Su-27K from MiniBase

Recommended Posts

Hallo

In about one week, after finishing my present model, I will start with my first MiniBase Model.

The Su-27K. As I know already it is the most detailed kit today.

I think about a strategy to achieve a good model and to learn about the technology behind.

One idea is to start with all the weapons first.

As well launchers and so on.

To finish them ready for being attached on the aircraft.

Also the Moskit missile under the centerline.

To tell you, I am right now on a WW1 float plane in 1/48, the FF-33E.

Usually I am often too shy to start with an perfect super kit, until they are outdated.

So, this time I will jump over my own shadow!

More in a few days.

Has anyone built this model?

Memory still fresh and alive? Always open for any suggestion.

Happy modelling

P.S.: It is about the same feeling I had to build my first AFV Panther with interior from Takom!

Hallo

Here all my aftermarket products. All masks.

With New Ware masks I have already some pratice, used on all  my jets and props in the last years.

The Galaxy masks are to my opinion a good aid for making a quite far precise paint job without much overseen painting details.

Beside this I have the complete paint sortiment from Gunze in my shelf.

All special colors too.

So far for today, since I ride now my first horse still, the FF-33 E.

I hope to get started with this kit by the end of next week.

Happy modelling

Hallo

Now I get started.

Two options: Start with weapons or ejection seat.

The ejection seat is from the way how to build a new thing for me.

The high variation of colors.

Shoud I paint each detail in the spre, if they are too smal?

Never before did it like this.

So far, I will see how I will do it.

Hallo

The big day was it.

To start with this kit.

Additional 3D parts for pilot, harness, gear landing lights, refueling vent are wonderful executed.

I choose the etched harness. This part caused some grey hair, which does not bother me at all, since I have them already.

The instruction for this part is quite confusing and a contradiction. I knew it already. One way I got it. Not perfect, incorrect, but still it will look quite good after painting. For this build I will work on small groups, and finishing it before I make a bigger step further. It is too complex!

Hallo

Now my ejection seat. As I told you I kept my doing strict at the manual.

As I told you, the kit is quite complex and I assume I do not better know as the designer of the kit.

Such a beautiful and good work deserves a bow.

In every detail, no matter how small, I notice that everything that is necessary has been considered.

That brings joy. I've had enough experiences to the contrary, even with kits that look like they'll be good, but I've gone all the way to hell and retro on it more than once.

Just think of the Mig-31 from AMK and the nose wheel. I pray to god that this time I will be spared such an experience with this manufacturer.

So I worked today just on the seat.

Spraying, brush painting, dry-brushing and some panel lines.

Afterward the decals and assembly.

The gloss black I will cover with a smooth flat varnish of GX 114 tomorrow.

And I will start with the cockpit tube in plastic and etched parts.

Oh, I forgot:

Look at the decal sheet:

All stencils are well grouped and marked where they belong too.

The sheet is divided into different fields and there it is clearly and unambiguously evident to which assembly and in which direction stencils are.

Nobody can get lost anymore and maybe have to sift through 3 sheets to find the right stencil.

Looks very comprehensive...

You seem to be taking the complexity in your stride.. :)

I don't think I'd have the patience to do all the fiddly stuff, especially all those stencil decals...

So, I'll watch you deal with it all...

Following with great interest, this 1/48 looks more realistic than some 1/32 kits !!!

I am sure it will be a challenging project but also a soul searching journey for any modeller ! Keep the great work.

The cockpit

What was my goal:

To leave out the decals, since the surface is so fine detailed.

After the base coat I started painting each panel.

The decals where my color guide as well as photos from the original aircraft.

After each panel and detail I went over with a light dry-brush of grey.

The paint for dry-brush was highly diluted. And well dryed!

This results in leaving no streaks at all! Just paint on raised details.

So I went over the cockpit in multiple circles until the result looked good enough.

Decals I used just in the front dash board, on the lower area.

The raised details makes it impossible anyway.

Since I painted everything, so I could refrain from using the complete decal.

I was glad for my choice in painting each detail.

Well, so it looks now.

Hallo

Now the days were quite calm.

The nose landing gear bay was a straight forward issue.

The intakes, here more attention was necessary.

As you can see, one part of the intake is not in the instruction mentioned.

The lower surface of the intake above the intake grill for getting air from vertical downward in has a step, according to instruction.

The FOD grill above the intake grill is not mentioned.

The part is there right next to the other parts.

As I noticed that, I sprayed it and installed it.

Some parts are very tiny, so extra care has to be taken.

Before starting gear legs, I also had to put attention on the main gear arresting bracket sideward on the intake nacelle.

This issue is the most complicated all over the Sukhoi aircraft. Like the Mig-23 main gear.

The instruction is useless more or less.

The part J92 for instance does not look like that.

The nose, where the arrow points, is not there!

The angle of the leaver corresponding to the rotating cam for the arresting bracket is not shown anywhere.

Part J23 looks different. Without the cuboid on top of it and is too short now.

The assembled unit, looks the same for the right and left side on the instruction.

But it is mirror like!

And to tell you:

I've scoured every search engine on the web for build reports on this particular build and Su-33 from MiniBase.

There are the really great modelers who also build for money in front of the camera.

No one has dealt with this particular assembly. It was there all of a sudden, mostly that was missing.

This superficiality in the internet building reports is absolutely helpful.

Welcome to hell!

Well I hope that my build report will be of some help to you if you really want to build this thing.

I hate misleading people, or staying silent despite knowing.

It's a bit like the rascal prank:

Removing the danger sign off a quicksand beach, or removing the fence off a minefield.

Hallo

The wheelbay and the air ducts with inlet are now positioned on the underside half of the model.

The nose wheel bay is also installed.

More tomorrow.

Hallo

Well, assembling the components is not that easy.

Because we have a very high level of detail.

A lot of parts and we always have to ask whether the installation of a part will not hinder us in the further course.

Or whether we can then continue to build sensibly.

This is how I will use the canards later, after assembling the fuselage.

The elevator is also used independently later.

Preparations are still being made. The outer wings will also be used later.

The gear as well later.

I won't put on the rudders until later.

I would also like to finish spraying them first and only correct them in the gluing area.

Working on the base of the gear was fairly easy, but you have to be really careful.

The production of the flaps of the wing is complex.

Many components and a somewhat confusing instruction contribute to the fact that a lot of energy is expended.

Stops have to be made again and again and the components around the fuselage checked so that nothing is forgotten.

That's how it is today.

Work is now waiting on the chassis, the pylons, launchers and weapons as well as the engine.

Hello

Now it went on. The gears was the first topic. Lots of parts to look for and assemble. That wasn't always easy, because there was one part I was at a loss for. The number was missing in the instructions. With the assembly instructions from the Internet I could recognize it. There must have been some printer demon at work.

Yes, and then the nozzles. Here I worked with the GX colors. Today they turned out to be too dark for me. But now I know how to do it. Base was C 8 silver. After that came something black, yellow, purple, orange. However, the individual colored areas have two different aspects. Ground color and local tempering colors. The former go over the entire surface, the latter correspond to small spots, as we know them from the camouflage of German night fighters. Today they turned out to be too dark for me. Next time it will be better.

Tomorrow we will continue with the covers for the chassis. In addition, all installations and all linkages for the entire chassis. Then comes the cockpit.

Hallo

Well, today I fitted the undercarriage covers with the individual parts.

I immediately mounted those parts that also got the interior red color.

That was pretty easy.

After that, all actuator cylinder to open & close the hatches and these for rotation of the gears and other small parts affecting the rear of the cockpit in the area around the ejection seat were also done.

The components are now all sprayed and painted with a brush.

The hull could be glued together.

Of course, only after a careful check to see if something hasn't been forgotten.

I will only mount the tail units and canards after the big spraying process.

These surfaces would have significantly hindered the gluing.

And as a result, the risk of injury to all control surfaces parts was simply too great.

Thus, these parts are will be treated separately.

Before I can get started, I'll finish the folding mechanism.

Likewise the setup of the front cockpit with the front glass.

Then I can mask the model and put on the wing in the spread condition.

Yes, and then it's sprayed.

First the camo, then all other surfaces and the hot area of the engine.

Masks are all available from Galaxy models and NewWare.

See you later then.

Hallo

I started the painting now.

Since the camo is quite difficult to apply, I choose the following process:

The colors are prepared as the color instruction says. The result is quite reasonable.

So I started with the color C. The bright camo color for the underside and some distinctive areas on the top.

I designed my own masks and will apply them step by step.

Each color is fully applied with base color first, in my first step the original C color.

Afterward shaded ( 5:1 with C : black and diluted 2:1) and brightened ( 5:1 with C : white and diluted 2:1).

Afterward all are polished with 3600 grid.

Then the color is masked for color B.

So on and on....

Hallo

Now after finishing the camo, I had to tread the other non camo surfaces.

Here are man grey panels as well as the large hot area and the leading edges of the wing and forebody strakes, with metal surfaces.

I use Galaxy masks, as written in the introduction.

1st and 2nd post on this type.

This masks are color seperation masks.

This company also produces decals and masks for MiniBase kits.

The masks are well designed and easy to use. Well cut and easy to find and work with.

So far for today.

Hallo

Now, today I completed the front cockpit.

The front glass was also attatched.

After getting the smal gaps filled with CA and grinded, I put on a the whole aircraft and all not applied parts as rudder and so on, a base varnish of clear gloss coat.

With GX 112 from Gunze.

Afterward I started with the panel lines. Far from finished now.

This will be quite a few days untill I got my panel lines done.

Afterward I will place all stencils.

When the aircraft is finished I will start with the weapons.

Hallo

Decaling & stencling is done.

Gloss varnish & fine flat varnish is done.

Gear is assembled, not so the doors.

All other steps for assembling are left over, to be done later on, according with the installation of the weapons.

Also the doors, where I am looking forward and do not whant a collission with the weapon load later on!

So have a look.

The assembling of the gear has some hazzards. I saw them comming.

The accutator of the rear at the main landing gear leg is such a thing. To find the rear hole!

The front gear: The stubs of the axle is quite long, so you get in collisision with the mud guard.

So far, next time more.

Hallo

Some days past. In meantime the weapons and the launchers and pylons are finished. And all parts painted. Weapons, expect the Moskit missile I still have to stencil.

Corona stopped me for five days. Not bad, no fever but tired.

Today I stenciled the Moskit.

To install this weapon is evil. The tollerances on the fuselage to the centerline pylon makes the installation to a nightmer. Really. The installation of the missile requires two steel pins, since there is just one shallow plastic pin. You need your brain and you must avoid the instruction.

Painting the missiles was a joy with all the masks I had!

Tomorrow stenceling. This week I want to assemble the model and finish it.

Pictures during the next days.

Hallo

Some steps forward.

The missiles are done. The 73s and 27s. As well as the Moskit.

Launchers and pylons I started today. You can see some examples. Just one side done.

The quality of stencils is excellent.

Some days more until I can finish my model.
