Troy Smith
Not particularly clear, and I did wonder if it was just part of the chap in the background, but just inboard of the inner rocket on the starboard wing is from a look at a pdf of British explosive ordnance looks to be a flare? possibly a reconnaissance flare? see page 147 of this https://stephentaylorhistorian.files.wordpress.com/2020/09/tm-9-1985-1-british-explosive-ordnance.pdf I'll @Selwyn @Finn @iang It look odder as the rockets are a shipboard lash up, this is a Hurricane of 825 Sq on HMS Vindex, which also has Swordfish with rockets, and they fitted them to their Sea Hurricanes, if you look to the right of the standing man, you can see a rectangle of metal strip, which angles the rocket rails upward, and the "flare" is parallel with the wing. (profiles just normal rocket postion) These Sea Hurricanes were involved in anti U-Boat operations, so I'm guessing flare for marking or low light operations? Other feature of note is the clipped off corners on the UC doors, seen on a few Seafires, to stop the doors snagging on the arrestor wires. There is more on the Vindex Hurricanes in this book, including more photos, and some Swordfish and Wildcats https://www.abebooks.co.uk/book-search/title/escort-carrier-hms-vindex-at-war/author/kenneth-poolman/ also https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HMS_Vindex_(D15) TIA
Finn
It could be a marker of some sort, probably to mark the spot where the U-boat was last seen for those a/c with depth charges. Scroll down to pg 159 and beyond of the link you provided to see if one of those fits. edit: looks like the mount for whatever it is can be seen in this image, note the lanyard/cable hanging down: https://www.iwm.org.uk/collections/item/object/205157276 Jari Edited March 5, 2023 by Finn
