Short and Stumpy: Hasegawa 1/350 USS Gambier Bay

Recommended Posts

Hi All

Catching up on my builds from last year that made it into the yearbook, but haven't gone up on the site yet. This was the largest of the two ships I built last year, I decided to build it, mainly on a box-to-build size ratio, it's a whopper of a box for the size of the boat, so a net gain on space in the man-cave. I added on the Flyhawk etch set for a bit more detail, plus Hasegawa's own wooden deck for the kit. It's also the first time I've attempted to add any weathering onto a ship. Taking some lessons from doing so with the Armour I've been building, I went in with a less is more approach, just a light wash and some subtle streaking. I really like how much of an added dimension that even such a subtle weather gives the ship. Anyway, let me know what you think :)

Gidday, this is a superb model of a gallant vessel. These ships did a terrific job off Samar in October 1944. I'd like to do an escort carrier one day but it won't be a patch on yours here. Regards, Jeff.

Thanks Arnold and yes, that's a proper David Vs Goliath tale for modern times, courage, skill and ferocity in equal measure. I hope you get round to building one yourself, great fun and you don't feel the burden to fill it with planes like you might for a fleet carrier. In saying that, I'm planning to build USS Yorktown and Franklin to have the comparison of size (one day).

Thanks @johndon also, glad you all like 😃

Yeah, that's one of the reasons that having started with Airfix I've stayed with 1/600 scale, so each can be compared size-wise to the others. Back to the carriers, I know that there are 1/700 and 1/350 sets of aircraft available but I've not seen any in 1/600, so I guess I'm going to scratch build them too. I've already done a couple as trials.

Regards, Jeff.

Scratch building aircraft, you're a braver person than me 😉. Nice to know I'm not the only slave to my scale of choice. I love seeing them all next to each other with a realistic size comparison, Matt

Gidday, nothing brave about it - they're rather simple, done as trials. I've done a Wildcat (Martlet), Seafire, and Corsair for the carriers, and a Tigercat and Dinah because I like them. Regards, Jeff.

Lovely job on this escort carrier MRMRL and I’m particularly impressed with the dazzle paint scheme, something I’d like to attempt someday on a future ship build but am somewhat intimidated by the masking requirements.

I like the various tractors and forklifts that you placed in various locations the deck; were these included in the Flyhawk PE set? I noticed you painted these vehicles OD, was that color common for vehicles placed on carriers by the USN in WWII? (I always assumed they were grey).

I have a 1/350 Dragon Princeton CVL-23 that has been aging in my stash for close to ten years and your beautiful Gambier Bay is inspiring me to pull it out this year take a stab at it. Thanks for posting! John

I've selected builds because the boxes looked tatty and were 'spoiling the look' of my pretend model shop in the wardrobe, so I totally understand.

It's an interesting and fiercely pugnacious boat, presumably an escort carrier. I think your weathering helps with the look. I'm appaled by how short a runway was considered acceptable in those days.😱

One thing, to me it stands out that some of the streaking effects are not parallel with each other. I don't know if this is correct to references, but it looks rather strange.

Another super build and I think the weathering is right on.  The only thing that might have benefitted would have been a light wash to the deck.

Super looking model.

Rob

Thanks Rob, I agree but I'm not brave enough to apply a liquid to the wooden deck sheets, I fear them getting saturated easily.

Thanks John. The vehicles were included in the flyhawk set, yes and far more than I've used as well. No idea about the colour, I've seen 1 photo of a tractor in OD and gone with it. I have the dragon Independence in my stash, I'll build mine if you build Princeton 😉

Thanks Bertie. I find it mad that the Avenger (massive) could use the short deck but a Hellcat couldn't. A fair bit of the shonky streaking is my lack of skill (first go), even though I have tried to keep them all vertical. I do think the pictures exaggerate that a bit though, some of the wonks are the shape of the hull and my poor photography tricking the camera a bit, it doesn't look as bad in the flesh as in some of these pictures.

Great build.  Haha my avatar is this very ship. Great story of course related to this ship.

I agree, the story of the ship is a great one. I'm equally fascinated by the story of the class of ship, an example of US manufacturing dominance, 50 in ships in under 2 years, plus all the aircraft and equipment needed to make them useful.

BTW since you done such nice job with stumpy may I be so bold.....

You may, it is in the stash, that detail kit also, along with Hornet, Yorktown, Ranger and Franklin. Yet to add Sangamon and Langley, but I've already built Saratoga in a pre-war setup (but haven't photographed her yet). I won't promise when I'll get round to building them though, Hornet will probably be the next carrier, with Doolittle raid B-25s on deck.
