Those are really interesting colors. I've measured them with spectrophotometer and tried to run a search. Here is what I got:

Blue Blazes Casey, that is a job of work & a half. This really is the sort of cross reference stuff that I & I'm sure many others have been hanging out for for ages. I can but hope for a wider range of paint makes to be included down the track maybe, at risk of sounding ungrateful, but trust me when I say, as one who has made up various paint swatches for eyeball comparison, I don't underestimate for a moment to work you have put into this, many many thanks.

As an aside, I mentioned recently my impression that Hu86 was a decent match for RAF Light Green, sorry, but I was heading down the wrong road on this. Some years ago I built a Burma based RAF P-47 & wishing to represent it as a machine with a faded finish after tropical service, I chose 86 & 110 as lighter but similar shades, to my eye, for weathered RAF Dark green & Dark Earth. Fwiw, I thought it worked quite well but it was never, now I think of it, 'sposed to represent the actual shades of Light green & Light earth.

Working on it. In plans: Whole range of Tamiya, most of Vallejo I got (around 100 of them) and any potential matches I can find on some other paints - I've already went through some in Lifecolor and Hataka.

Absolutely intrepid work Casay, really opened a can of worms here, defiterly decided I hate paoint now, just been going round in circles of USN Sea blues (Surprise xtracrylix is wrong for that as well, and Vallejo 898 looks spot on for postwar Gloss Sea Blue though to bad its matt...)

Not on my account, as I said I've found a match for post war sea blue I was interested in as thats the one I've got any plans to build in the short term, might order AK Interactives take on sea blues to see how they compare to period photos just in case I decided to do a wartime aircraft in the future

Well, I ran my database over ANA targets and results are really disappointing. There are no good matches (<3.0) for ANA607 and ANA 608 in any paints I have in the database so far. ANA606 is closest to 71.053 but 71.053 is dead flat while 606 is high satin. I think I need whole range of Vallejo paints - matching colors with them is like throwing things at the wall and seeing what sticks...

You got ANA623 in database? As said Vallejo 70.898 looks good to my eye for FS35042 which is what ANA623 was reformulated into, and indeed looks good as well from period photos of that

Vallejo 71.053, Tamiya XF-50 and Humbrol 104, in this order. No matter what Vallejo labels might have and even if they have dedicated ANA623.

Those matches are all matt and target is semi gloss - so you cant compare them visually without getting them to the same finish first. Integrating sphere spectrophotometer in SCI mode removes the gloss from color measurements for you.

RGB don't really show the differences well (and only confirms that color photos do not show real colors )

Thanks Casey, interesting Vallejo’s fs36099 is the closest match, I’ve got the model colour version so will try it out, skeptical it’s blue enough for 623 edit: yep no where near blue enough, not that it’s a big deal Vallejo 898 is probably close enough for me, also think I’ve got something that might be close enough for the bluer of ANA606/607 for me.

OK, there are TWO ANA 623's. the original 1944 version, which was found prone to fading, and the 1947 reformulation, which became incorporated into the FS 595 as FS 15042.

This confusion runs deep through the subject. Plenty of American modellers will tell you ANA606/607/623 = FS595 35042/25042/15042.

the 1944 version of ANA 623 is not very blue. It was described by @Jamie @ Sovereign Hobbies of Colourcoats as a "deep smoky blue"

or if you like, a purple blue dark grey.

Note the wartime sea blues are NOT very blue. They are dark blue greys.

I was lucky enough to obtain a copy of The Official Monogram US Navy & Marine Corps Aircraft Color Guide Vol 2 1940-1949 by John M Elliot Maj. USMC (Ret).

which has actual chips of ANA 606, 607 and 1944 version of ANA 623.

a common problem is that FS595 issue, that FS15042 is quoted for Gloss Sea Blue (which is correct for the post 1947 color) which is a dark grey with a deep blue green hue.

FS 25042 (satin) and FS 35042 (matt) are then quoted as being matches for ANA 606 and ANA 607 respectively.

while ANA 606,ANA 607 and ANA 623(1944) are similar colors, ANA 623(1947) is noticeably different to ANA 623 (1944)

I have good colour vision, and you need to take the chips out into sunlight to really 'see' them clearly. And they are hard to match.

That said, the FS 36099 chip is greyer to the eye (it just looks grey) compared to ANA 607 chip which is a blue grey.

This is the problem with spectrometer readings, and the DE reading.

I can see why the FS36099 is close to ANA607, but to the eye lacks the blueness that the Elliot chip has.

The problem is unless you have the chips, it's really hard to know what these colors really looked like..

I have ANA samples (multiple copies) and FS decks (also multiple copies from different years).

I can only confirm what @Troy Smith quoted here. Those blues are different colors, and they are more grey than blue.

RGB will not show them well, they are way too dark.

Luckily, a spectrophotometer can measure them and I can make matches that way.

I'll post matches for ANA chips in another thread, this is supposed to be the UK colors thread
