Bless my soul it’s a Fairey Firefly in 1/48 by Trumpeter RFI @ Last!!!

Recommended Posts

Good morning and welcome to the RFI of my
Fairey Firefly 1/48

by Trumpeter

I finished the build a while ago but the weather has been so awful I couldn’t take pics.  We had a lovely sunny day yesterday so decided to catch up on some RFIs I had outstanding.
The Trumpeter kit has some real hate but overall I think it’s a great kit. If you’re willing to put in a little time and effort (That's what it’s all about right❤️) you can get a nice result.

For this build I build and 3D printed some cockpit walls, wheels, nose vents, intake covers and cannons. I think that was it? 🤔 Scratch built some new flaps the dog ate from plasticard and fixed the rest with Sanding, painting and care. The decals were mostly from the kit but the roundels were changed as the colours were a bit off.
The WIP thread is here for those who are curious.

Not loads of pics but at least they’re here.

Hope you like em.

The entire model is so impressive.  What is most impressive though is how well you did with the yellow undercolor in making it work and weather so well.  Hate to paint yellow and always am in awe when someone can do an excellent job on the color.  Thanks for sharing.

That's nice, that is. The yellow certainly makes a very eye-catching scheme - one not seen all that often.

Now that's a nice Firefly, lov3 the paint work and the detail.

Well done Johnny.

Thank you. I loved this kit at first sight. I was a bit disappointed ted when I read the reviews but you can get her into shape. 🫶

Thanks. It’s taken a few attempts to get it right. I find a brown pre shade is the key. And no I g a little orange with the yellow helps with the warmth. 🙂

This is a super build, the work that's gone into it is clear.

I hpe that when I get my Special Hobby 1/48th Fireflies (Mk. 1 and Mk. 5) done, they look as good as yours.

A couple of questions if I may;  Despite going throught the WIP, and if I've missed it you may say so ( ! ), the colour scheme you chose represents which theatre of ops? It looks like a desert scheme to me, with a yellow undersides?

And the red patches just to the rear of the wheel wells, what do they signify?

Typically stylish build Johnny.  I’ve sort of exhausted all the compliments I have available in my vocabulary to describe your painting and finishing skills.  I need to find a thesaurus….

Cracking build Johnny, big fan of the Firefly and you've done it a great justice. I often think it looks like a bog spitfire from certain angles!

Cheers

Thanks Neil. 🙌

Spectacular model!

Maybe the photo angle is misleading _ but, did Trumpeter forget the wing dihedral? 🤔

Brilliant finish…

Kind regards,

Joachim

Thanks. The dihedral is there but it’s not super pronounced. Maybe it could have been more but I’m darned if it’s changing now. 😉

Thanks.

as for the scheme.

it says.

” Initially used for trials and had its undersurfaces painted yellow. It later entered squadron service ” also. “ This was amongst the first aircraft to enter front line service with 1770 squadron in 1943 “

As for the red patches I have no idea. They were in my ref so I popped em on. 🙌

Yet another piece of art from you.

Fantastic finish on this one.

Thanks very much for the tip about the brown preshade under the yellow. I'll be pinching that one.

Alistair
