Airfix 1/600 HMS Ark Royal + PE + crew - Finished

Recommended Posts

Here's my entry:

9-CCFD120-6234-4-FFC-9372-C758-D676399-F

I bought this for the "In the Navy" GB a couple of years ago, inspired by a build by Frank Spahr, and promptly bottled it in favour of a 1/72 Tiger Moth in RN trainer colours.

As a kid I built a couple of OOB Airfix Destroyers and a Soviet re-pop of the Heller Potemkin (long story), and failed to finish a Heller Santa Maria. As an adult, I have built the "toy" starter sets of the Mary Rose and Cutty Sark as minor distractions.

So this is my first proper ship project. I'm uncomfortable because:

  • it's a ship
  • it's way more complicated than I'm used to
  • it had a complicated through-life modification history
  • everything is tiny at 1/600
  • so-o-o many plastic and PE parts
  • lots of portholes to drill out
  • figures at 1/600? YGBSM!
  • I have clinical photoetchedbrassophobia
  • there seem to be lots of different greys I know nothing about, called stuff like "507C" and "504K" (hang on, isn't one of those an aeroplane?)
  • it's over the size threshold (1ft/304.8mm) at which my models start attracting adverse domestic feedback
  • it needs a sea base (OK, my own choice...)
  • Did I mention PE?

So I think this counts as slam dunk NMCZ. It's not like I'm saying "ah but I normally only spray RLM 74/75 and this is 82/83"...

Remind me why I suggested this GB again? 🙄😬😱

Adrian

More pertinently, I'm not even sure I'll be able to see the figure at this size. My (limited) experience of P/E is some of it is good and some of it is as much use as kitchen foil...looks like you've got the better end of the spectrum there.

Hmm, we will have to see if any themes emerge during the GB!

The figures are a whopping 1.8m/600 = 3mm tall!

Well, you're leading us all with a fine example there, Adrian! Good luck with this one, other than an Airfix Wasa I sort-of cobbled together as a kid I've not tackled a boat either. One day. As for the base, I rather like the way this chap did his, I've got it bookmarked as I'm planning another Ar 555 build in flight over the Atlantic one day...

Sounds nasty. I've managed to avoid it through social distancing. 😁 I've done one of these many years ago, OOB although I tizzied up the planes a little. And yes, I believe 504K isn't a paint colour but an aircraft. I actually like the 1/600 scale. Yes it's small compared to 1/350 but obviously not as tiny as 1/700 - there I've noticed a big difference.

Good luck with this. Regards, Jeff.

Good luck Adrian - I'm sure you'll enjoy it.

I built one when it first came out and was fascinated by all the 'galleries'.  I was easily pleased back then ;)

Now  that would be out of my comfort zone, the PE I could cope with, but the sea base......

Thanks for that James - it's nice to see that you don't have to use silicon sealant and have the house smelling of vinegar for a week!

I had a paddle into using silver foil as sea for my Cutty Sark:

You had me at this. 😂

I have the Airfix Victory in the stash.
Alas not for this GB my dear.

Tagging along for the ride if that’s ok. 🙌

Adrian, good luck with this build. At least you do still have some biplanes to build along with it, and I look forward to seeing how you tackle them! I bought the Vintage re-issue of the Ark Royal just the other week purely for a nostalgia trip. Having opened the box this morning, I know you will enjoy yours!

And some 1/600 PE rigging to go with them🫣. Which fool even suggested this GB in the first place??

I bought a part done 1.350 scale HMS Dreadnaught from one of the guys at my LMC. I thought it would be an easy way of joining in with this ship building malarky. Oh boy, was I ever wrong.

A 1.600 scale Ark Royal with all the trimmings is way more than I could handle. A very brave choice.

Tony.

Seriously?! At that scale I could accept struts - which would be ridiculously fiddly - but rigging... :fraidnot:

You should modify the rules and add "heart peacemaker wearers WON'T be allowed if they didn't have the battery checked beforehand".

What with all these tiny parts, planning to give the carpet monster an indigestion?

Wishing you good luck.

Pat.

LISTER: But why are they painting the color the same color it was before?
RIMMER: They're changing it from Ocean Gray to Military Gray. Something that should've been done a long time ago.
LISTER: Looks exactly the same to me.

RIMMER: No. No, no, no. (pointing at one section of the wall) That's the new Military Grey bit there, and that's the dowdy, old, nasty Ocean Grey bit there... Or is it the other way around?

Sorry, couldn't help myself.

Well, this is getting embarrassing. I've decalled my Draken and set it aside to dry overnight, and found myself sorting out my spare decals instead of starting the next project - this one!

So, without further ado, let's get stuck in and see what "joys" lie ahead...

E68-D06-F4-BA36-4477-BF5-C-7-EBEAC16-BB4

F03-DEFF3-DA51-4-E6-E-AB9-A-ECFBDF00-EAE

Only two sprues...

And now the photoetch, comparing some key components:

5-C394-CDD-64-EB-4-E4-B-B891-CFB2-A433-F

You can see that the photoetch blows the equivalent plastic parts away, although I think the pom-poms are pretty good. And a lot of the PE is adding, not replacing, detail. So most of it should get used. Gulp.

I think a little trial assemble is called for...

I can only say two things:

I gave you a smiley because there isn't a scream emoticon there 😬.

An hour and some later I got to here:

AC4-B4-F49-5-F15-49-D1-9168-206-B003973-

And after the picture the two front guard rails fell off. You will notice one of the back guard rails had already followed Buzz Lightyear "to infinity and beyond".

I was working with two pairs of tweezers, Gators Grip PVA glue and a magnifier and lamp combo. I don't even know if I shouldn't have primed all the pieces first.

I'm also not sure I would even like the result if it was built properly. It looks too flat and flimsy, like it was just mocked up out of thin sheet metal... Some experimenting tomorrow...

I have achieved my goal of getting out of my comfort zone, at least!

🫣 😱

I've tried to restore my mojo by gluing a few "normal" parts together:

2-BA12289-3-D75-4-B81-ADBC-88-ADCAEA7061

This is also the largest/longest kit I have ever built (18 in/45cm seam on the hull).
