Hobby Room Renovation......anyone wanna follow along?

Not sure if this would be of interest...........a WIP of my hobby room renovation?  Barely touched a model since early 2021.  Last post of a model to my Flickr page was Dec 7, 2020.   That is because in the Spring of 2021 I started the final big remodel of the whole house (2x bathrooms already done prior to major reno).   Phase 2 is finally in full swing and the Hobby Room is part of that reno.

Maybe someone would find it interesting.   I always like to see other people's workbench.  Anywho, if people are interested let me know.  I can post stuff as I go........since I don't have the time to work on models right now.   If so, in the Chat or different section of the forum?

Yes - I've just moved mine into a new, smaller, room and its not quite finalised so would be interested in seeing things I haven't thought of.

Never occurred to me to make it a WIP ... mind you, it would have meant lots of pictures of queuing in Ikea :)

Cheers

Yes please, I'm also setting up a completely new work station at home, so I'd be most interested to see how you're doing yours.

I've got my ongoing work at it in my Multiple build thread for 2023

I've only just started but all will be presented in my thread as I go along with it.

Let's begin.....

Bought my childhood home from my dad in 2007 after my divorce.  Dad built this house in the summer of 1973 on his summer break from teaching.   Back then things didn't have to be finished to move in.   Sink and stove were still on saw horses when they moved in.   Next to my old bedroom was a "kitchen" area that never was finished.  Was meant to be a granny flat with a bath, bedroom and small kitchen.   That became my model room while growing up and the same after I bought the house.  Room finished size will be roughly be 122" (309cm) long by 79" (200cm) wide.  I didn't take any old pics but it was just unfinished drywall with a dark wood grain formica counter top on one side and some cheap shelving.  Old spray booth was one built outta 3/8" (or maybe 1/2") plywood with a big 330 cfm pc style axial fan vented outside.

Phase 1 - Main floor remodel (minus one bedroom to live in)

Phase 2 - Last bedroom, basement remodel/finish, large sun porch (more like a room) refinish.

The plan........I figured I'd be building cabinets for the room (hobbyist woodworker with a large woodshop).   But during the kitchen renovation in phase 1 of the large house remodel, the cabinet maker screwed up so bad they replaced 9 of the 15 cabinets, a couple of them they replaced twice.  Lot of this was dings or cracks or just poor finish.  They never wanted them back nor picked them up so they are being used to build out the model room.   Some modifications will be have to made to reconfigure drawers/doors.   Other than figuring out the cabinet layout based on what I already have this is kinda a shoot from the hip build.   Figure it out as we go.   Wall will be 3/4 sanded plywood to make hanging stuff easier, rather than messing with drywall.

The blank canvas with electrical work done.  The flex duct hanging down is for the spray booth and vents outside.  Looking in from the spare bedroom at the whole room.

Right side  (work bench area)

The plan.....the right two cabinets may get switched around, I am not sure yet.   Layout isn't 100% right as I was using a online tool and just got it close based on the prefabbed units they had.   On the left above the shallow short cabinets I am thinking I will build a lighted display case to match the cabinets.   Cabinets are cherry with a dark stain on them (sample pic farther down)

This picture is only to show you what the color of the cabinets will look like. (kitchen not fully finished at the time of photo)

Spray foam guys are here as we speak.  In both phases, walls were stripped down to studs, rewired and spray foamed.

Next step will be a little bulk head to hide the duct work followed by plywood installation.

I was referencing your conversion from inches to mm, you're out by a factor of 10 (or it should have been cm not mm)

Oh yeah............typo.   🤣  What a gomer I am.  Corrected.

Just a small update, nothing major.   Spray foam guys finally showed up.   Since they were doing a bunch of other stuff in other areas of the house I had them spray the exterior wall ( including the joist bays) instead on doing foam board.

Bulkhead built to hide the duct work and pipes.

Next step will be to install some 1/2 ply to the walls.

Nice. I have a pokey loft that SWMBO says I can kit out for myself. Only thing is what with one thing and another we keep shoving bits up

there for storage so I never seem to get the chance to start fitting out............One day perhaps.

Looking good already.

I enjoy builds like this as much as kit builds !

Wish I had more space for a true dedicated man cave/modelling room ... I'll keep doing the lottery and keep my fingers crossed :)

My mancave is on the back of the garage. Ten feet by seven, so just big enough for me, desk, chair and display and storage shelves.

I only put one inch insulation into the walls and floor, so it's a bit chilly during the winter.  I really should put more insulation into the ceiling.

Good luck with your build @BlueNosers352nd

Following with interest. Always found it interesting to see where other modellers work their magic.

I moved house in February 2021. My new workshop was the first room in the new house to be fitted out. After all, if I didn't have my workshop and tools set up, I couldn't do any of the other jobs in the house and garden! It is basically a 20ft square room, with part of one corner taken up by another room, making it an 'L' shape. It was also made using kitchen cabinets and benches, all stripped out and moved from my old workshop, built in early 2000. They were the £10 each MFI base units and have served me well. Here it is.

There was a small coat cupboard just inside the doorway which became a small display space and photo studio.

  • 3 weeks later...

Small update, this was actually done a week and a half ago, just keep forgetting to post it.  1/2" ply installed and ready for finish work.  Next step (currently working on) is filling screw holes and seams getting it ready for paint.  Plan is to have it painted by the end of the weekend and hopefully sooner.
