Casey Posted February 26, 2023 Posted February 26, 2023 (edited) I've measured ANA color samples from Official United States Aircraft Colors 1908-1993 - Section 3 1940-1949 publication and matched them with a database of real paints. I've used a commercial spectrophotometer in D65/10deg SCI mode for measurements. All paint matching is done based ONLY on readouts. That means if the vendor calls the paint "ANA 623" and it is not a match, it is not a match. I've provided the paint data, the color targets they should match, and the total color difference using the CIEDE2000 (short: DE00) difference formula - see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Color_difference for more information. Generally, values <=1.0 mean colors are closer than just noticeable differencs by the average human. 2.0 is the industry standard for good color reproduction, but colors differ. I've set the threshold of 3.0 color difference, meaning colors can be visually different but are close enough to be considered a potential match. I will keep this report updated as I measure more paints. A complete list of compared colors is at the end of this post. Important information about how to interpret the color names and other mysterious numbers next to them: Spoiler Here is an explanation of the color match report on a single example Target: ANA504 | Olive Drab 504 | GU 63.1, RGB: #5A554A (L*=35.95, a=0.63, b=6.76) Found a match in: Humbrol (compared with 182 paints) DE00: 2.46 - #545549 - Humbrol - AA2253 | No 253 | RLM 83 Dunkelgrun - Matt | GU 2.4 (L*=35.41, a=-1.08, b=6.41) Target: ANA504 | Olive Drab 504 | GU 63.1, RGB: #5A554A (L*=35.95, a=0.63, b=6.76) - this line describes TARGET color (means: color I am matching the paints to) It consists of: Name or code + all possible alternate names separated by | and a gloss measurement. ANA504 Color code. Those are the official numbers that are usually referred by paint vendors too. Olive Drab 504 Color name (as it appeared in the book) GU 63.1 Gloss Unit measurement of color. It is a measurement from a Glossmeter device and represents how glossy is the paint. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Glossmeter It is very important factor for human color perception. Very glossy colors appear darker than they really are, and difference in gloss is quite often more visible than difference in color. Spectrophotometer in SCI mode measure color regardless of gloss. That means the match might be really good, but it may look wrong until the color and target have same gloss (or matt) finish. In the example above: Target is glossy (GU 63.1) but the match from Humbrol is very matt (GU 2.4). That means, it will look much lighter than Olive Drab 504 until you cover it with gloss varnish. The number scale is not defined by any standard but generally you can think of them as <5 is very matt, <10 is matt, 10-25 is satin, 25-40 is semi gloss, 40-80 is gloss, >80 is very glossy, >90 is mirror like. RGB #5A554A It is an sRGB simulation of spectrophotometer readout. It is much more accurate than any camera photo you can get Camera measures colors using 3 selected points in color spectrum called more or less red, green and blue. It then applies color correction based on current light condition and its own logic (or magic). My spectrophotometer measures reflected light on whole continuous color spectrum (400-700nm) using always the same light conditions, then the color is converted to above 3 points measurements and then converted to sRGB. (L*=35.95, a=0.63, b=6.76) Color coordinates in L*a*b* color space. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CIELAB_color_space This color representation is much more precise than sRGB and takes into account human color sensitivity The three coordinates of CIELAB represent the lightness of the color (L* = 0 yields black and L* = 100 indicates diffuse white; specular white may be higher), its position between red and green (a*, where negative values indicate green and positive values indicate red) and its position between yellow and blue (b*, where negative values indicate blue and positive values indicate yellow). Below target color are list of matched paints. They are sorted by paint vendor not by how close they are. For each vendor only the closest match is given if exists at all. Each paint target have similar naming convention: AA2253 | No 253 | RLM 83 Dunkelgrun - Matt | GU 2.4 AA2253 - Paint vendor code. This particular number for example indicates 14ml Tinlet No.1 from Humbrol Enamels. No 253 - Vendor paint number. It can be different than vendor code. For example, Humbrol sells same color 253 as both enamels and acrylics. They are different. RLM 83 Dunkelgrun - Matt - Vendor paint name plus all alternate names separated by |. It is just what vendor says on the bottle. GU measurement - as above, represents gloss units Optional Metallic or Fluorescent special keyword - metallic and fluorescent target colors are matched to metallic and fluorescent paints only. Optional Opacity measurements on 10mil (254 micron) wet film paint - it is noted as Opacity x%, meaning the paint is only x% opaque on such paint thickness. 10 mil is very thick. (L*=35.41, a=-1.08, b=6.41) - Color coordinate of measured paint. This allows you to compare the coordinates with the target color. In this case you can see the Humbrol paint is almost equally bright, but it is more green and slightly less blue. RGB may not show that well. Below are two RGB color squares, which both represent conversion from spectrophotometer measurements to sRGB color space. It is for visual hint only. The real ANA color sample is on the left; the compared paint sample color is on the right. Yes_Man Posted February 27, 2023 Posted February 27, 2023 Interesting to see the Hataka Sky is a poor match for British WAM Sky but a good match for the Lend Lease US Sky. Makes you assume that it was the reference chip they were in fact going off
Casey Posted March 29, 2023 Author Posted March 29, 2023 I've measured more Vallejo paints and found that 71.302 - Sky Type S is a (relatively poor) match for ANA610. 3 2

David H Posted March 24 Posted March 24 The Humbrol 104, Oxford Blue is new to me too. I always thought their Midnight Blue would be the closest match...

David H Posted March 25 Posted March 25 I just tried out Troy's formula of XF-17 and X-16, but i don't have any photos yet. I'll post my results next week when i get back from Florida. 1

It'll be dry tomorrow and I'll share it's measurements (I am curious since since I have a very recent XF-17) 1

It'll be dry tomorrow and I'll share it's measurements (I am curious since since I have a very recent XF-17) Using the dark blue variant of XF-17 will not work. The old XF-17, certainly the one I have, was a greeny blue, which reminded me of the color that was in the Humbrol Authentic range as sea blue. In one of the discussions on Sea blue on here, @Mike Starmer mentioned his mix for ANA 623 using Humbrol, 4 parts 77 Sea Blue to 1 part 68 gloss purple, by chance I had X-16, bought as cheap, for possible toy use as its pretty lurid, and thought I'd try it. The result was surprising. I'll have to find the paints and do some swatches. Is there a record of the real pigments in ANA 623?

So, in order to make an accurate looking 623 using your formula, i need to start off with the "Bad" Batch of XF-17?

Troy Smith Posted March 25 Posted March 25 13 minutes ago, David H said: i need to start off with the "Bad" Batch of XF-17? Not bad, just the old formula. Various Tamiya colors have changed. Comparison I was surprised to see that the purples were also different. Also, I tried my mix, though I had to thin the old paint, 1:1 was far too purple. Better was xf17:2 x16:1, I did have a play with the new XF17 and X16, @Casey Too dark but a similar hue was xf17:3, x16:3, xf5 :1 that's crude drops of mixer stick, and I then needed to stop playing with paint.. not sure if a little white will help, or just make it too grey.

I will go back and try the 2:1 XF-17/X-16 mix when i get home. I too thought it looked a little too purple at first and increasing the XF-17 should fix that. I can see the differences in paint samples above, the differences in the purple are more obvious to me than the differences in the blue. -d-
Casey Posted March 25 Author Posted March 25 I've made the mix, here are the results: Blue is the target, red is the sample. Comments: This is a 2.76 color difference (DE) match - which means it is rather a poor one - for comparison Humbrol 104 is 2.77 DE. The resulting color is slightly too dark and shifted to purple instead of blue-green (Munsell scale is pretty useful there it gives the overall color hue - target is 10.13 BG "blue green" and mix is 2.13 P "Purple"). Tamiya mix has measured gloss of 1.0, 9.0, 15.6 gloss units (20/60/85 degrees), which is not glossy enough. Glossy Sea Blue should be 2.0/18.9/28.1 so you still need to add satin varnish. And here is a photo for people who need it: 4 1

Note my comments about trying the mix again, and my initial foray using the new colors as well. I'll play with more later.
David H Posted March 25 Posted March 25 (edited) Thanks for doing the independent testing, Casey!! Even if the first run is off, adding Super Clear into the mix has definitely improved the gloss and made the paint more durable. In the mean time i think i will update my Vickers VC10 posting... David H Posted March 29 Posted March 29 (edited) I don't know if this will make a world of difference but i found a hobby shop in Orlando FL that sold the Tamiya acrylics in the larger, 25ml bottles, so i picked up a jar of XF-17. Looking at it outdoors in daylight it did seem to have a bit of a greenish cast- vaguely reminiscent of 35042- so maybe it's the "Right" stuff, maybe not. Will also see if changing the mixing ratio initially to 3:2 makes much difference..... I will probably sand down the test piece painted with the AS-8 (since its the wrongest of the wrong sea blues) and re apply the new mix to that. -d- Edited March 29 by David H Just vomiting out the latest and greatest thoughts that came to mind.
David H Posted March 30 Posted March 30 Well, taking the bottle of paint from Orlando and combining it with Gloss Purple, i came up with this.... 3 parts XF-17, 2 parts X-18, and Mr Color UVCut blended in for gloss. Based on Casey's feedback about the original mix being too purple, i increased the XF-17 somewhat to dial the purple back but not overpower it entirely. Test was performed on an already started, 48th scale Tamiya F4U-1A kit, slated to be a Brewster F3A-1A..... The light outdoors today wasn't stellar but it wasn't overcast, either. Interested in hearing Casey's thoughts on this one as well as her thoughts on the earlier, 4 colour blend i tried a while back. 3

It is really difficult to understand the color without seeing the correct reference near it, if anything I'd say it feels too blue and/or too glossy.

I admit its not very scientific. I took the photos outside because up to this point i felt the incandescent phots weren't good at telling the whole story. That formula you specified with the 4 colours and the Deck Tan in it... You still feel its the best match so far?

It is not the best match of all the paints I've tried, but it is the best I could find using Tamiya Acrylics in XF range using XF-1 to XF-60. From my math perspective, the resulting spectra of the mix should look like this:

If *this* match is better (i.e., closer to the target) than the one using just the XF-17 and the X-16, i'm gonna go with it, for El Corsair Grande Numero Quatro. -d- 1
