Royal Navy Type 45 Destroyer : HMS Daring (1/350 Trumpeter)

I've decided, for my next build, to go 'all modern'. Nice flat sides and maybe no rigging.

So I present to you HMS Daring.

p?i=302ebc260d84080f7edc2315a0fe217d

A box of bits

p?i=e0e7acfcafc82ffa4120beee96c2c0b7

And me being me, couldn't resist a little extra.

p?i=29eb87337d95a0a64e5d29215aec554f

And, as you can NEVER have enough PE.......

Atlantic Models PE set.

I am looking forward to this one Jon, it will be interesting to compare it with the Airfix one I did a few years ago, and I hope it goes well for you. A goodly selection of extras too.

Interesting subject for you, Jon! Look forward to seeing what you do can do with a modern subject 😊 Are you going to put it on a stand or in the water?

It's a slow start, as I can't sit for long, due to my arthritic hip reminding me it's still there.

I've painted the black boot topping and mask it. And then applied the anti-foul red.

p?i=656488621fe17bd5ea0550ddfc4522db

Masked and mounted on the building block.

p?i=80444f68a5181dfcbc006fcc988d2ab6

The first, of many, PE.

p?i=9ff94d21800094e2774ba8170dff10ff

The hull is now ready to be painted. Then I'll paint the deck and fit it to the hull and then building can begin.

Meanwhile a bit more PE these are from the Atlantic set.

This is todays progress, hull and deck painted.

Colourcoats. https://www.sovereignhobbies.co.uk/.  NARN52 for the hull and this will cover 90% of the rest of the ship and NARN54 for the deck and a few other horizontal surfaces on the superstructure.

I have no connection with Sovereign Hobbies, but I do recommend their paint as it covers really well, dries quite quickly and doesn't pong too much.

Next I'll be working on the superstructure, which I will build as subassemblies and then mount them on the deck.

It occurred to me when I was attaching the deck, that this is quite a big ship, I always think of destroyers as being smallish.

So I've done a comparison photo, all the same scale 1/350.

Top is this build HMS Daring, next is Dunkerque a WW2 French Battleship, then D445 USS Fletcher a WW2 USA Destroyer and last, but by no means least, HMS Anchusa a WW2 Flower Class Corvette.

Interesting to think, that HMS Daring could probably sink if not cripple these other three without them even seeing her.

Gidday Jon, that's an interesting size comparison. A build of last year, the destroyer HMS Glamorgan was about the size of a Dido class light cruiser of WW2. And ships a few centuries ago? Although I've never seen her I always envisaged the Cutty Sark to be large, long and slender. But her hull is almost the same dimensions of the Flower class corvettes. And a clincher - according to a magazine of diagrams I have, HMS Victory (a battleship) had a gundeck 186 feet long and 51 feet beam, shorter than the Flowers but just over 1 1/2 wider, or 1/2 the beam of Dunkerque🤔

Regards, Jeff.

@ArnoldAmbrose I walked around, didn’t go aboard as it was closed, Cutty Sark a couple of years ago when I visited my eldest son, who lives in London. And it is quite small, but looks big due to the masts. I visited HMS Victory many years ago, and that looks huge, because I think, it’s not afloat. So the hull towers over you, but ‘tween decks it has very low headroom. What ever it must have been like in there, when the guns were in action, I can’t begin to imagine.

Mr Hip, is on the retreat (for now) so I'm able to get back to the bench and press on.

All (I think) the horizontal surfaces are painted

p?i=4ea4ae9bd08ccdcb7c8c99f426176984

Quick bit of dry fitting.

p?i=41fc225d9fd2abc0ba8fdee6ce559f21

Now I can start adding the myriad of PE to the vertical surfaces. Doors, mesh grills etc. THEN, I can paint the vertical surfaces, just hope I've enough paint, can't get anymore as it's out of stock at the moment at Sovereign.

I has just dawned on me, but there are no scuttles (port holes) on this ship, very odd, the crew must spend their entire shifts under artificial light.

These are the only windows, on the bridge, I can find.

I did consider cutting them out and glazing them, however I've had a rethink. The plastic is quite thick and the frames of the windows are very delicate, so I'll paint them silver and then a coat of transparent blue, that should work.

p?i=9a1fbc8dd4f2697897ee734d00b662ddSee you tomorrow, I hope.

Good progress Jon and hopefully you've enough paint for the job. That size comparison across your various ship types is quite astonishing.

I used a polarised film on my Airfix Type 45, I'd recommend something like that for modem ship windows.

That's quite an interesting comparison. I suppose she's the size of a WWII cruiser! With 6 missiles, I suppose she could take out the them in just a few minutes.

Submariners who spend all their time on the surface.

Cheers Alan. Looking at photos of the ship, these windows have a grey tint.
