ModelingEdmontonian Posted January 5, 2023 Posted January 5, 2023 (edited) What, another ModelingEdmontonian project? Well, what can I say? As I "travel the world" from my modelling table I have three projects underway already: "Hawker Hurricanes around the World," "Last Legs Ponies," and "Minor Gustavs." Now, I want to introduce "Sexy American Singles in South American Service," which is a spin off of Last Legs Ponies. For Last Legs Ponies I am modeling American WWII fighters that ended their service lives in air forces around the Caribbean. This concept is similar, but I am picking one American WWII single-engine (not necessarily a fighter) to represent each South American nation, with the exception of Colombia and Venezuela, since they are being represented in Last Legs Ponies, and Guyana and Suriname, which I don't believe have operated any relevant aircraft. Oh, the other qualification I have is that they have to be sexy American singles ("sexy" helped with the alliteration I was going for), but that's a subjective criteria 😉 . Here is a map of the eight countries and a/c I plan to model: I have Brazil (Academy P-47D) underway already, but really why I am introducing this project now is that I intend to join the Salty Sea Dog GB with Argentina's F4U-5, so more action will occur in my thread over there for now than in this one. More to come! Edited March 2 by ModelingEdmontonian 7 1
2996 Victor Posted January 5, 2023 Posted January 5, 2023 This looks like being another fab project, ME, there's a great variety of types there to keep the interest up. Whose P-35 will you be using? Looking forward to seeing this progress! All the best, Mark 2

It does not include markings for Ecuador, but I think I can piece them together. Have you built a P-35 or are you familiar with the Special Hobby kit? 2

Unfortunately, I'm not familiar with the kit, but I have a liking for Seversky and Republic aircraft, and I'd like to do a P-35 at some point. I expect there'll be a build thread somewhere! All the best, Mark 2
ModelingEdmontonian Posted January 5, 2023 Author Posted January 5, 2023 Here is the WIP thread I'm starting over in the Salty Sea Dog GB for Argentina (Italeri F4U-5): 2
ModelingEdmontonian Posted April 6, 2023 Author Posted April 6, 2023 The Argentine Corsair is well underway, but held up a bit, so I've gone ahead and started Uruguay, a F6F-5 Hellcat! I'm building it as part of the Salty Sea Dog GB: 2

I'm building it as part of the Salty Sea Dog GB: This is the kit I'm using for Uruguay; it's the nightfighter version of the Eduard kit, but the Uruguayan Hellcat I'm building is not a nightfigher (i.e., just a "5," not a "-5N"). 3
marvinneko Posted April 7, 2023 Posted April 7, 2023 Another interesting series! When I was reading about Venturas it occurred to me that following one airframe through multiple guises would be interesting too (Venturas were bought up cheap and used for drug running). Amazing to watch you pump these things out with all the unique liveries. 3
ModelingEdmontonian Posted April 26, 2023 Author Posted April 26, 2023 Uruguay F6F-5 is all done over in the Salty Sea Dog GB! The Eduard kit was a dream. I'll post some more pictures at some point. 8
2996 Victor Posted April 26, 2023 Posted April 26, 2023 She's a beaut, ME - I need to catch up with the build thread! Cheers, Mark 1
ModelingEdmontonian Posted May 12, 2023 Author Posted May 12, 2023 I just finished up the Argentinian F4U-5N Corsair in the Salty Sea Dog GB. Here she is! I'll get some more photos up in a bit, including of the Uruguayan F6F. For now more photos are in the GB gallery and the WIP. 6
ModelingEdmontonian Posted June 5, 2023 Author Posted June 5, 2023 Moving further north up the Atlantic coast from Argentina and Uruguay we arrive in Brazil. I began modeling a Brazilian P-47 (Academy kit) in my Last Legs Ponies project, but she's moved over to join the Sexy American Singles. Logically, I figured she should be my next addition to this project. Here is the state she was in when I pulled her out last night. Fuselage is buttoned up, but that's about as far as she's gotten. I'm modeling "C1" . . . . . . using FCM decals. For no particularly good reason I decided to assemble the rocket launchers next. The wings need to be drilled out to accommodate these, and that was done without issue. I also assembled and installed the engine onto the fuselage. 9
ModelingEdmontonian Posted June 6, 2023 Author Posted June 6, 2023 I put Brazil's wings together last night. The Academy kit is fitting fairly well so far, but the wings-to-fuselage fit looks like it will result in some gaps and leaves some uncertainty regarding how to position them for proper dihedral. I'll see what I can do.... 4
VT Red Sox Fan Posted June 6, 2023 Posted June 6, 2023 Amazing work on the GSB F6F/F4U. FWIW, I believe the engine in Academy’s P-47D needs some magnetos added—again, well done! best, Erwin 1
ModelingEdmontonian Posted July 12, 2023 Author Posted July 12, 2023 I have the P-47 wings and stabilizers and cowling on now, and she's getting close to primer-ready. Realize now I closed up the cowling without looking into the magnetos... will do a little research. Cheers. 5

By the way, I'm using Tamiya bombs and rocket launchers for this, as they were crisper than the Academy pieces. 4
ModelingEdmontonian Posted July 17, 2023 Author Posted July 17, 2023 Here's the Brazil (Academy P-47D) a/c ready to be primed . . . . . . and, once primed, some YZC into the wheel wells and doors. 7
ModelingEdmontonian Posted July 20, 2023 Author Posted July 20, 2023 Some wet neutral grey now on the P-47 underside. 5
ModelingEdmontonian Posted July 22, 2023 Author Posted July 22, 2023 Brazil's underside painting is pretty much done, including UC doors. I also have a variety of greens going onto the main gear legs, bombs, and rocket launchers. 5
AdrianMF Posted July 22, 2023 Posted July 22, 2023 Sexy singles indeed! I think the Academy bubbletop shares a load of parts with the Razorback, in particular the undercarriage. They show the undercarriage doors overlapping, but they still fit the wheel well. Both the doors and legs need trimming down about 3mm if you want to get a more accurate sit. Here's a razorback I did a while back, with a pic of the problem and a pic of the fix. Regards, Adrian 4

I'll see what I can do. Meanwhile, ensuring I have the right greens associated with the right green paints . . . . . . and olive drab (another shade of green) splashed around on top. 6

This, on the other hand, I did want to tackle--especially because I'll be loading this beast down with drop tank, bombs, and rocket launchers--I think she needs to sit much lower than Academy designed her to. I think I'm on the right track... Here's the difference. Edited August 6, 2023 by ModelingEdmontonian 7
ModelingEdmontonian Posted August 14, 2023 Author Posted August 14, 2023 (edited) Upper camo is not yet done, but I have the decals onto Brazil's underside. These are actually 5 decals layered (two o the starboard wing, three on the port) to get to what we have here, but it works out really nicely. These are FCM decals. You also get a decal on the sheet to do something fun on a bomb, so I picked one to apply this decal to. Edited August 14, 2023 by ModelingEdmontonian 9
opus999 Posted September 4, 2023 Posted September 4, 2023 Somehow this one got past me until now! It's all looking very good -- I love the F6F and F4U. I'm glad to hear the Eduard F6F was a dream because I've got one scheduled to arrive tomorrow! I have Special Hobby's P-40K with Brazilian markings that I'm keen to get started soon, too. 1 1
