Well... I don't think I've ever been first in the gallery. 

 

A couple of years ago I bought AFV Club's three versions of the "deuce and a half" truck. Two of those got built for Vietnam GB and I just finished number three, I felt like doing a quick fun build and it was exactly that. I really like the look of these trucks and you can find them all over Youtube, being bought and restored. Still very popular and apparently virtually indestructable.

This is my 1/76 Airfix ex JB Models Alvis Saracen Mk 2 APC. Rushed into service in the early 1950's due to problems in Malaya, they went on to serve the British Army for many years and were reasonably successful - the full story is in my build thread here.

It is in the markings (I think) of "British Forces Borneo" during the conflict with Indonesia over the formation of Malaysia between 1962 and 1966.

I took the photos indoors, partly to get a better angle and partly because it was raining outside but it does meant that the colour is a bit out. Later the sun came out so this gives you a rather better idea.

 A nice simple build and still quite detailed though I have ditched the kit Bren gun as it was very poor.

The Saracen above was a simple 1950's solution to the problem of moving infantry on a battlefield, but back in the late 1960's the Russians came up with something different - what is commonly called an Infantry Fighting or Combat Vehicle in the shape of the BMP. This is my build of the ACE kit of the later BMP-2 in 1/72 and here is the thread.

When the BMP appeared it caused some consternation in the West as it was a tracked vehicle more than capable of keeping up with the tanks over rough terrain and not only had heavy firepower but was also designed to allow the infantry inside to fight in a hostile environment such as after the used of nuclear or chemical/biological weapons. The kit is a bit of a dog - poor instructions, at times bad engineering, poorly planned sprue attachment points, flash etc  and a bit of a mixed bag in terms of detail, but with care it makes up quite well.

 

As you can see the paint is sensitive to lighting and the background also causes a few problems with my camera in terms of colour rendition.

 

I did not entirely enjoy the build but at the time I bought it this was about the only kit available in this scale. ACE do quite a few versions of the BMP family but you need a bit of skill and strong nerves to build them in my opinion.

My wee Scammel Scarab build developed into a a bundle of fun and all was finally assembled onto a display. The profiteroles required eating first but once that challenge was met, the way was clear for some foamboard

This is my build of the Revell 1/72 Warrior MCV. It entered service with the 1st Battalion of the Grenadier Guards in May 1987 and according to Revell this is in their markings whilst taking part in exercise "Iron Hammer" in 1988 whilst part of BAOR. Here is a link to the build.

It is an early version without the added armour seen in the Gulf War.

 

The number on a plate clipped to the turrets basket is presumably something to do with the exercise. A nice enough kit that went together quickly.

And this is the Revell M2A2 version of the Bradley - entering service slightly earlier than the Warrior, this is an improved version with extra armour, and according to Revell it is in the markings of C Company, 2nd Battalion of 6th Infantry Regiment when part of the US 1st Armoured Division on 2002. Here is a link to the build.

The first pic shows it with the win TOW missile launcher raised to the firing position but with the front "door" still closed.

It is down in the travelling position in the next two pics - it has to be stationary when firing the missiles.

Another nice enough kit though a bit more complicated than the Warrior.

This is the 1/200 Hasegawa kit, finished using mostly Tamiya acrylic paints.

This is Tamiya's 1/48 fuel tanker, it was based on GMC's CCKW chassis. This is the earlier style chassis, with the closed cab based on its pre-war commercial truck.

My final entry is the Airfix boxing of a couple of versions of the Bedford QL series 3 ton trucks - the QLD general purpose transport and the QLT troop carrier. Here is a link to the build thread.

They were a bit tricky to put together at times but came out quite well.

Magna Models 1/48 Percival Sea Prince

 

Well this was a bit of a struggle at times but here is my Model of the Royal Navy Percival Sea Prince. The somewhat obscure plane was used extensively for training and transport by both the RAF as the Prince and the Navy as the Sea Prince. Differences were minimal but both services used them as radar and navigation trainers and as officer transports. I chose to build this in the guise of a Royal Navy Admirals transport, commonly known as an 'Admirals Barge'.  The RAF used them in the Reconnaissance role, photographing East Germany while flying from West Germany to Berlin.

The model is built from a Magna Models Resin kit which is the only offering so far in 1/48. The basic kit is a bit crude but has some excellent innovations. Apart from an excellent cockpit, there are 2 complete interiors provided. A training layout with 3 students seats and radar consoles then an airline set up with 9 very comfortable looking seats. Due to the issues of making the windows (none provided in the kit) the ones I made were not too clear so I missed out the interior. Had the fuselage been a bit thinner and resin less brittle I would have opened the rear door and added the interior but as it was I decided the closed look was more appropriate but kudos to Magna for giving it a go. The wing joint is excellent and located very positivly requiring no additional spar or alignment although I did use brass pins for the tail planes.

Assembly required a bit of fettling as all these resin kits do but nothing too excessive.

Eleven schemes are detailed in the excellent instructions but decals are provided for only 1. Some of the schemes are silver or grey with dayglo noses and wing tips etc but I always liked the 'Green Parrot' Wessex Admirals barge. I usually avoid grey planes if possible so opted for this in 'Emerald Green' for which I used an aerosol of Ford Medena Green from a local auto parts co. The white letters were from an old Model Decal sheet and went on beautifully. Roundals were from the kit.

This is Revell's 1/24 scale Krupp Titan, it's a right beast. Normally, this truck has a long dropsides bed on it, but I converted it into a fifth wheel tractor unit. The chassis was shortened considerably for this, and the fifth wheel asssembly and the susie rack were scratchbuilt. It's a lovely big truck with lots of character.

Hey all, this was a different one for me, as I've only ever modeled aircraft before! I'll admit, I found 1/72 vehicles challenging! In the end what I've modeled here is a Roden Opel Blitz and an Academy Luftwaffe bomb loader (plus an Airfix Luftwaffe SC250 bomb).

 

 

I did a very poor job on the Blitz, especially the windshield, which I attempted with Kristal Klear. But, I did enjoy the experience!

 

 

And here's another photo of the bomb loader.

 

 

Sorry these aren't more impressive, but thanks for including me in a fun GB!

My final entry for this GB is the Trumpeter 1/72 BTR-70 (late model). A nice enough kit that builds up easily and quickly. I have no idea what unit or even country the markings are for as Trumpeter give no details, but I would imagine it is in Soviet/Russian service. Here is a link to the build thread.

 As mentioned in the thread the BTR-60/70/80 were produced as cheaper alternatives to the BMP series of tracked IFV so here it is next to a BPM-2 for comparison.

The BMP was designed to survive when working in close company with the tank brigades whilst the BTR equipped units would follow behind them - at least in theory.

DUKW from the Airfix Classic range in 1:76. Built OOB, brush painted with Xtracrylix Olive Drab matted down with Liquitex matt varnish. Finished with the kit transfers which are ostensibly for a DUKW used at Arromanches during Operation Overlord in June 1944. Enjoyable build with a dose of nostalgia thrown in.

Another Airfix Classic. This time the Scammell Tank Transporter in 1:76. Built OOB apart from a windscreen from some food packaging. Brush painted with Lifecolour Mid Stone with a finishing coat of Liquitex matt varnish. Enjoyable build, apart from the assembly and painting of multiple wheels.
