similar to what I’ve had to do in the other GB.  Here is the cockpit

One of the simple updates, will be to add some seatbelts; work in progress

Good to see your Fury underway and the cockpit is coming on nicely, you are doing a good job on the seatbelts, very tricky work.

Indeed it is very tricky!  Got a top tip to build as many parts as possible whilst still attached to the photo-etch sprue, and there’s no doubt it does make things easier.

Whilst I’m waiting for the seat belt parts to dry, I thought I’d start looking at the major parts of the kit.  Got to decide whether to rivet the otherwise bland exterior as (perhaps foolishly) I’ve started to do on my Beaufighter.

Then I realised I may have a bigger problem!  The Grand Canyon scale panel lines!

Not quite sure what to do here. Filling and rescribing, as well as riveting, is just going to delay things significantly.  Perhaps multiple layers of Halfords primer? But I’ll need to do that before any riveting, or they will disappear first.  Any top tips?

fantastic tip, just what I needed👍

My mark 1 eyeballs are getting worse, maybe this way I can produce decent seat belts...

Just to prove that I haven’t forgotten about the Desert GB, I thought I ought to do a little work in my desert Fury.  Not much progress as I’m trying to meet the deadline in the Go Large GB, but some progress.

Wings together (still haven’t decided what to do about the Grand Canyon panel lines).

You can also see the frustratingly slow progress on the seat belts.

Decided not to go overboard on the riveting (because of the time taken in my Beau), but have added a bit, just to add something.

Job for today - get the seat finished so I can close up the fuselage!

Well after a change of job and sorting some other issues, plus the distraction of trying to complete the Go Large or Go Home GB (even with its extended deadline), I’m pleased to say I’ve not forgotten about my desert Fury.

Finally, got the seat belts finished and installed! That was a bit of an epic!!  Not that much of the cockpit detail is going to be visible!!  🤷🏻‍♂️

That’s allowed me to start closing up the fuselage.  Just to prove there is still a little bit of progress, here we go:

With only 13 days to the deadline, it’s going to be tight 😳

Nice to see this one underway again :) No need to stress, Craig got an extension, so this GB is running for the rest of the year now
