The Valley Of The Vixens, where Avons love to tread.

I dont see masterpieces any time soon or ever

This time there is Milliput, not extraneous substances on both booms

Smooth it a bit.

16807077448947442405597103369343.jpg

maybe more

Then16807090066096815246134768703056.jpg

Stop messing around and let the stuff dry out!

OK I will

The boomlet has been treated to a dollop or two of Milli too, so we can get close to size

The extra millimeat will allow me to size up to the new top fitment.

I have been trying to channel my 'inner CedB'

No SO much finding suitable FNAARR points in narratives as trying to do this right

This being my Lighting

Much as I love the various camo schemes the RAF tried out to save me from the perils of NM finish but at the end of the day I grew up a child of the era.

Lightnings are silver metal finished aluminium under a coat of GLEAMING SHINE.

Ced has espoused using shiny wax to represent the same look so I am giving it a go, under  the wings where I can hide the horrid after crud if it goes wrong...

Please dont let it go wrong, I do have images to guide me it's true but...

P1010274.jpg

Wax on

And be it regarded as a sign, just found @TheBaron's segment on building Sea Vixen cockpits in a small space  (P61/62 ish of the Two Vixens thread) around the nose wheel well.

Work on that continues this weekend, it does make some of the Airwaves stuff redundant but not as bad as it might have...

A few hours later

16808727991238430386098449580207.jpg

Silver yes but...

16808729616648311457507692788667.jpg

Polish to a super smooth surface finish first.

Where's me micromesh?

On Vixenry let us consider this

I have been wondering whether I have the front to the boom uppers in the right place

16808812543897210662658905316492.jpg

Seems I might be OK

8546080898_58b0dfacc9_b.jpg

I must admit this from Tony's earlier punts at the shape had me fretting a tad

50333460662_29d2d018b3_b.jpg

There's a decision to be made later on whether to install a refuelling boom, I have many pictures of Sea Vixens with an obvious lack of same...

Decision decided

Although there will undoubtedly be paint, possibly even occasional wax finishing, the Lightning is waiting for the postie..
Two flavours of Bare Metal Foil ordered for delivery later this week.

I recognise a need to be scrupulously clean and to produce a dust free surface

Or seven or eight

P1010279.jpg

All elements of errant wax have been extracted ad  the surfaces, so far sanded and dusted

The same surfaces will need to be almost polished to give a decent surface to foil onto, I understand

P1010281.jpg

It's due to land on Thursday or Friday, where's me polishing cloths?

Brave or what, Bill.  Have a medal in advance (in case you don’t survive to collect it later).

I’ve always fancied the idea of using BMF but having a healthy dose of self-preservation never actioned it…

I did try using kitchen foil on the Airfix 1/24 P51 when I was a teenager.  That didn’t end well… For either of us… :D

Should be OK, when Tomo did his magical little Fury which endeared the stuff to me he gave me an offcut to try out on something, now lost in the mists of time, it impressed me mightily.

I think if I handle it with caution, polish furiously the place for each layer and pray, it will be worth trying.

Lets face it my stashimus minimus has had a pair of these Hasegawa-like Lightings hanging about for years, also includes bits to turn Airfix bits into some T4s.

If nothing else this can be a stash eradication exercise so I can move on.

I have Lynxes and Sea King HC4s in the same stash, needing building...

Ooo, BMF, now your talking!

Like Steve @Fritag, I also tried it once as a teenager, on an old Airfix Thunderbolt. I really liked it at the time, but with the passage of time, and a maturing beholders eye, my shoddy work began to show itself!

Good luck with this venture. A foiled Lightning should look stunning.

With polishing under weigh* on the Lightning I have been cribbing wildly from Tony's Sea Vixen tour de force and making ready to build a cabin for the two intrepid guys that fly them.

It seems there is a big beefy nosewheel bay there but not on the Frogeye so a cavity had to be let into the nose.

168114078140231847262022468990.jpg

Not bad considering there was only a shallow interior place where the nose wheel should sit with a couple of holes to take the pins on the nose wheel leg.

This new cavity will bridge the join between the old kit position and the newer nose

This schematic shows me partially what to look for

1681142675726779733606982173095.jpg

I am unsure the floor ought to be this high

So were 71Chally and Tony, this interim height was flexible

16811430161564107991277626940371.jpg

but between themselves they became content and so, therefore was I and after glueing the well section into the rear fuselage half

16811428058405262776633621485784.jpg

look lower down

16811427753427069886335475127554.jpg

This is the beginning of the cockpit interior that will miraculously appear inside, feel free to chuckle huh.

This nice droring shows my basic intentions, set in a couple of floors and add the side and front consoles from Airwaves which are due to be chemically blacked in yet another experiment

Observations from the Streetly Met Office

17.45 heavy hailfall, my!

When I finally finish casting a couple of tail cones I need to thicken the front upper booms so I mocked the deeper, thicker front boom with a piece of tamiya-type tape

This is roughly how its going to fit

*etymology for a friend who might not know and who'd wonder why I mis-spelt way

Under weigh relates to ships up-anchoring ready to sail away

Very much appreciated, thank you :D

Top job with that front wheel well  Good thing Tony  @TheBaron provided so many ref pics in his build(s)!

Aint it just...

A new occasional item

"OFF THE SHELF"

I was searching for Phantom Intake Ramp pictures when I came across some shots I took of this at Yeovilton a few years ago.

Reminded me I'd let it slide

I am bringing this back into circulation

16812127795591247227839422067240.jpg

Just some minor attention to the windows ought to make me happy enough

A change of colour scheme is called for however, HSS this time.

Ooh good. I was sad to see that shunted to one side*  - although I do understand your frustrations with that kit, Bill.

*nothing to do with the fact that I have a vac form version sitting in my stash…

That is OK then, Giorgio likes chips.

I forgot I had a pack of chrome B.M. Foil, I bought it when I was shiny-nosing the Hind last year so I have a clear field to make a beginning with.

oooh, this is starting to look very special with the bmf on it.

Add to that the fact that Giorgio likes chips and all is well!

Ian

PS Giorgio, is that with or without spaghetti?
