RAF Eurofighter Typhoon Colour Equivalent

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

I'm in the process of building Revell's 1/72 Eurofighter Typhoon FGR4 and require some assistance towards the painting stage. I have read the pinned post and understand it's been discussed at great lenght, but I currently don't have access to any shops, whether highstreet or online to order, and won't for quite some time.

I understand the main body should be Barley Grey FS36314, or as it is now called Camoflage Grey as British Standard. I neglected to order any of the well known brand equivalents before I went away. I have a varied selection of paints with me at my disposal from Vallejo and Tamiya and wondered if anything could point me in the right direction to a close match please?

Alternatively, if I can mix using a combination, any help is greatfully appreciated.

Many thanks in advance.

There are not many perfect matches, but I have calculated some Tamiya mixes that should work:

626 Camouflage grey - BS381C | GU 16.1
    Target: #959D9E, Mixture: #939C9E
        XF-2 Flat White: 10
        XF-17 Sea Blue: 1
        XF-20 Medium Grey: 4
   100x100100x100
    DE00: 0.77
FS36314 - AMS 595A | GU 1.5
    Target: #8D9390, Mixture: #8B9490
        XF-12 J.N. Grey: 5
        XF-53 Neutral Grey: 2
   100x100100x100
    DE00: 0.96

Those are theoretical, I can verify them with real paints if you wish.

I find this truly fascinating,  but where can I read what all the values actually mean?

I do objective color matches using real paint samples and spectrophotometry.

Here is an explanation of my color match report on a single example:

Target: ANA504 | Olive Drab 504 | GU 63.1, RGB: #5A554A (L*=35.95, a=0.63, b=6.76)
Colors in: Humbrol (compared with 182 paints)
        DE00: 2.46 - #545549 - Humbrol - AA2253 | No 253 | RLM 83 Dunkelgrun - Matt | GU 2.4 (L*=35.41, a=-1.08, b=6.41)

        100x100100x100

Target: ANA504 | Olive Drab 504 | GU 63.1, RGB: #5A554A (L*=35.95, a=0.63, b=6.76)

This line describes TARGET color (means: the color I am matching the paints to). It consists of: Name or code +  all possible alternate names separated by | and a gloss measurement.

  • ANA504
    • Color code. Those are the official numbers that are usually referred to by paint vendors too.
  • Olive Drab 504
    • Color name (as it appeared in the book)
  • GU 63.1
    • Gloss Unit measurement of color. It is a measurement from a Glossmeter device and represents how glossy is the paint. See https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Glossmeter for more info
    • It is a very important factor for human color perception. Very glossy colors appear darker than they really are, and the difference in gloss is quite often more visible than the difference in color.
    • Spectrophotometer in SCI mode measures color regardless of gloss. That means the match might be really good, but it may look wrong until the color and target have the same gloss (or matt) finish.
      • In the example above: Target is glossy (GU 63.1) but the match from Humbrol is very matt (GU 2.4). That means it will look much lighter than Olive Drab 504 until you cover it with gloss varnish.
    • The number scale is not defined by any standard but generally, you can think of them as <5 is very matt, <10 is matt, 10-25 is satin, 25-40 is semi-gloss, 40-80 is gloss, >80 is very glossy, >90 is mirror-like.
  • RGB #5A554A
    • It is an sRGB simulation of spectrophotometer readout. It is much more accurate than any camera photo you can get
      • The camera measures colors using 3 selected points in the color spectrum called more or less red, green, and blue. It then applies a color correction based on current light conditions and its own logic (or magic).
      • My spectrophotometer measures reflected light on the whole continuous color spectrum (400-700nm) using always the same light conditions, then the color is converted to above 3 points measurements and then converted to sRGB.
  • (L*=35.95, a=0.63, b=6.76)
    • Color coordinates in L*a*b* color space. See https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CIELAB_color_space for more info
    • This color representation is much more precise than sRGB and takes into account human color sensitivity
    • The three coordinates of CIELAB represent the lightness of the color (L* = 0 yields black and L* = 100 indicates diffuse white; specular white may be higher), its position between red and green (a*, where negative values indicate green and positive values indicate red) and its position between yellow and blue (b*, where negative values indicate blue and positive values indicate yellow).

Below the target, color are a list of matched paints. They are sorted by paint vendor not by how close they are. For each vendor, only the closest match is given if exists at all.

Each paint target has a similar naming convention:

AA2253 | No 253 | RLM 83 Dunkelgrun - Matt | GU 2.4

  • AA2253 - Paint vendor code. This particular number for example indicates 14ml Tinlet No.1 from Humbrol Enamels.
  • No 253 - Vendor paint number. It can be different than the vendor code. For example, Humbrol sells the same color 253 as both enamels and acrylics. They are different.
  • RLM 83 Dunkelgrun - Matt - Vendor paint name plus all alternate names separated by |. It is just what the vendor says on the bottle.
  • GU measurement - as above, represents gloss units
  • Optional Metallic or Fluorescent special keyword - metallic and fluorescent target colors are matched to metallic and fluorescent paints only.
  • (L*=35.41, a=-1.08, b=6.41) - Color coordinate of measured paint. This allows you to compare the coordinates with the target color. In the example above case, you can see the Humbrol paint is almost equally bright, but it is greener and slightly less blue. RGB may not show that well.

Below are two RGB color squares, which both represent conversion from spectrophotometer measurements to sRGB color space. It is for visual hints only.

You can find some of my colors match reports there or there, for example here is one for ANA colors:

I've checked those theoretical mixes in practice, here is how they look in not-exactly daylight conditions (but as close as I could get :))

626 Camouflage grey - BS381C | GU 16.1
e0214bc90d9ef15ff7a00b85010b4a98.jpg

Small note above, I match paint to original BS paint chips, but they are in form of a booklet which makes them not useful for side comparisons like that and thats why I used the non-original color fan. Spectrophotometer measurements below reflect original BS color chip.

FS36314 - AMS 595A | GU 1.5

cd6b18bf56cd1ab34f384929f9a107ed.jpg

This is compared to original AMS595A fan.

And how spectrophotometer measures them:

c7afe8acb1a18872a4a9264b0a5ab74f.png

f3f5f48ae71ecb9eb7a124fc529832ab.png

I've used multiplies of 100uL as a "unit" to measure the paint ratios, so the first paint drawdown is made using 1500uL (1.5ml of paint) and the other one is just 700. You probably want to mix a bit more in practice.

Supposedly Vallejo Air 71.051 is a match as well.

71.051 is a very poor match.

Here it is next to both targets:

Target: 626 Camouflage grey - BS381C | GU 16.1, RGB: #959D9E (L*=64.18, a=-2.33, b=-1.57)
    DE00: 12.30 - #737A80 - Vallejo - 71.051 | Neutral Gray | Gris Neutral | FS36173 | GU 3.4 (L*=50.98, a=-1.44, b=-4.11)
   100x100100x100

Target: FS36314 - AMS 595A | GU 1.5, RGB: #8D9390 (L*=60.44, a=-2.56, b=0.93)
    DE00: 10.15 - #737A80 - Vallejo - 71.051 | Neutral Gray | Gris Neutral | FS36173 | GU 3.4 (L*=50.98, a=-1.44, b=-4.11)
   100x100100x100

I've listed Vallejo paints I've checked in my post. There might be other matches in Vallejo range I am not (yet) aware of, I am working on getting them all measured eventually.

I'm nowhere capable nor equipped to do the kind of comparison Casey is giving us, but I have 71-051 in my paint stash and I found this useless to represent Camouflage/Barley Grey. I was planning on using this paint on a grey Lightning but when I tried spraying it it looked nothing like what it was supposed to be. In the end I reverted to Gunze's H334, that looks much better.

Now that I've seen Casey's matches I'll buy a bottle of 71.046, not that I have anything against Gunze's paint but I find Vallejo Air paints easier for small touch-ups and to use by brush on smaller areas, something I often have to do on my models even if I mainly use an airbrush.

Back to 71.051, at some point the same Vallejo changed name to this paint and they started labeling the bottles as "Neutral Grey", claiming FS 36173 as match (match that IMHO is also not particularly good). Guess that even the people at Vallejo realised how little this paint had in common with Barley Grey...

Casey, to make sure I follow these fascinating threads correctly, when you post those pairs of rgb squares is the target color (the one you are trying to find a match for) the one on the right?

Look in the "pinned topics" at the top of this section has lots of typhoon  colour information.

Having done a lot of RAF models in Barley Grey/Camo grey, I keep coming back to Tamiya XF19 as the best scale Barley Grey. Other brands-even if they are labelled as such- are simply too dark and in some cases too blue. It also had the advantage of spraying beautifully and consistently, and not having to mix it.

Nobody mentioned Xtracolor. They do both. Are they off?

I can't say, I have not measured any Xtracolors at all. I am still digging my way through full range of Vallejos AIR's ;)
