With the completion of the Batch 1 Type 42 destroyer, thought I'd jump to a Type 23 Frigate - HMS Westminster before doing a Batch 2 Type 42.

Usual stuff...

Plastic, no waterline here :hmmm:.

Instructions, clear sprue for helicopter, decals and some PE. Unfortunately, there are no railings which is a little disappointing. White Ensign do a set PE but the cost to get it be more than the kit and that wasn't cheap, so no railings :weep:.

'Cos I'll want to put her onto a sea base, not sure if I'll cut the hull down to waterline or make a hole in the base :hmmm:.

I did this as HMS Montrose, but in 1/350.

Nice ship, I envy you doing it in 1/700, too small more me.

A Type 23. Very nice.

Shame about the railings, but Jon's offer above sounds good.

Well, I thought about it and I think the decision is to cut the full hull to a waterline.

The stern and quarterdeck parts were fitted before fitting the main deck making it stronger before 'hacking' it.

After marking the waterline, I started to saw the lower part but that was a bit awkward, so out with the mini drill with its cutting disk and that made short work of proceedings. A mixture of meaty files and course sandpaper reduced the rugged edge to a fine mating surface.

The underside then had a 0.5mm plastic bottom added and the edges cleaned up...looking good.

Well, here I am...

Following the instructions the foredeck parts are cleaned up, built and put in a pot for later painting. The same with the forward structures.

The foremast was a pita to say the least, it definitely tested your dexterity and eyesight. In hindsight, I should've left the top lattice work off as this should be painted black, so now it'll be a little awkward to paint.

Stuart. THAT is an outstanding piece of brass work. I struggled to do my HMS Montrose in 1/350, don't know how you managed that AND stayed sane.

By the by, did the railings arrive safely ?

Thanks for the praise Jon, and yes the railings arrived safely. As for my sanity, I think you need to be a little insane to even think about PE in 1/700 :mental:.

Superb work on the PE there. It's great to see how much these smaller scales are enhanced by sharp photoetch work 👏👏👏

A bit more movement...

20230405-093227.jpg

Dry fitted assemblies for the forward structure.

Midship structure also dry fitted.

Starting to build the helo hanger structure but want to present it with hanger door open as the kit show some nice interior detail, not much can be seen. Question to the collective. What colour would be the interior walls and roof be...white?

Gidday Stuart, I wouldn't know what the correct colour would be for authenticity, but for a model I'd probably go white or off-white to show the detail inside. Regards, Jeff.

My guess would be white, but @Chewbacca would likely know for sure.

Fantastic detail on those shots of the superstructure.

Becoming the Master of 1/700

I doubt that, a long way from being a master of anything but I do try.

Anyways, here is where I'm up to...

20230420-191412.jpg

Hull painted with Colourcoats, black waterline still to do.

20230420-191515.jpg

Structures also painted with Coloutcoats.

20230420-191724.jpg

Painted bits dry fitted, looking good.

Masts and other stuff painted but needing a little more work, then it'll be time for putting things together. 'Till next time..

Pretty good stuff all round there Stuart. Lots of good detail and with Colourcoats paints, all the better.

Great stuff.
