Not sure if this was the best choice for this GB but it is a old classic Japanese kit that was still being kitted into the noughties if not the teens, I'd have been gutted if I'd bought a new kit anytime in the last 20 years & found myself with one of these. :(  I did have plans to use the decals from an Airfix Top Gun Skyhawk but upon delving into the box I figured I'll keep them for a better kit, so this one is going to be utterly OOB, probably in a Marine Skyhawk unit scheme, that of VMA-211 Wake Island Avengers. The decals for this were in the box when I bought it but are from another boxing of this kit so still qualify as OOB to my mind.

The sprue shot.

Small change to the plans outlined above re scheme, the VMA-211 decals were missing a couple of reasonably vital ones & the kits decals national markings were out of register a tad, the red bar was slightly above centre, so i went looking for replacement stars & bars in my H2K kit which will not use the kit decals & discovered that one of the kit schemes was another Marine unit, VMA-311, whose unit symbol is a black & white cat, job done, our previous moggy was a black & white & I still miss him like hell. I've glued the wings & cockpit bits (seat &tub/nose wheel bay) together, tidied up the pilot figure, filed back the cockpit walls re @billn53's build of this same kit & felt quietly pleased with it. :)

Great choice, Steve 🙂

I was re-reading my old WIP and found this post of yours:

” I've one of these I look at occasionally & think I've worked out how I can do the slats , then I rebox it & put it back to sleep.

So, how are you gonna do the slats?

I'm not, did you miss the bit when I said utterly OOB, dropping flaps & slats would be against the spirit of a classic GB like this & that's my story & I'm sticking to it.  :P :D

On another note, the H2K colour call is for Dark Ghost Grey topside colour but this sounds wrong to me, surely Light Gull grey?

Great choice Steve

There's something really evocative about an early boxing of a kit that really makes me want to build it.

This is coming along a treat  :like:

Thanks Pat, it might slow for a bit while I get my Draken sorted, & the Kfir decals finished, they're the priorities just now. :)

A kit that I've built previously, as the MiG19 silhouette Top Gun aircraft, and added to my stash again at IPMS Glos show.

This one to be built as an Israeli A-4N with the exhaust extension.  I thought this was about narrowing the angle that a heat-seeking missile could see the hot engine.

NON,  (having read about the mods made during Yom Kippur) it moves the missile detonation point a few feet back, to where it doesn't damage the tail surfaces.

Something learned from their Super Mystere aircraft.

A while since I reported on this, but I have been tinkering away, quite a lot of touch ups, I completely redid the underside, some Vallejo Insignia White proved very fragile so I stripped it off & went with some Sovereign Insignia White I have, much betterer. :) Humbrol 129 has done well as Light Gull Gray on the uppers & its pretty much ready to put the decals on now before the sticky out bits. The bombies are ready & waiting to take their place. :)

Done over a couple of evening, decals on, U/C fixed, bombies hanging under wings & that everso fragile ifr probe in place, for now. :) some small touch ups on the underside, a satin coat & I think we're done. Next photos in the Gallery. Thanks to @JOCKNEY & @JeroenS for hosting this & all who looked in & left likes & comments along the way. It was a build I quite enjoyed, however, I gave the other one I had to a young chap we know to have a go at. It is very much a kit of 50+ years ago.

Totally missed this one Steve, life getting in the way and all that.

I spied it in the gallery and had to check out your thread, reviewed and all caught up now.

I'll echo Pat's comments, a brilliant result mate! 🏆

Great job, Steve. I remember building this kit when it first came out, that’s how old I am 😆
