Where it will lead me, only my carpet monster knows Here are photos of my carpet monster with its future meals: I will be using those paints: Keeping it kitchen-like I started with the following recipe: 1.5g of Titanium White 1.5g of Carbon Black 1.5g of Yellow Ochre 4.5g of Super Matt Medium After mixing it well, adding "professional" label and test-spraying - I am now a happy owner of a new bottle of RLM66: I have couple of more bottles to go still. Second, about your handling of paints. This is alchemy as far as I am concerned. I suspect you only work on nights of full moon. Makes sense to me. The obligatory cockpit RLM66 spray went great, but lack of details on this model is really visible. Who stole my seatbelts? I've decided to "go for it" and paint a pilot. Because it will give *some* details to the cockpit after all. Manual asks for Humbrol 24 (Trainer Yellow), 61 (Flesh) and 106 (Ocean Grey). I whisked small amount of those paints, since I have recipes for them. If anyone cares, here is the *RAW* math matches calculations for Humbrol paints. Fluorescent paints wont work, metallic paints require different math and ingredients so it only gives the color shade not the metallic effect of course. My English must be rather poor, because I cannot believe you are talking about the same kit so many people have bitched about. When I built mine, I was using swear words I did not even know existed... Of course a more nefarious reason would be that all the kits that fail QC are shipped to Africa on an ox cart, and sold to unsuspecting Frenchmen who spend most of their life up trees, making funny noises . In the name of science I should buy another one and build it... but I think I will pass. You may have found perfection in the most unlikely kit. Enjoy it! This is my, I think, 20th of those little Airfix terrors I am building (with majority ending up in Mr. Trashcan), so I think my fingers know now how to put the cockpit together. If you ever find yourself making it again, don't glue the front part cockpit assembly, it needs to be bent down to make the halves fit. And because I built so many of them I know the quality is random - if you are lucky you get a good sprues (like I did), if you are not, it might even have built in flak damage :). I do have a full range of Revell paints, but for this build I've to use only the paints from Golden Fluid Acrylics. That means I had to calculate mixes that match Revell Aqua paints range. I thought I might share - here are the mixes for Revell Aqua range. There are no metallics (they need at least mica particles to get metallic effect - I might need to do a post of how to make metallic paints one day), fluorescent ones (they need special fluorescent piments) and transparent colors (they need non-opaque pigments), I've matched the colors to the Revell Aqua measurements I did for this post: You might find those recipes interesting, if you are into paint mixing or missing some mysterious color from Revell paint range. They are all mass based, not volume. Due to large number of them, I've hid the recipes themselves in a spoiler below. After mixing a color I usually add equal volume of a paint medium, so if I mix 5 gram of paint, I add 5 gram of medium. As I mentioned before - it is "Out of the box no extras" build, so don't expect even half of those crazy details people doing 1/72 scale having To give you an idea - here is the level of detail you can expect from this kit. Did I mention it is 1/32 scale? Yes. Most of the interior details are ejector marks I left them alone, more details the merrier! Also nobody will see them anyway. I tried to do something usable with the cockpit. There are decals and no fancy PE parts, so you get what you get. I don't know why but I feel left and right panel decals should be other way around, it would fit better. But I followed the manual. Now, here is the longer story version: Paints and colors are my main hobby - it might even be more enjoyable for me than making models themselves (heresy!). Additionally, I find the time I spend in MATLAB learning and modelling the real world as an extra rewarding experience. Plus I have some past in printing, coatings and color matching industry. Over time I've managed to build a large database of target colors from various sources - if possible original samples like British Standard, Federal Standard, RAL, Pantone - even 1960 Chevy paint dealer books - I shared my selected reference for this group build too, you can find it in the thread. I am also quite aware of common issues with quality of commercial paint matches for modellers - especially acrylics which I prefer due to health reasons. I publish my findings from time to time on Paint forum posts, like this one for example. Like all modellers I like to be able to do 'as close as possible' approach in the area of my interest. So while some modellers happily sculpt the "missing" piece from a slab of plastic if need be (or more modern, use 3D printer) - I make my own color matches. I know this approach is much harder to do with colors than shapes - without some references it is difficult to know how well you did and you really need some lab equipment to have objective measurements - I can see why some people get cold feet when they have to mix even 2 paints as per Revell instructions because "How would I know if I did it right?". Luckily, I had a couple of spectrophotometers sitting around so all I had to do was to get a software solution and build database of suitable pigments. Commercial solutions were limited and expensive, so I made my own - based on published research papers, known equations and physics theories. Finally I was able to calculate pigment properties from real world measurements, simulate them in virtual world, predict mixtures behavior and find out their optimal ratios that will give me a good target color match. Bingo. Almost. To make it all work I needed a good source of colors to mix, so I explored around - I've tried a small range of Liquitex, Golden Fluid Acrylics, Tamiya and Vallejo paints. Tamiya and Vallejo are mostly mixtures of (a very selected few) pigments. They are both more expensive than professional artist paints while having significant amount of additives/fillers combined with lower pigment load - which makes them more like basic (or sometimes called student) paint class product. But when it comes to my modelling I shoot for pleasing and or plausible colour rather than accurate colour which as you probably know is a massive can of worms. I have read good things about the golden acrylics, but on my budget I’m happy with Tamiya etc, in fact I’ve taken to using pound shop colours for blacks and grey mixes granted with various solvents and flow enhancers added to save money. I'm liking the extremely scientific analysis in that Hataka comparison post, I'll have a nose through some of the others when I have a chance. I've used recipes exactly as I posted them on the reference thread then adding 1:1 mass of Golden Super Matt medium. To measure paints mass, I used rather cheap jeweler scale. A. Merrick, Jürgen Kiroff "Luftwaffe Camouflage and Markings" publication, volume 2 explaining history and problems with those light colors, starting from pigment availability/stability, through pigment load used in paints down to underlying primers used. Casey Posted February 5, 2023 Author Share Posted February 5, 2023 (edited) I use parafilm as a masking material. I have heaps of it. Don't ask me why. Still, it works quite good. I do not have any special mask making technique, just freehanding stretched parafilm with scalpel, then applying it to the model. And of course I managed to chop off one of the guns, as usual. It was more a question "when" not "if" with this model and my clumsy little fingers. Here is how it looks after second color and removal of parafilm: And here it is with some mottling added. Cockpit went not bad, but I wish my OCD tail fix worked better. Next time I'll add so much filler I'll need to sculpt the tail from scratch. And I glued back the broken gun. Probably not the first time with this build. I'll definitely make final photos in my photo booth, since my work light has CRI index of sodium lamp.
