1/48 ICM Beaufort as AW207 BX-H of 86 Squadron. Lost on Gardening operation, November 24th, 1941

Recommended Posts

It's been a busy month with little opportunity to work on the model. Had Covid again (boo) - a pretty mild case this time, but it seemed to linger for quite a while. Anyway, the front nose glass section fell off when I barely touched it so as luck would have it it wasn't so stuck that it couldn't removed anymore. This meant I could put that instrument back on the navigator's table.

I've mainly been focusing on adding the Eduard PE for the bomb bay, the flaps, and the wheel bays. I've not used all the PE - for example, not the strips that fit over all the ribs of the flap section because they seem to block the fit of the flaps. Probably my fault. I've also removed the inner most rib of the flap section because it interfered with the fit of the wings to the fuselage. I'm beginning to learn to compromise with these PE sets. On to the pics:

The engines will be next. I've ordered Aerocraft's correction set for the cowl rings - haven't tried this brand before and I'm very curious about the quality. After the engines I can start thinking about painting.

As always, thanks for looking!

Looking good so far!  I can't believe how much photoetch there is!

Beautiful work.

I have the Aerocraft cowling fronts/collector rings for the Beaufort. They are a great improvement on the kit parts. They also come with replacement oil cooler inserts for the wings.

cheers

Wow, what you have achieved with the cockpit and wheel wells is inspiring.

That is A LOT of PE on the outside.

Really looking forward to seeing how you paint and weather all that delicious PE detail. If it is as good as the interior this is going to be an absolutely stunning model.

While I'm still waiting on the engine parts to arrive, I've prepped the rest of the model for the painting stage:

I should be able to put a coat of primer on tomorrow.

Primer on. I'm always surprised at how forgiving One Shot / Stynylrez is - it evens out beautifully even when you accidentally flood an area with too much paint.

Camouflage on next - since AW207 is an uneven number I'll follow the camouflage pattern of the other uneven numbered aircraft in ICM's instructions, but with Extra Dark Sea Grey and Dark Slate Gray and Night underneath.

Some unexpected free time this morning with my wife taking three year old O for Oscar with her on an excursion into town. I laid down a pre-light marble coat of Mig Ammo Grey Shine:

This was followed by three misted coats of thin AK third gen Extra Dark Sea Grey mixed with clear gloss. The photo makes the grey look much lighter and warmer than it is - in real life it's darker and it's got a nice bluish tint:

I don't think I'll be able to book much progress in the next two-three weeks because we have a trip to the US coming up. We'll see...

Managed to squeeze in a little more time working on the model today. I finished the wheels/tires. The main wheels are from CMK but I kept the kit tail wheel because I think that the CMK parts represent a later type than fitted to the mk.1.

Elger, as usual a smashing interior and amazing work on the marbaling.  Quick question, what thinning ratio and air brush pressure do you use for the marbaling—well done, Erwin

I thinned the Ammo Grey Shine with Hataka thinner at a ratio of about 40/60 (paint/thinner) - which is thinner than I do usually because Ammo paints are almost airbrush ready anyway. The compressor is set to about 18 psi.

Back safe and sound from the US. Managed to paint the Dark Slate Grey today. Next will be the night black undersides.

Looking good there! Terrific detailing in the lights and underside too. I'm glad someone has released a cowling ring set - the kit cowl openings always looked a bit big to me.

Adrian

Hi Adrian, yes, definately get the Aerocraft cowling set. It includes the oil coolers too. Makes a world of difference to the finished model and the molding quality is first class.

I'm very curious - it's still being delivered - post Brexit mail order from the UK is not fantastic unfortunately.

Hi Elger,  the post from the UK to here on the east coast USA just south of Boston averages about 10 days. I don't know what the normal is for Europe.
