DH Sea Vixen FAW.2, XN650, No 892 Sqn, RNAS Yeovilton

Recommended Posts

XN650 served with 892 Sqn aboard HMS Hermes before the unit disembarked to Yeovilton. It was part of the ‘Simon’s Sircus’ Royal Navy aerobatics team in 1968 which according to those who saw them were one of the best ever aerobatics teams.

This is a wonderful kit from Airfix, fitting together really well. It does need quite a bit of nose weight. I built it straight out of the box, including decals, no aftermarket at all, it didn’t need any in my opinion.

Paint is all from spray cans; gloss EDSG and satin/gloss white. Any comments and ideas always welcome!

Thanks for such positive comments gents! It’s definitely a kit worth digging out of your stash, fits together really well.

My only slight issue was that I wanted to add a full weapons load but not sure the shore-based Vixens would have carried live Red Tops. So some artistic licence applied there.

Did the FAA do its share of QRA? Armed Sea Vixens taking turns with the RAF’s Lightnings? Or in the80’s, did the Sea Harriers do QRA at Yeovilton, or was it always just the RAF?

I think it turned out great and it's a very cool looking aircraft.

One tiny thing...on the rescue arrow decal to the radar operators 'cockpit' has lifted on on one corner.  If you hadn't made the macro shot I doubt I'd have noticed, but I did.
