Hasagawa Draken, 1/72nd, F-13 Wing, 44, Swedish Air Force...OOB

Ha!  So the masking job of the silver underside will be hit and miss.  I will have to re-paint it.  The tape peels it off.  Anyway, I went ahead and used a Medium Sea Grey for the underside.  I am having to thin out the Vallejo Air paints.  I forgot I had to do that.  Clogging, drying...what a chore!

Sorry for the light...or lack thereof...

Dark Grey Blue...

Masks off...

The underside will need a bit more aluminum...

Now, what's left? The nose, some small little bits with the hairy brush, landing gear, decals, some weathering.

I painted the rubber bits last night...

And the decals went on a few minutes.  I noticed on the sheet that I had lots of extra decals and almost panicked until I remembered it is double kit with the Viggen.  I mean, it says it right there!  😄

Striking looking aircraft for sure.

This, I feel, is an impossibility of physics.

So to insure my serenity I will use a piece of stretched sprue and paint it.

It's a bit longer than necessary so it can be held in the grips.  Yellow goes first.

I'll let the decals set up for a few hours and later tonight I will give the aircraft some satin varnish.  Then some Flory Wash to bring out some aspects.

Landing gear. canopy, etc...almost there!

I added the satin varnish last night.  A few minutes ago I brushed on some light grey Flory Wash topside and some Grime underneath.  Once it all gets knocked back the panel line effect will be very nice.  Examples to peruse...

Getting close and looking good!

Thanks Reini.  And here we go...very grateful for the GB extension, btw...couldn't have, wouldn't have, done it without it.

Underside cleaned up.

Topside too.  I forget how much I like Flory Wash until I use it.  Not only does it do what it is supposed to do, but the mildly abrasive quality of the wet clay gives the surface a very nice patina.

Wheels and all that undercarriage stuff went on.  I like the rear training wheels.  Note that I have painted the pitot tube.

And without further ado, I am calling this one 'finished' (and Swedish 😆) Iwill take some better images tomorrow on the tarmac.  What a handsome and iconic aircraft.  I think it might tie with the Mig-21 in my book.

Many thanks to the Mods for extending the deadline, being patient with my laziness and a slight push now and then to keep me going.

What a great result John.  I'm impressed by those who can bring off the blu-tack method: the edges always come out very inconsistent when I do it and I end up going freehand (with the resulting excessively vague edges in 1/72).  The weathering is the icing on the cake.

  • John Masters changed the title to Hasagawa Draken, 1/72nd, F-13 Wing, 44, Swedish Air Force...OOB

In figuring out where to put this aircraft, which shelf, etc...I think I might have to relegate some builds to a bin with styrofoam peanuts.  Not sure.

Or just start another Cold War jet shelf...😄
