ianBke
HI I have not long been a member of this site, so let me say hello before I start my first build log. I normally make wooden ships, HMS Vanguard 1/72 is almost complete after 3 years. So I thought id try something completely different, The ship models on here are superb and I especially am attracted to those who add detail and are super artists with the brush and airbrush. This kit is overloads with PE (something I have almost no experience of) and plastic parts that the last time I touched was Airfix kits 40 years ago! A bit of a beast in size as well. I am going to be asking a lot of questions and will need your guidance in lots of areas.
ianBke
I have started what for me is the 'easy part' that I know-- creating the hull framework and planking it to form the curves of the hull.. A good laser line and appropriate weights to stop twisting -One terrible loose joint that I had to allow for to keep her straight-I'd hate to have a bent boat . By the way you my spot-- I have just finished making my workshop chair out of a Mk4 Martin Baker ejector seat...
robgizlu
Nice job on the seat - my Mk 2C has to sit in the garage - it's just too big Rob

ianBke
I managed to find a survival pack to get made into the lower cushion and mounted on an old swivel chair base,. Just need to send it to get a rear cushion made. It is a nice manageable size.

ianBke
Just started correcting the bow resin casting. 1. drilled mooring hole 2. started filing out for the sonar sensor 3. drilled the hole for the bugspiere (great sounding name) --- it was extended and rigged for mine sweeping.. ianBke
Well she now looks more like an aircraft carrier hull LOL The next stage is to start adding some PE and other bits then--- re plank it all again !!
ianBke
second planking complete--- now limbering up my sanding arm for some serious sanding filling, sanding, filling, sanding filling-- you get the picture 🤣 So first PE applied only 2,662 to go 😜 Edited April 19, 2023 by ianBke
ianBke
For anyone thinking of making this kit here is what I had left of the materials from 1st and 2nd planking-- The lower is the 1st and upper the second. so enough from either to re-do bits or make mistakes and use more--- I did both and still had this left
ianBke
A light coat of primer to highlight all the imperfections 😬

ianBke
so grey primer rubbed down, then I masked off any PE and where any PE will go then sprayed the hull with a high build filler primer-- and yes-- rubbed it down again--- now to give it a thick coat of varnish --then a fine rub down which 'should ' just leave a few spots and areas to tidy up---well that's the plan, and we all know what happens to a plan 😬

Thanks Jeff but you can still see some of the planking lines in certain light, I will give it a final coat of grey primer before applying the PE. This is the first ship I have built that is of 'steel' I normally build Napoleonic ships where nice planking showing is an asset not a hinderance LOL
ArnoldAmbrose
Gidday again, I've never been game to to try one of those, although they can be beautiful models. 4 minutes ago, ianBke said: nice planking showing is an asset not a hinderance LOL But I guess the beauty of 'steel' ships, whether they be made from timber, styrene or what-ever is that BAD planking can be fixed and covered by filler and paint. My personal opinion is that wood ships with exposed planking is more skillful modeling, which, as I said, I've not been game to try. Are any of your Napoleonic models here on Britmodeller? Apologies if they are and I've missed them. Regards, Jeff.
ianBke
I have not been on here long so this is my first build log, This was my last build, Admiral Nelsons HMS Vanguard 1/72 scale he won the battle of the Nile in it, Edited April 25, 2023 by ianBke 7
ArnoldAmbrose
Gidday Ian, that's a beautiful model, waaaay out of my league. Although she's complete you can still show her off in the RFI section. Regards, Jeff.

I will do that, we have builders working here at the moment and she is tucked away with the rest of the fleet, so when they finish in a couple of weeks I shall take up your suggestion..
ianBke
almost there !!! just a few spots needed doing.. The long white line from the bow is just the reflection from the drying varnish .
