My bottles are from 2021, it could be worth checking if they are any color variations between years/batches, but they also make the same color as spray can that is supposed to be 100% match, so this might be a pretty stable color recipe for them.

Going after lunch so will see how it checks out edit: sold out, got myself another pot of Humbrol 165, happy using that for MSG, having done a ocuple of builds using that and mission models which is near identical, though dunno what I'm going to use the rest of the Xtrarcylix on.....

I've measured more Vallejo paints, including most of Vallejo FAA (Fleet AIR ARM) Colors 1939-1945 'Air War Color Series'  Model Paint Kit. I've found only one good match.

Target: RAF13 - Sky Grey | GU 3.0, RGB: #A5A9AA (L*=69.08, a=-1.21, b=-0.68)
Colors in: Vallejo (compared with 134 paints)
        DE00: 0.59 - #A6A9A9 - Vallejo - 71.407 | Sky Grey | Gris Cielo | FS36463 | GU 3.8 (L*=68.97, a=-0.81, b=-0.50)
       100x100100x100

I've checked the following:

  • 71.074 | Beige | Beige | FS33695 | GU 2.7
  • 71.077 | Wood | Madera | GU 1.7
  • 71.079 | Tan Earth | Tierra | GU 2.4
  • 71.081 | Ochre | Ocre | GU 2.1
  • 71.082 | Fluorescent Red | Rojo Fluorescente | FS38903 | RAL2005 | GU 2.5 | Fluorescent | Opacity 32.63%
  • 71.083 | Orange | Naranja | GU 2.5 | Opacity 64.68%
  • 71.302 | Sky Type S | Verde Cielo | BS210 | GU 2.5
  • 71.309 | Dark Slate Grey | Gris Pizarra Oscuro | FS34096 | BS634 | GU 1.9
  • 71.405 | BS Dark Sea Grey | BS Gris Mar Osc. | GU 1.3
  • 71.406 | Light Slate Grey | Gris Pizarra Claro | GU 1.5
  • 71.407 | Sky Grey | Gris Cielo | FS36463 | GU 3.8

I am adding paints one by one, even if Fluorescent Red and Orange had no chance to be on the list, I added them to show how I am measuring not-opaque paints. The note "Opacity X%" means the paint is only X% opaque on a 10mil wet film thickness layer (it is really thick, 254 microns). If this note appears, it means the paint is a form of filter and needs to be applied on a proper background. In the case of Fluorescent or Orange, it should be white. I saw Aotake paints in the Vallejo list, which will also be transparent.

Now the question is: what should I paint now with those 260+ extra bottles of Vallejo I got?...

If you can match RAF 16, 17 and 18 you get the full Numberwang!

I need to get this mythical new Humbrol dropper bottle for at least Azure Blue. Other blues, I have mixes for - Tamiya and Golden Fluid.

As you are a scientist/engineer after my own heart I shall wait for the lab results.

I've since got a pot and mines come out what appears to the eye too purple.

As rather than continue the nonexistent discussion in this thread as its a BSC colour, say here, quite tricky colour as its browner/greyer than regular dark green but greener than olive drab

Colour is 285 Nato Green, tricky as photos show is as darker than the swatchs or show a lighte much faded aircraft/

Thinking either Xtracrlyix ANA613 (though if my memory serves it was a greener than usual pot) or one of the two migammo colours and my eye can't detect which is closer

How mine went, you can see on some other forums... it was Humbrol Disaster.

NATO green, I have this:

Target: BS285 Nato Green
Matches in: Humbrol (compared with 170 samples)
        DE00: 0.92 - AB0253 | No 253 | RLM 83 Dunkelgrun - Matt | GU 0.8

Matches in: Lifecolor (compared with 12 samples)

       100x100100x100
Matches in: Revell (compared with 86 samples)
        DE00: 1.60 - 36142 | Yellowish olive | GU 1.8
       100x100100x100
Matches in: Vallejo Air (compared with 254 samples)

        DE00: 2.20 - HTK-A016 | Dark Green | GU 9.6
       100x100100x100
Matches in: Tamiya (compared with 40 samples) (I do not have all TAMIYA measured, so I did not have chance to measure their dedicated NATO green yet, this is the closest I found so far)
        DE00: 2.20 - XF-51 | Khaki Drab | GU 4.9

I shall order some Humbrol 253, see how the dropper version looks, clearly I was looking at paints that were way too brown. and hadn't even considered it Thanks Again Casey

edit: didn't have the dropper version, but the same old style ones you tested, I concor it looks good for Nato Green, also picked up Humbrol drooper 86 to see how it looks for BS298 and it passes the eye test with my sample, hopefully the dropper 253 isn't too diferent but as its for a large future build (RAF C-130J) I may buy all the AB253's left just to be sure

Got the dropper version and its different being darker/greener, which on the one hand is bad as it means will be limited to just how much old 253 my local has and on the other excellent as its perfect for the darker areas on a C130 I'm going to do that are  covered by neoprane protective tape.

I'll check the dropper 253 soon, I think I have it in my "Paints to do" stash.

No rush on my account, as I said I've got it (bottom centre) and its clearly not suitable for standard Nato Green unlike the older formula (top center)

I did it more as a challenge. Here is how it went:

It is dead, Jim

Mixed with rather aggressive thinner

And tried to make a drawdown

It is broken, of course, but I hope I'll at least measure the color...

I suspect this paint had been frozen in transport and storage.

I was going to suggest that paint looks to have been frozen. I number of hobby acrylics get affected this way. Not acceptable in any case.

Casey, it seems from looking at your charts (wonderful work by the way), that Humbrol 253 (when it isn't frozen), appears to be a close match for; RAF Dark Green and NATO green. It is also the closest "out of the bottle" Humbrol colour for SCC15, the British late war olive drab for their army vehicles and tanks. Coincidence? Or have we stumbled across an all too human "we have plenty of this stuff, looks good enough, slap her on"?

Just out of curiosity, is H253 a good match for the RLM it is purported to be? (I wouldn't be surprised at this point, after seeing all the debacles with colour, that it isn't haha).

Edit from a user on here a few years back;

I just held my swatch of Mike's (Starmer) vallejo scc15 mix next to the raf museum vol 3 dark green paint swatch. It is the closest of all my non intended mixes. Just a bit too yellow. Some more 888 might do the trick. Work in progress

Mike Starmer is one of the most experienced colour matchers for British/Commonwealth vehicles from ww2. Interesting.

Depends who you ask. It might be not blue enough :)

But for the one from this source:

https://www.scalemates.com/books/luftwaffe-camouflage-and-markings-1933-1945-volume-2-classic-colours-luftwaffe-camouflage-and-markings-vol2-ka-merrick-juergen-kiroff--102688

Targets set: RLM - Merrick and Kiroff - Vol 2 Card 1

Target: 23. RLM 83 (dunkel-grün), RGB: #59574B (L*=36.75, a=-0.79, b=7.14)
Matches in: Humbrol (compared with 170 samples)
        DE00: 0.79 - #5A594C - AB0253 | No 253 | RLM 83 Dunkelgrun - Matt | GU 0.8 (L*=37.48, a=-1.12, b=7.49)
       100x100100x100

It is almost a perfect match.

The broken paint above is tiny bit worse and I have no clue if it is the color it was supposed to have - it is a great match still, though:

Target: 23. RLM 83 (dunkel-grün), RGB: #59574B (L*=36.75, a=-0.79, b=7.14)
Matches in: Humbrol-gen2 (compared with 1 samples)
        DE00: 1.61 - #575446 - DB0253 | No 253 | RLM 83 Dunkelgrun - Matt | Gen 2 (L*=35.40, a=-0.33, b=8.39)
       100x100100x100

This whole color range is usually a simple combination of carbon black and iron oxides.

Humbrol 253 you can get from modern pure pigments using:

4 part yellow oxide, 1 part burnt sienna and 1 part carbon black.

I've used Golden Fluid Acrylics pure pigments (by volume) in recipe above - yellow oxide and burnt sienna are both iron oxides.

Anyone having only cheap pigments is destined to stumble upon color from this olive brownish range.

RAF Dark Green needs different pigments. It is slightly off that range.

Oh. I thought I read in your chart that H253 was the closest Humbrol colour to RAF Dark Green?

Interesting I decided to run what Humbrol claim the new 253 is in an RGB comparion site and it gave BS298 Olive Drab as a match.........as you can see quite different to the H86 (right hand side in the earlier pic) I'd put down as fine for 298

It is. 1.56 is close but it is notieceably different if you put it one to another.

RGB comparion site

Please be aware of RGB color comparison issues. It will in lot of cases not work as intended. RGB is not defined standard and it is device dependant. I provide my conversions using sRGB and D65/10 observer but it is only for display purposes, all my matching is done in different colorspace (Lab).

Another problem is the quality of color data. Sometimes those sites get it by  'color picking from vendor sites' which is almost never right. You can check it easily, try 0 0 0 rgb and see what matches you get. If there is any close match, you can skip this site or app, there is no paint that is even remotely close to this color.
