MWD
Hi guys. Is there a difference between British and USA Olive Drab on softskin vehicles. I would like my models to look the right colours if possible.
Graham Boak
Yes, in softskins and on AFVs. British OD (SCC15) was slightly greener than the browner US colour. Whether all US vehicles in British service would be repainted is open to some doubt. AFVs yes, softskins probably not. SCC15 was introduced in the spring of 1944, earlier US-supplied AFVs would have been repainted in brown SCC2. The standard instruction was that vehicles were not to be repainted until needed at overhaul or repair, and initially SCC15 was in limited supply. British-built softskins will not have been in US OD at any time, and many will have stated in brown throughout the war. This is for Western Europe, other colours were used overseas. For a fuller account, visit the MAFVA website and look for Mike Starmer's article. Appropriate paints can be found in the Colourcoats range, see Sovereign Hobbies. ColonelKrypton
You did not specify whether Great War or Second World War but best guess is Second World War. As noted, search for @Mike Starmer articles on British colors. Start here: https://mafva2023.org/?p=2607 Also, search on Steve Zaloga and olive drab. He has a couple of documents on the subject, start with this one: https://mojobob.com/stuff/Zaloga - Olive Drab.pdf and this one: http://ampscv.org/tutorials/Seventy-Five-Years-of-Olive-Drab.pdf cheers, Graham
