1/700 Trumpeter Kirov Class Battlecruiser Frunze

Recommended Posts

The Frunze was renamed to Admiral Lazarev after the fall of Soviet in 1992. She was the second out of four Kirov battle cruisers to be commisioned into service. These warships boasted more than 252 m from  bow to stern and were armed with a massive arsenal of 20xP-700 and 12x8 S-300F missiles. AA defences against aerial or missile atack comprised 8 x CIWS. Formidable battlecruiser that made US navy rethink about the need for bigger warships with modern weaponry. The solution was modernizing the antiquated Iowa Class battleships in order to keep up with the Russian arms race. The model was brush painted and weathered with oils and Pigma Micron pen. The aerials on the ship was made from stretched sprue. Rigging with Prym elastic thread.

Love the Russian ships of this era, they are so unique in their appearance and absolutely covered in missiles. You've done a really nice job if the most spectacular of ships, weathered really nicely and I like the touch of the helicopter in the process of landing.

Fantastic model bissy. An impressive result and I particularly like your weathering and detailing of every window/porthole. Do you prefer 1/700 or 1/350 for ships?

Thank you so much. Glad you like the battlecruiser. I used thin black paint for the windows and the scuttles. I don´t mind building 1/350 scaled ships, But I find it easier to paint 1/700 ships. Less labour intensive maybe. Although that depends how much work is invested into the build. Photo etched parts on bigger ships is more manageable. Too fiddly when the same build is half the size. 🤔😙

Great job on your model bissyboat 👍.

The close-up photos for some reason reminds me of the big empire ship in Star Wars

Thank you! Hehehe. It´s a little slice of the Death Star. 😁

Thank you so much for your appreciation. I only knew the Potemkin before I bought this boat kit 11 years ago. The idea was to make the Ka25 take off, but It works both ways. 🍷

She's a beauty.... Who knows, maybe one day in 350th scale she might sail in... I admit, I was weak, and already bought Adm. Chabanenko.. (with Microdesign set).......

Thank you. 🌟

It´s not the Frunze but this is one of the Kirov battlecruisers in 1/350 from Trumpeter.

Yeah, I know. I don't know how much are you guys acquainted with Micro design, but they are absolute must for modern Russian warships.... https://microdisign.ru/

And for Kirov...  https://microdisign.ru/products/flot/tark-pyotr-velikiy-trumpeter

No. It´s all new to me. Nice model of the Pjotr that demonstrates the look of the PEs. Thanks for sharing Zoran. 👍

Very nicely done.  She definitely doesn't look 1/700 scale.  I must confess that these ships scared me.  If they put to sea, their combination of missiles would likely wreak havoc on a NATO task group and if combined with air and submarine attack they would have been extremely formidable.  That said, once they'd fired their 20 SS-N-19 missiles, they were just a very large target.

Originally named Admiral Lazarev in 1985. But after the fall of the Soviet Union in 1992 she changed her name to Frunze.

I think it was the other way around.  She was certainly Frunze in 1984 straight out of build.  I was serving as an OOW in HMS ALACRITY at the time and in August of that year we were Fleet Contingency Ship at high readiness for short notice tasking.  We were tasked to sail at high speed and pick up Frunze which was exiting the Baltic having been built in Leningrad and we followed her on her sea acceptance trials all the way around to North Cape where I might have gotten a little too close at quite high speed.  "Well, you didn't actually hit her" was all my Captain said as he went back to bed!

The KA25 nose up attitude is flaring so definitely landing though I must confess, I wouldn't land (or take off for that matter) on a flight deck with the ensign staff up.  However, having seen a Soviet Ka25 pilot in the Persian Gulf hovering alongside us and wearing nothing but shorts, a flying helmet and a cigarette in his mouth, I sense their approach to flight safety is somewhat less strict than what I was brought up with!

Great model of a hugely impressive ship

Thanks for the kind words and the back info. That’s true Frunze was during the Soviet period. Renamed to Admiral Lazarev in 1992. Got my wires crossed. My head must’ve been in a fog. Mistake rectified in a minute. 🍷
