Terry1954 Posted December 7, 2024 Author Posted December 7, 2024 Wow, nearly 3 months since I dia anything on this one. I see I even suggested I would finish it ready for Telford, but I didn't say which one On 9/9/2024 at 3:48 PM, giemme said: Wow, excellent details on those struts! Ciao Thank you Giorgio, they should look good under paint I hope. Did I say paint? On 9/9/2024 at 3:50 PM, bigbadbadge said: They do look great with those lovely PE embellishments Terry. Chris Thanks Chris, always a gentleman. On 9/9/2024 at 6:45 PM, Brandy said: he gave the same reply, so I did nothing until he had to say "OK, add some power"! I've largely been pottering in the hobby room and sorting out my latest airbrush set up and fume extraction arrangements. I've also been trying out a second hand Iwata HP SB plus acquired from @tank152 which has turned out to be a superb little airbrush for detail work, some examples of what I did with that here on these WIP 1/72 AFV's. They are both IBG kits and rather nice kits they are too. Happy that I can still use an airbrush after so long........................ I got some time at the bench with the P-51 on Friday, largely assessing where I was at, and preparing everything that is currently ready for paint. A few components cleaned up and ready for primer and paint (yes paint Giorgio!) ..... I'm planning a marathon painting session at the weekend with a number of other projects at the paint stage and intend to use the newly acquired HP SB on some finer parts, in addition to my normal Iwata. A wee bit of construction took place as well when I decided to try and work with the etched brass under fuselage outlet vent, and actually had a go at soldering the thing together: Needs some clean up from flux etc, but seems to fit OK underneath. More soon. Terry 12 1
giemme Posted December 7, 2024 Posted December 7, 2024 The brass vent is a big improvement on the kit part, great job Terry! Do I smell paint? Ciao 4
81-er Posted December 7, 2024 Posted December 7, 2024 Nice to see you back on this one, Terry Great work with the soldering, and those AFV's look superb for 1/72! James 1
perdu Posted December 7, 2024 Posted December 7, 2024 Nice vent Terry, great paint too! ( I never expected to say THAT) 👍 4
Navy Bird Posted December 7, 2024 Posted December 7, 2024 I love photoetch. Repeat. I love photoetch. Just curious, was there a reason for soldering rather than the usual bending? I'm a bender - no, that's not quite right. I'm on a bender. That's it. Cheers, Bill 8
bigbadbadge Posted December 7, 2024 Posted December 7, 2024 Nice soldering Terry, looks great. Love the little Vickers tank too. Great work Chris 1
tank152 Posted December 8, 2024 Posted December 8, 2024 Hi Terry, glad you're enjoying the airbrush, i've often wondered how you're getting on with it. Tim. 1

Ciao Thanks Giorgio. The brass vent does seem to look better. You do indeed small paint, stand by! 21 hours ago, 81-er said: Nice to see you back on this one, Terry Great work with the soldering, and those AFV's look superb for 1/72! Thank you James. I took to soldering a few years back when I dabbled in P4 scale brass and white metal railway stuff, but don't tell anyone about that, sshhhhh! It's called a 9F, one of the greatest British Steam Locomotives, IMHO! 14 hours ago, perdu said: Nice vent Terry, great paint too! Thanks Bill! 14 hours ago, Navy Bird said: I love photoetch. Repeat. The lower face of the scoop (or whatever it is) has a curve in it and the sides also curve slightly in, and brass being a bit springy meant I had to tape and clamp it up in two planes, in order to get the edges to mate correctly. I then thought it would be easier (and stronger) to just run some flux over the joins and dab some solder on. The solder runs in the joins by capillary action, and hey presto. It also has the advantage of being able to be undone (in the event of a mistake) by the application of heat. Tricky stuff, but great when it works. Ask @Heather Kay, she really is the expert! 13 hours ago, bigbadbadge said: Nice soldering Terry, looks great. Love the little Vickers tank too. Thanks Chris. The Vickers is a model by S-Model (you get two in the box) and the Japanese Tankettes are made by IBG. Fantastic little kits. All my grand children love watching me make those! 21 minutes ago, tank152 said: Hi Terry, glad you're enjoying the airbrush, i've often wondered how you're getting on with it. Tim. Hello Tim, and thanks! It's a great airbrush, once I got the hang of using it, and found the sweet spot. I've only used lacquer paint so far and it's worked well. I'm amazed at the fineness of the lines I can spray freehand. Thanks again. Now, time to get everything ready for some airbrushing, today hopefully as the weather is good, and I can vent the hobby room properly. T. 5
perdu Posted December 9, 2024 Posted December 9, 2024 I love the look of those white metal locos but the soldering learning curve would terrify me. Mind you, for that engine I might be tempted if I didnt already have a head (and workshop) full of projects 2
CedB Posted March 2 Posted March 2 Well, I don’t know how I missed this Terry but caught up now. Very impressive detailing. Those internals are superb. Hopefully finished ready for this year’s trip? I might even have my Jug done. Maybe. 1 1

I'm definitely hoping to finish this one for this years trip. Also want to start the B-17. Currently assessing where we are with this and sorting some issues. How time flies! Must look up your Jug thread. Is that a fnarr moment I wonder? T. 1 1

The Spadgent Posted March 2 Posted March 2 Missed the last few post on this Terry. Your metal work is outstanding!!!! 👌🙌👏👏👏👏 Johnny 1
Terry1954 Posted March 3 Author Posted March 3 23 hours ago, The Spadgent said: Missed the last few post on this Terry. Your metal work is outstanding!!!! 👌🙌👏👏👏👏 Johnny Thanks Johnny! I decided I ought really to get a bit of a lick on with this build, given that we are planning a visit later this year to see Jim at the museum. Perhaps I should finish something to take back! A few small jobs to get me back in the groove. Gunsight fitted: I decided to remove the moulded on sway brace details on the wing fuel tanks and use the Eduard etch braces, which worked well (no etch braces in this picture): I fitted the four etched brass sway braces to the underneath of the wing pylons some time ago, but when I got everything out at the weekend to see where I'd got to, three out of four braces had vanished, probably knocked off sometime over the last few weeks A quick re-think and I opted to attempt to scratch build some replacements. Half inch diameter plastic tube matched the diameter of the widest part of the wing tanks, so maybe I could make some braces from that. Onto the cutting jig then ....... And a couple of 1 mm slices off the end of the tube ..... Then after cleaning up a bit, some braces cut from the circle ... They should do nicely I'm planning to drill some very small holes, one on each side of each brace, to allow some small pins to run through onto the tanks, as per the prototype. These are labelled as 'sway brace locking stud' in the picture below, taken from a book that Jim has leant me for the build. And finally, some paint on the props, in the form of yellow tips! These will be masked off ready for the black which will be applied as part of a big batch of black to be applied. More soon hopefully. T. 13
The Spadgent Posted March 3 Posted March 3 Nice bit of proper modeling going on Terry. Lovely stuff indeed. 🙌 1

I can't remember exactly where I got the jig, but here is an example: https://www.jewellerymaker.com/en-gb/product/tube-cutting-jig-with-sizing-gauge/tsgx20/ If you google "Tube Cutting Jig with Sizing Gauge" you should find plenty. Another tool you must have @CedB, although you may already have one of course! T. 3 2
CedB Posted March 7 Posted March 7 Oooh, another tool! Tasty… I'd better check my drawers first though (fnaar). 3
Terry1954 Posted March 13 Author Posted March 13 I had a great day at the Midland Air Museum on Sunday with @Fritag, @CedB, @81-er, @The Spadgent, @perdu and @Tomoshenko and during the morning proceedings we did a video catch up with @giemme. I managed to off load the giant 1/32 Lancaster that had somehow come my way during the 2023 Museum Build meet up. It now has a very worthy owner in the form of Ced. Seen here in Ced's anonymised boot........... Some other "gifting" and kit swapping occured, and I ended up with one of these courtesy of Steve. I think the other one in Ced's boot, was also from Steve. Much appreciated and thanks to Steve! And a quick snap of the gathered gang. Johnny has a similar one with me in it in his Be2 WIP! With all these social goings on, not much time on the Mustang during the last week, but a little progress on the sway braces for the tanks: I plan to insert some small brass pins into the middle of each sway brace, to fit corresponding holes in the lower wing tank pylons. Should help to locate things better. The kit supplied tail wheel was a one piece moulding, and not entirely convincing: So I set about separating the wheel itself, and replacing the support. Cutting the wheel off left some unsightly moulded on plastic in the hub, so the Proxxon Mill Drill was used to "mill out" the hub. This is a relatively big tool for such work, but sorted it in no time. Components ready for reassembly. The white disc was cut using a punch and die set and two were required to semi fill the hub. The parts reassembled (not glued) which show some clean up needed. More on the Mustang soon. T. 9 2
Tomoshenko Posted March 13 Posted March 13 Wheels are looking superb Terry. I thought we managed to get a piccie of Steve (Fritag) smiling 🙂 6
