Fine Molds 1/72 Bf 109 V-35

Recommended Posts

This is the Fine Molds Bf 109 V-35A, which was an unarmed, civil-registered 109 used by Daimler Benz as an engine development aircraft. The base kit is the Bf 109F to which I added a G-2 upper & lower cowl, and broader prop. It retained the very narrow supercharger intake (from a Zvezda 109 F kit). Additional air scoops were cut from a Hobby Boss Bf 109 G kit and glued to the forward cowl. The Fine Molds 109 F swinging canopy is far too thick so a replacement center section was made from .015" clear acetate (from a new shirt collar protector). It was cut, scored and bent to shape. Canopy frames are painted clear decal strips. Details include a locking handle and retaining cord & spring made from very thin wire. The entire airframe was riveted with a Rosie The Riveter tool. The only Civil codes I could find were 50+ year old His-Air-Dec decals. Each one had to be trimmed as close as possible to remove the yellowed clear film. They also had to be attached with diluted white glue. The model was painted with Gunze Sangyo acrylics and weathered with oils and Prisma pencils.

Just a great kitbash to create an interesting and rarely seen variant of the 109 family.  Thanks for sharing your scratch building talents and a wonderful finished model.

Thank you all for the kind words. Andy, the script on the prop blade is illegible of reference photos of this plane. I copied something from a 109 in a similar setting. It was done using a light grey Prisma Color pencil to simulate the chalk used on the original. I suspect it describes the condition of the engine.

Thank you all for the kind words. BerndM, mechanics would write comments in chalk on prop blades, in this case probably about the condition of the engine. The script is illegible in the photos available of this plane so I copied something from another test 109.
