SprueMan
Hello, I have a silly problem. The Ammo paints "lucky varnish" I am using is not micro leveling when drying. I have airbrushed Tamiya acrylic paint and ammo's normal "ammo" paints with no problem, but the "lucky varnish" is not so lucky for me. Both the gloss and the satin will not for any money level out on the surface, instead in contracts to microdimples, as if the model was dusted, rather than sprayed. I am using the 1.5bar pressure that is recommended, and I have tried: To lightly building up the layer in one sitting, letting dry, then going over it again. Giving it a decent "wet" layer" even to the first sign of running Building it over multiple settings by letting it dry for 5 minutes, then spraying over once more (and once more) But none of these work. It just will not stay flat. Whats more, it seems not to fully stick to the model, I tried to clean a surface section with a damp cloth, and the varnish came off. Because I have used acrylic paints for the model (and a layer of the Ammo gloss coat before applying decals), I am kinda stuck trying to get this to work. I cannot obviously use any other BUT acrylic coat, and even the Humbrol or Tamiya acrylic coat reacts with the paint/coat already on the model, so it is either making this work, or leaving the model as it is... Rob G
Don't feel bad, it's not you, the product's rubbish. The bottle that I bought peels off the surface like an old metallic clear coat from the 90s. Toss it in the bin. You can actually use other products over acrylics, with care. A lot of care. I've airbrushed Tamiya lacquers over Tamiya and Gunze Sangyo acrylics (which are not true acrylics, I know). Wouldn't recommend it though. I've gone back to enamels for most external colours, it's a lot less hassle - I recommend that everyone does the same. I now use Alclad II Aqua Gloss Clear as my acrylic gloss coat of choice. Seems to be pretty good.
ckw
I can recommend Winsor & Newton Galleria acrylic matt and satin varnishes. I airbrush these diluting about 25% with distilled water. The matt is really matt, used over enamel and acrylic paints with no problems. It's also good value - last purchase was £9 for a 250ml bottle. Cheers Colin

Agreed - it's awful. 8 hours ago, ckw said: I can recommend Winsor & Newton Galleria acrylic matt and satin varnishes. I airbrush these diluting about 25% with distilled water. Never had a problem using lacquer clears over any from Tamiya/Gunze/AK or that matter any Acrylic paint. Just light coats at first before a final wet coat
SprueMan
Thanks lads! I have thrown the bottle into the bin. Forcefully. This is what it has caused. Fortunately, as it never dried properly, I can remove the snot with a wet cotton wick.
colin
Hart breaking when you get the other finishes perfect and the final one lets you down. Ammo seems to be releasing so much stuff lately you have to wonder if they ever test it first, it's mind boggling on their site, their even selling thinned down paint in bottles and calling it shaders, you can do that yourself with any paint
