Gidday Beefy, I want to do a Sumner class destroyer in the not-too-distant future, which I think the Gearings were a 14-foot longer version of. So I'll enjoy seeing this come together. Regards, Jeff.

Looking good:popcorn:

The Mk38 5"/38 mount used on Gearing and Sumner class is available in 1/35 scale.

Yes Takom have been releasing a few different ones seen a few built up at a couple of shows last year they look pretty cool something different for the display tables.  👍

tell us a little about her Beefy.

Not got a clue mate cheap second hand kit a few year back liked the look of it and seems to be going together quite well so far just want to get some model time under the belt after a very quiet year for me.

but from Wiki.-Quote -

USS Frank Knox (DD-742) was a Gearing-class destroyer which served in the United States Navy from 1944 to 1971. She was then transferred to the Greek Navy and renamed Themistoklis (D-210). The ship was decommissioned in 1992 and finally sunk as a target in 2001.

fair to say quite a long career

Small update the funnels have had some bling added ladders from kit PE look a bit on the heavy side also started on the measure 22 scheme.

Also the postie left me a Goodie bag quite literally ordered some draft mark decals from @Jamie @ Sovereign Hobbies and some other stuff to replenish some stock also picked up a 20 bag of pick and mix old stock from him great barging in my view get in quick some colours I thought Hmm but then looked at some up and coming planned builds and will need them result.

I know absolutely nothing about US ships - tell us a little about her

Sorry to leap in, but USN WW2 destroyers are kind of 'my thing'...the Gearing class were a long-hulled development of the Sumner class, which were in turn an upgraded development of the excellent Fletcher class (175 of these were built and all served exclusively in the Pacific theatre during WW2.)

The Gearings had excellent machinery and boiler layout, good seakeeping qualities and carried six 5-in guns in three twin turrets. They were built with two quad and two twin 40mm Bofors mounts as standard, and could still ship ten torpedo tubes and depth charge racks along with the most sophisticated air and surface search radars. 98 were built for the USN.

Most of the Gearings were commissioned after WW2 and went on to serve in Korea and Vietnam and as carrier escorts throughout the 60s and 70s. Some received extensive FRAM ASW upgrades. Weaponry was upgraded from 40mm Bofors to 3"/50 rapid firing guns, ASW torpedoes, and ASROC. The last of the class was decommissioned from the USN in 1983, representing a 38 year continuous service history. The last Gearing retired from operational service with the Korean Navy in 2001.

Can't help but notice the growing gap between the weatherworks and the deck, hope is won't be a problem?

Stuart parts are only dry fit at this stage so should joint up OK I hope.

More paint on just the boot top line to do before the deck decals and more small bits.

  • 2 weeks later...

Time for a small update decals well not so good weird shapes and falling apart even though they have been in a sealed bag

Might take a while having to cut into smaller bits to get them on and looking all right with the help of a lot of decal softener to get them to settle down.

Hull decals went on OK though

Gidday Beefy, congratulations. :yahoo: As one who retired officially at Easter last year I can highly recommend it. 👍

Oh, and BTW, the model's looking good too. 😁 I quite like the detail on your fittings, such as the director, DC chutes etc.       Regards, Jeff.
