Everyday Decay

As I just said in the chat thread, I have decided to give this GB a try. My idea is to build a vignette showing some everyday stuff, like bicycles and household appliances, that have been left outside to slowly decay away. Maybe against a background of an ill maintained wall. And with weeds all around. We'll see how well I'll succeed.

 

Anyway, here are some inspirational photos:

 

 

 

So far, I have acquired some kits to get me started.

 

I will not be using the figures, just their bikes. 🙂 I got he soldiers, although I did not need them, since I could not locate any other bike kits in a suitable scale.

 

Now I shall just muster courage enough to actually get going.

A caravan! Yes that would be cool, but this was supposed to be a small build so …

may be some other time since I like the idea of a caravan.

I started the build by assembling the bicycles. It turned out that the actual bicycles where identical in the two different "Soldier-with-Bicycle" kits I had bought. The two kits where the same, except for the figures themselves. What otherwise differed between the kits was which gear you were supposed to load onto the bike. This is what the bike parts of the kits both looked like.

 

 

I just wanted the generic bike parts and not any of the military gear. I also did not use the more archaic looking parts, like the old style hand-brake handle, since I wanted the bikes to pass as a little more modern items, matching the washing machine and the refrigerators.

 

This was not a very easy build (for me at least 🙂), since many parts were very small and fragile, having a tendency to break. Resulting in some not very nice looking attempts at mending. 

 

I made one of the bikes more or less intact looking while the other one has been somewhat cannibalized and wrecked  Here are the two bikes after assembly.

Yes, that would certainly be appropriate! But the tires are so thin so I am afraid that would be really hard to pull off in a convincing way. And also, I plan to have a lot of weeds growing around the bikes so I don't think you would have seen any of it anyway.

Thanks! Yes, the whole build was quite tricky. But the chain more or less bent itself, so that part was not that hard. It was harder to keep things supposed to be straight from not bending. 😛

I continued working on the bikes. First a general layer of rust colors.

 

 

And then the various parts were brush painted:

- An aluminum color on all the bare metal and chrome parts.

- Remnants of the original frame color

- Black and grey on the tires, saddle and handles.

Last, it was all brought together with a light rust wash and some weathering powders.

 

 

I'll leave it at that, at least for the time being, and turn my attention to the refrigerator and the washing machine.

Attention turned the appliances: a refrigerator and a washing machine. The kits I bought for these are 3D printed and do not contain very many parts, but are well executed and contain a surprising amount of details. Here are the parts (except for the glas part of the washing machine hatch), after priming:

 

 

And here they have been assembled and given a basic coat of white paint.

 

 

Even the inside of the washing machine and the back of the fridge are modelled!

 

 

Time to raise the entropy by adding some rust and grime. Perhaps I overdid it? At least the grime in the fridge. And also, the camera is always unforgiving in close up photos like this. I might revisit the fridge at a later stage. What do you say?

Pay attention to washing typewriter. Control panel and round hatch made from a plastic. 🙂
