Hi JB,

I have always wanted to build a submarine.

How long is this U Boot in 1/144 scale?

I will definitely follow.

Cheers.

This is going to be an interesting one.

Looking at the box art, that is not a large vessel.   It's quite scary that men went to sea in them.

134ft long, so just under a foot/300mm in 1/144 scale.

A type VII (the most common one) was 220ft long, so 1 ft 6in/450mm in 1/144 scale. Not actually that much bigger in absolute terms, but when you allow for the streamlined outer casing, ballast tanks, and the space needed for torpedoes, engines, power and equipment, there was probably more than double the living space on the bigger ones.

Brilliant choice, submarines are rare enough in any group build let alone a blitzbuild.

Really looking forward to following this one.

Which hull # will you go with ?

I am going with U-20, the box art scheme. I chose this scheme because of the logo on the front of the conning tower.

As I am on call for work, I will be building this over the three days, using the great escape option. Plan is to construct today and paint tomorrow and Monday.

I had hoped to have started by now, but work has already intervened!

Made a start just after midday.

Initial progress was quick, after 40 minutes I had the hull and conning tower assembled.

Lunch called, nothing exciting just a cup-a-soup.

Returned to the bench an hour later.

Progess was slow, lots of small fragile parts. Already broken a barrel on one of the deck guns trying to remove it from the sprue.

The conning tower is dry fitted in the photo.

I have since primed the main parts. Calling it a day, off to watch the vuelta a españa team time trial.

Nice build but it keeps making my think of U1206 the sub that was sunk because the captain didn’t know how to operate the toilet…

Spent 4 hours at the bench this morning. Got the main painting done, using that indispensable tool, the hair dryer.

Off to watch the F1 and cycling. Aim to pick this up this evening.

The final push. I did a cheeky hour after dinner yesterday comprising a gloss coat and a light wash.

This morning it was decals, adding the small fragile bits and a final matt coat.

Calling this one done. Just over 12 hours spread over the three days.

An enjoyable build, lost a couple of the smaller parts to the carpet monster, but happy with the way it turned out.

Great job !!!

Nice to see sombody build  one of the lesser known subs.

( I myself have gotten stuck in a rut by building 11 of the Type VII subs.)
